I don't know where you saw this new Samsung backlit local dimming model. All of the LED-LCD models at CES are edge-lit, including the top of the line UND8000.

LG set will be pretty nice but check out Vizio! Wow. I think they are becoming a force to be reckoned with. I'm honestly considering them. They seem to be out doing everyone. I'll post the video I wax watching with the Sammy. As for as the LG and plasma vids.

Whoa, wait--what?? 480 zones?? Really? That's like ... amazing. Can you please give a link to where you learned that? If that thing really goes to market with 480 zones, it'll be a total monster. I mean, I knew the processed refresh rate (using all interpolation, etc.) was 480hz, but I had no idea it also had 480 discrete LD zones. Links, man--gimme links! I wanna read up on this.

Holy **** that's incredible. I figured it would be 250 zones max. Where's your source?

Yeah, I've failed to find any hard data on the number of zones myself. Hopefully someone in the know will chime in.

According to flatpanelshd.com:

"1. A backlight with 2300 LEDs, compared to 300 for edge LED based TV or up to 1200 for LGs' Full LED technology.

2. Micro Pixel Control technology (LED local dimming) that controls light in up to 280 zones compared to 240 zones on previous models. This ensures very high contrast and very deep black levels."

(Sorry guys, first post so I can't post links yet but you can find the article in the news section by the name LG LW9500 and LW7700 with Nano technology 05 jan 2011)

Yeah...still think the 8500 remains top dog. As Codename_Falcon said, even the top of the line UND8000 still uses edge-lit technology, no matter what moniker they give it. I personally don't give a damn about 3D either, so I remain incredibly pleased with my TV.

And not to whine, but when did this become the "what's better than the UNB8500!?!" thread?

Forgive me if this issue has been covered previously. Any input would be appreciated.

Last summer, I wall mounted my UN46B8500 and instantly noticed a dark spot near the middle of the screen about the size of a quarter. It's only noticeable once you know it's there - like you have to look for it. But it's kind of annoying and sometimes distracting. For a $2500 set, it should look perfect.

Lightly brushing the area with a soft cloth illuminated some of the LED backlight nodes and it was apparent that one of the nodes was too close to - or even pushing on the screen.

I looked through posts on here for a couple similar sets, and tried loosening the screws on the back of the set, but the dark spot remains. There is also some flashlighting radiating outward from the spot which kind of screws up the black levels in that area.

I called Samsung and they offered to either replace it with a comparable 3D model - precision shutter, not local dimming - or wait for a new panel from S. Korea, which is currently what I'm doing... going on about 3-4 months. I've read on here that the LED local dimming on the 8500 is superior to the newer precision shutter technology so I'd like to keep the set.

Has anyone else had a similar issue? Any ideas on how to fix?

Your doing the right thing.A quarter size is way too big not to notice. No I dont have this issue on my 55 but I would do exactly what you are doing if it showed up.

+1, a new panel is the better option.
That sucks it's taking so long;
What are they doing, sending it by canoe?
But definitely go with the new panel, hope you get it sorted out.

It's cool watching some of the older movies on the amazing 8500...

A lot of the older movies are coming out on Blu-Ray now and prices are getting better. I picked up "Water World" (1995) on Blu-Ray last night for $9.99 at BlockBuster...

one of only a few Blu-Rays I've seen without the annoying black letterbox bars, so it filled up every inch of the 8500's 55 inch screen with great color and action. I've seen this movie many times but never did it look this good.

Picture quality is amazing on this disc, and we got a big laugh out of all the crazy jet ski stunts. It's sad that Dennis Hopper passed away last year.

long time lurker...decided to register today to see if I could get some opinions on a problem I'm having.

I bought a un55b8500 on 2/1/10 so I still have a couple of weeks on the warranty.

Today, my tv turned off by itself, and I could hear a "clicking" sound coming from the back. Freaking out...I decided to search the forum and I see that samsung has had a problem with bad capacitors on older models. Following advice from others with this issue, I unplugged the set, plugged it back in about fifteen minutes later and it was working. So...I've read most of this thread and i didn't see anyone having a similar issue.

The tv is awesome...but we all know that! is there any suggestion other than having samsung come take a look at my set before the warranty runs out?

Thanks in advance...

Haha... I was thinking the same thing. I followed up on the service order last week. Found out that the local guys reported the shipment as cancelled way back when a replacement set was offered - which was the opposite of what I wanted - and what they told me just a month ago. Originally, in September, I declined the replacement tv offer and asked for a new panel - which the previous rep confirmed was in progress.

Anyways, bad news turned to good as I took matters into my own hands. After 3 1/2 months, I figured why not. I took the tv off the wall to try and loosen all the screws again. I did some trial and error, putting it on the stand and lightly brushing the affected area to see if that helped, then putting it back on the wall. I also took the mount brackets off completely, and with that, the iffy local dimming node seemed to be much less noticeable.

