The Kuro has it's own set of issues like brightness and yellow tinge. The interesting part is that it's easier for me to adjust 8500/950 settings to make it look like a Kuro than it is to make a Kuro look like the 8500/950.

I think it's a great set. But I don't think it beats the 8500. So far. Nothing has.

I was lucky enough to pick up a leftover new in the box 55 from the distribution company I work for, for $1400. I think I got a pretty good deal. loving the set so far, just deciding if I should pay for a certified calibration or not. I am currently running the settings from tweaktv and they look great.
Welcome to the club. I never got mine calibrated, but others have.
Suggestion; Put it on "natural," tweak the settings a little to reduce the soap opera effect, go get some Blu-Rays and don't screw with it for 2 or 3 weeks. Then come back and we'll talk.

I can get a NIB UN55B8500 for $1800 total. In 2011 what are the chances of Samsung making something around $2000 that will be better than the 8500?

Zero

Agree. The only thing that will touch an 8500 is another local dimming LCD. Since that would represent the flagship of the Samsung line they are going to want a premium. A $2000 price would crush their low end and mid range LCD sales. Not going to happen.

I'd jump on that for $1800. There isn't a single set out there that is going to give you that PQ for that cheap. Heck, if you don't want it just send me a link and I'll get it.

I just did pay for the 55B8500 at 1799.00 total. I decided that a 50" is to small and a 60" is just about right.... so I will compromise and be happy wtih the 55. I just have to make sure its really NIB. It's listed as a New refurb.

I love the Ultra Clear Panel.... so I am sure I would like this better than the XBR8.

New refurb? Well, I'd be sure to get a warranty with it then just to be safe. I promise you. You are going to LOVE your set. Just to even come close the this PQ. You'd have to spend a min of 2K more. You'll see.

I hear you about the refurb.

they have a refurb section and some are NIB even though they are marked as a refurb. Yes it comes with a full warranty. I have to make a phone call to confirm the.

I love my 8500. I got the Wireless adapter to hook up with my home wireless network. I am able to stream movies with only minor buffer issues. My real issue is not being able to control the streaming movie; I can pause, but there is no fast forward or rewind. If I stop a movie halfway through, I will need to start from the beginning.

Does anyone know of a way to fast forward or, better yet, select a specific time while using the Wiselink DLNA connection? Some AVI movies have a 10 second skip forward or backward, but I am really looking for a way to jump to a specific time in the movie.
I gave up on DLNA. Pointless feature IMO.

thanks for the input. I'm currently using the settings from tweaktv

You will be amazed how great this set looks once calibrated. I didn't think it would make a difference but I had gotten mine done for free. So I figured why not. Haven't looked back since.

It presented as a series of lighter circles at regular intervals throughout the screen.

Circles? Not sure if anyone ever responded to you, but this sounds like the old "crop circle" issue; I saw this on my set but I just turned it off and it was gone. If you see it again, turn the set off immediately and see if it goes away. If not, there is a firmware fix for this as I recall.
What is the recommended firmware version for the 8500? I've seen several posts that indicate the latest is not the greatest.

Thanks.
version 1008.
1008 is fine until you get crop circles.

There was absolutely no difference between 1009-1010 that I saw.

And for those asking about the quality of this set (I had a 46 and moved to the 55), let me put it this way---I'm terrified that something will go wrong. Not the fact that it could cost an arm and leg to fix, but that I wouldn't be able to fix it, and lose the best looking TV I've ever seen.

Feel the same way as oland .

Does anyone have a copy of firmware 1009?

Thanks for the reply. It is not crop circles, but a clouding/flashlighting problem. It only shows up in dark scenes. Interestingly, it get worse the longer the TV is on. When I went back to the same scenes after the TV was just turned on, the problem was gone. It then "reappeared" after the TV was on for several hours. I am not sure if this has been a problem all along and I have just become sensitive to it or it is something new

+2. Couldn't agree more.

They have it over on the junkies site; they've a whole thread devoted to the "crop circles" problem and the firmware link is on the first post of that thread, IIRC.
I'm not familiar with the "junkies" site. Can you be more specific?
