Just want to watch shows already in my collection, no recording, recommend software?

I have a laptop with a 2ghz Turion processor, 3gb ram radeon 3200hd video card. I'd like to hook it up to my hdtv directly or through the 360 and turn it into an htpc. I can use my harmony remote to somewhat control the laptop, so that's a plus.

I have a vast library of downloaded and recorded shows in all kinds of formats(avi, mpg, mp4, mkv, you name it). Not interested in recording anything, just want to be able to watch what I have.

I do have a WDTV, which does most of what I want, except it doesn't handle DTS audio and some mkv movies.

What software solution is best for someone like me? Would like something that's easy to set up and can handle many formats. Thanks.

Windows media center works pretty good.

Playon is great, my brother uses that for his 360 and ps3. Mediaportal is what i use for my htpc.
Take a look at the sticky for media portal. I dont have a tuner i just watch the shows.

I like windows media center with media browser plug-in. I have it set up to launch AVIs in WMP and MKVs in MPC-HC.

Ok thanks. When you say windows media center, are you talking about a direct hookup to the tv, or through a 360 or some other extender?

Will also check out playon and mediaportal

We're talking about software built in to Vista Home Premium and Ultimate, as well as XP media center edition.

Another question. If I go with media center, will it let me forward/rewind my videos? I thought I read somewhere that the files have to be in wtv or some format specifically in order for media center to ff/rew. I'd rather not have to convert my collection if possible. Thanks.

XBMC is also another option in case you don't already have Vista or Windows 7.

if you have vista or win7 use media center. if not get media portal (becuase its free).

i recommend media center for those using dvr functions and live tv.

if you use media center definitely get the media browser addon. besides looking amazing it will let you launch any external player you want.

btw, skipping depends on what format you are in. if you are watching a dvd skipping skips chapters, in mkv, its a 30 sec skip, in dvr its a 30 skip. ffd and rw still work as normal.

Since you're not interested in recording anything, have you looked into getting a media streamer unit instead? The Xtreamer seems to be a pretty powerful unit and it has an ethernet port to work with the files on your computer and it can also view youtube and other videos from the web.

See one review here that mentions DTS audio. I'm pretty sure it can handle mkv as well.

It doesn't require any software and comes with a remote control. I'm seriously considering one if I don't build a HTPC.