The trick that eventually fixed it was swapping out the bracket spacers that came with the Sanus mount for the spacers that came with the tv - an overlooked packet hiding out in the box. They were wider and shorter, and seemed to fit the groove in the cabinet for the mounting screws perfectly. Apparently, the Sanus bracket spacers were putting too much pressure on the internal hardware surrounding the screw holes, possibly pushing on the screen.

I had to go to three local hardware stores to find the right screws (M8 1.25 x 25mm machine screws), but at last it's fixed. Watched Clash of the Titans the other night and it looked fantastic. So I finally get to enjoy the set and its fabulous picture! Cancelled my service order today.

I have a UN55C7000. I want to stream movies via some of the online Samsung apps, but the fact motion plus is turned on by default makes movies unwatchable. Is there a way to turn this off when viewing material thru any Samsung apps? Tools and menu buttons on the remote dont respond or bring up a menu within samsung apps.

I signed on to ask about this very thing. Finally got around to hooking up my un46b8500 TV to the Internet and checked out downloads from Amazon & Blockbuster. Noticed I could NOT access the menu while the movie was playing and thus had to endure the dreaded "soap opera" effect. Very disappointed with what widgets were available & the general slowness of things, too. Also disappointed that Samsung does not seem to be supporting updates of the widgets for this model while it is for the current crop of TVs. Guess we'll be forever left with useless Yahoo widgets for this TV.

This has made me investigate other options for online access (Roku, blu-ray players, etc.). I'm thinking that with anything I connect via HDMI I'll be able to customize the screen menu?

However -- cartoon movies (Toy Story, etc.) look alright!

Hello and sorry it has been a long time since I have been on the site but we have the exact same issue w/ the our 8500 and eventually called Samsung because unplugging and restarting the set eventually quite working and then it started changing channels randomly and some other oddities like switching the source modes.

Samsung has been out and on the 1st trip changed out the touch pad. (Did not fix the problem) 2nd trip changed the on/off touch pad w/ same results. 3rd trip replaced the motherboard and the screen, original problems are now fixed but the PQ has now gone completely into the toilet. After many hours of calibrating and trying every different combination of settings I can find myself (have not hired a pro yet) I cannot remove the blurriness of the picture. It is very weird, all the HD channels and HD content used to be perfect and now they look OK only until something moves and then the PQ goes bad. Very hard to watch. I am not an "expert" in any sense of the word when it comes to the inner workings of a TV but it seems like something is not processing correctly. (Guess that was a "no duh" statement now that I typed it)

Now after the 4th trip Samsung is talking about replacing the set which is not what we want. I am hoping for another solution since I really do not think Samsung has anything out yet to replace the 8500. I am sure there is something coming but when and I doubt that they would offer that as an option.

Anybody have any words of advice on how to handle a situation like this or just what you think we should do would be greatly appreciated?

Thanks!

I do want to say that the customer service from Samsung & their local contractor has been great and they have done what seems to me everything they can to try and make this situation better.

Do you not remember your settings you had before they replaced the set?

Wasn't Jukebox talking about a new local dimming set coming out from Samsung in the next few months? Maybe you should ask the Samsung Ninjas about hooking you up with that...

Yes, I have them. They do not help either. Now that the motherboard & screen have been changed nothing looks the same on any of the setting like it did before. I can't even get the blacks strightened out.

Thanks I will look for that post and ask them if it is an option. I realy just want them to fix this one I never thought they would jump so fast into just replacing the whole TV

guys I just got a new UN46B8500XFXZA Tv and was wondering how to get the latest sofware update. My current version is 001010. Is this the last one ?

Also, I've noticed that the picture becomes a bit hazy when watching fast moving movies like action. I'm a complete newbie and the settings on the Tv are unaltered (factory ones), any suggestion ?

Not sure what you're talking about, but I would say get a Blu-Ray player and make your adjustments there. The Soap Opera effect on my 8500 was easily removed via the set's internal menus, search this thread for it. Granted, I don't have my TV hooked up to the internet, (I use Blu-Rays and Cable) but it seems to me you should be able to still adjust the display beforehand like the rest of us, then go watch your internet stuff. Read your manual and play around with the settings based on what you find on this thread and what you like. The 8500 actually has the most sophisticated system I have ever seen for controlling processing, judder, smoothness, etc. As I recall, you go to Picture Options/Auto Motion Pro, set up a custom set, experiment a little and you're done. If I am failing to understand then I apologize in advance.

But that's just the point, right -- it's only a problem for InternetTV content. I have read many (most) of the posts and that's where I learned that the settings have to be configured for every connected device. Thus, even if you've configured for, e.g., cable input, you still have to configure again for, e.g. blu-ray. Connect to the internet and try InternetTV yourself!
