So I finally got the Samsung 8500, after reading about it for about a year. I haven't gotten it calibrated yet, but I noticed that when I turn on LED Motion Plus (LMP) in the Advanced Settings menu, the left side of the screen is dark but the right side is brighter, almost as if it were in Demo mode. I've only found one post that talks about this but couldn't find a solution in the thread. Is there a way to fix this?

Can someone tell me if there is a burn in period that you need on the Samsung LED 8500 before you should calibrate? I don't have the TV yet but I had someone tell me that you might need to wait 9 months for burn in before you should try to have your TV professionally ISF calibrated.

I know my roommate had to burn in his Kuro for like 100 hours or something like that before he calibrated it. Not sure if its the same with LCD tv's though, but I would assume it should be burned-in.

9 months in any case seems a bit exaggerated, but I'm sure that infers regular viewing. We left the Kruo running a burn-in loop, flashing screens of R/G/B and gray.

Unlike plasma there is no need for a break-in period with LCD. You can have an LCD calibrated as soon as you like.

Is there a preferred colorimeter/calibration kit to use for LCD/LED tvs? I don't know if I'm going to exchange my 8500 yet or not (problem a couple posts up) but I do want to try to calibrate it.

It's interesting that the Fry's salesman I talked to questioned to need of any professional ISF calibration and said the Monster kit that they sale as a calibration disk that would suffice. Of course since Best Buy has Geek Squad guys that do ISF calibration they are do recommend it. They guy at Best Buy I talked to today says they recommend 100 hours of viewing on this TV before scheduling the calibration.

Just out of curiousity, what type of HDMI cables are you all using on these TVs? I use mostly AudioQuest cables for my interconnects and speakers. I probably will get one of theirs but not sure if I need something that passes 240Hz like the Monster 1000 HDMI. That is likely overkill since know source I am aware of will pass that signal.

Is anybody noticing the "dirty screen effect" when the camera pans really fast? I just started noticing this, this week, on my UN55B8500.

I have had the tv for a month and never noticed this before. My back light is at 3 and Contrast is 63 so I know the panel isn't being overdriven. I have reset the TV back to default and even tried cleaning my screen with the cloth (only) provided thinking that it may jut be dust.

Any thoughts?

My LN55A950 did this same thing 2 months after I had it. I currently run the 1008 firmware but will try to update in hopes of it correcting the problem.

there is NO burn in needed for LED TV's. Period. The LEDs won't shift color to any degree noticeable for years.

Any 1.3 cert hdmi will do there is no need for ANY special hdmi unless you feel like pissing away money for an impressive sounding cable. Its a cable and its very unlikely that you would be able to discern any difference in color or sound between pretty much any 1.3 certified hdmi, from the 2$ mono price to the 100$+ "audiofile" brands or idiotfile Monster brand.

I have all monoprice hdmi cables since all runs are less than 6' there is no reason at all to spend anything more than 6$ or less for your cables.

Hi Guys, just got my UN55B8500, haven't actually turned it on yet, so fingers crossed.

But reading in the manual. It says to use HDMI1 (DVI) if you are plugging in sources less than 1.3. So if i'm connecting to my Denon 3808 which is 1.3a. should i be using HDMI2-4 and not HDMI1? Whats everyone else using?

Just goes to show you each is trying to make a sell.. I personally think you don't really need either. picture is great without buying for calibration and I know you don't need those expensive Monster cable.
I too use monoprice, which can be gotten online for good deals..

Yes, I have seen the same thing. I think it's ussally source releated. The worst the source, the worst the effect. Some shows look clean, others are noicy, from what I see..

Fixed! Bad power supply.

It's a lot cleaner than I thought in terms of design, and there was no obviously failed capacitor.

Thanks for the input.

After doing some research, it seems this is just the way LCD's are. I mostly notice it on light colors - white, gray, etc. Seems to be linked to HDTV by satellite (Dish Network) as Blu-Rays do not show it.

I can live with this unlike the banding I was getting on my LN55A950.

Where's the power supply in the pic? How long have you had the tv before it broke?
The power supply is the tan board on the left.

I had the TV 4 months before it failed.

*Posting for a friend who purchased this TV today due to my recommendation after loving last year's A950 local dimming model.*

New B8500 owner needs advice.

Just got home with the set but won't have time to open and hook up until tomorrow. Trying to make a checklist of things to do.

-- Firmware version. Where do I check it?

-- Hours of use. Is there a way to check this? I always feel better knowing I didn't get a returned/used set.

-- Are there any known defects or issues that I should be watching for?

-- Anything else I should do?

Thanks guys.

just upgraded from an 11-year old 27" sony crt to a UN46B8500.

does anyone have the remote code for a series 1 tivo remote (or thomson tivo remote) to control power, volume, and mute of the B8500 ? none of the codes listed in the tivo interface for samsung tvs or receivers do anything.

I received my 8500 fri and I am running a PS3 for my blu-rays with it. I have an HDMI into the tv and an optical from my PS3 to my receiver. I am getting some lip syncing issues on and off with my bluray movie. I have not updated the system out of the box with any firmware - would doing so fix it? If not, does everyone recommend updating with the firmware?- Also would any of the video processing capabilities of the 8500 cause some of the dialogue to be out of synch with the optical line?

Updating the firmware, unfortunately, will not combat the lip syncing issues because the TV has no control of the audio going through the optical from your PS3. All of the processing the TV has to do to give it that beautiful picture delays the picture by X milliseconds, but the sound hits your receiver right away.

I wish Samsung had the forethought to use the optical out they provide on the TV to pass a "tweaked until synced" audio track from all inputs. That would be awesome!

I would still update the firmware to 1009. It may keep you from the dreaded crop-circle issue most have experienced. I haven't heard of any issues with the 1009 firmware besides connectivity to get it.
Does your receiver have any syncing capabilities? You may be able to add a slight audio delay at the receiver and match up the audio with the picture on the TV.

Just to clarify, the optical out on the TV does not work as a pass-through for inputs, right? I too have slight sync issues with my cable STB, with video out to the TV as HDMI and audio out to the receiver as optical. It's an older Yamaha receiver and it doesn't have the ability to add delay unfortunately. Luckily my Pioneer Elite BD player has sync settings so I at least can get blu-rays matched up fine.

To update your firmware, you must connect the TV to your home network via an ethernet cable or you can use the Samsung USB wireless device. Within the menus there is an option for Maintenance where you can check for updates. The process is very simple and pretty quick.

From what has been written here, the 1009 update is designed to fix the crop circles problem...

Hey,

I'm looking into getting a 8500, but from what I've been reading in this thread, there are a lot of issues with audio syncing correctly?

I do not have a home theater system and would much rather use the speakers from the tv, but would I have to get a receiver/speaker system to put audio delay?

I will be hooking up a ps3 to the 8500 to play games and watch dvd's/blu ray's on.

Thanks.

I don't think you would see much lip sync issue using the internal speakers ( at least I didn't see an issue when I first hooked mine up, before i turned off the internal speakers). However I would highly recommend not using the internal speakers as they will give you dismal sound quality, at least in comparison to the beautiful picture quality. The tv is very thin and its not exactly sporting Bang & Olufen speakers. If you don't want a full speaker set up, you may want to look into a sound bar, samsung makes a matching one.
Definietely in the future I will be looking upgrade my sound system but for now, internal will do.

Just want to make sure after spending ~2k on this tv it will be watchable, you know?

So do most people run into problems when they aren't using the internal speakers then? I'm a little confused.

At least in my experience, I had to set my Denon 3808 AVR to about 80ms delay. I don't know how common that is though. All of my sources go through the Denon AVR then to the TV. So it appears the AVR processes the audio faster than the TV processes the video signal. Not really a problem if you have AVR that has the adjustment, but not all do.

If the TV is doing both, I would assume it wouldn't be an issue, but I only tried it for a few minutes when I initially was testing out the tv. Hopefully someone who uses the onboard speakers can chime in.

Bought my 46B8500 last night and I am blown away at how much better it is then the one I returned which was the 55B8000

The clouding was so bad on the 8000 that I wanted to cry....

I settled for the smaller set but got back a much better quality

Quick questions

In the top center of the screen when the tv is off i can see a smudge and when i use the fiber cloth that came with the tv. it feels like there is a huge smudge there that i cannot get smooth like the rest of the screen.

What can i use to clean it to make it all smooth

also...I am using the cnet movie settings for now

I would like to use that mode just for movie watching but want a better suggestion for sports and for regular tv watching.

thoughts

what about gaming calibration...that would be great if I can get some input and suggestions
post #1259 of 3710
I am going to pick up the 55" 8500 on Friday. I checked out the box measurements in this thread and confirmed it will fit in the back of my SUV leaning a bit on the side. My question involves setup. Is it easy enough to mount the display on the stand by yourself or is it a two person job? I assume is a matter of clicking in in place and tightening some screws.

While I am still considering getting it professionally ISF calibrated after a month or two, is it worth investing in a calibration disc or should I just try the setting posted in the calibration thread?

Thanks.
The 8500 comes already mounted to the stand. I will recommend having a helping hand to remove the 8500 from the box and placing it wherever it may go. It's not that heavy but just awkward.

I can't comment on the calibration question as I just plugged it in and enjoyed it.

Congrats on the new set.
