Thanks KonicaTech for the help, much appreciated! I'm wondering if this is a bug? I believe all of the picture modes, led local dimming was OFF...

Also watched Dave Mathews Band Live in Concert in Blu ray, looked real nice...

Doe, now I have to get more movies again..... Doh...

The LG service person I talked to did not give me a number to call in case if I had to cancel my appointment, hopefully they call me before they are on their way....

For the sake of comparison, you should retake your shots on p.40 of Dark Knight. Hopefully it's as black as it can be. I am keeping my fingers crossed for my set.

Guys:

I had two February 2010 sets and local dimming defaults to on with both of them. In fact I had made a comment a number of posts back how bad the backlighting looked without local dimming. Chad was seeing the opposite of what I saw on mine. He saw lighter cloudy spots on dark scenes, while I see dark colored blotches on light scenes (especially light panning scenes)

Local Dimming on the LHX makes a HUGE difference, where as Local Dimming on my LX6500 does not change the uniformity of the backlight much at all.

Glad to hear Chad found an easy fix for his issue and can enjoy his new set.

the big q's i would like to know is; do u have dse. this appears to be my only big issue with this set. i watched that new owl movie w/ my daughter and wife last night and the blacks were incredible.
why is it that i only see this when the camera pans? i do not see it when the image is still. we aren't dealing w/ a video processing issue are we?

also as i have a 02/10 build ld was defaulted to on as well....

I don't think it is a processing issue. I can see the spots if I turn off all inputs and just have my Onkyo AVR and the TV on. If there is no input signal, the AVR shows a blank blue screen. I can definately see the dark colored areas on that blank sceen.

airgas1998:

Yes I do see dse, it kind-of depends on the quality of feed, sometimes its very noticable, and watching blu-ray not as much, but it's there, not sure if I'm accurate in this, but for what I watched last night, I only saw a few times, not like it's always there....

I watched Avatar last night and the beginning where the outer space shot was, totally black, but that movie was animation generated, can't really use that for auctual, rather like a movie shot with a camera with skin tones, grass, pavement, etc. etc.

With Led Local Dimming ON, it's way better.....

Check out a hockey game in HD and it should pop out at you. That would be the easiest way to demonstrate to a service tech as (a) lots of white (b) constantly panning camera. I don't notice the DSE 90% of the time, but once you spot it, it's hard to ignore. I believe you were to have a tech visit today (or soon), and it might be hard to track down material to demonstrate the issue. Particularly as it isn't the issue you originally thought you had.

does anybody out there have a perfect set....in particular no dse..i am thinking about going the qvc route, but i don't want to waste my time either.this is the only flaw that i currently have unfortuneately it's one i easily see.

My set came from QVC and my set is perfect as far as I can tell. I am not a hockey fan but I watched several winter sports like sking and never spotted any DSE. I thought QVC was sold out of their LHX'S? I also ran NONY'S test in the IRE's with pattern on inner. I think his test should be very accurate as the hockey ice may have someones blood in it

when did you purchase from them? what is your build date?
i think i'm going to send original back to newegg and reorder w/ qvc. i called them to verify return policy and they said,"30 days 8.95 return fee if you use qvc label." i quizzed him 8.95 even if it's a large item that requires special shipping. he says "correct". unless nony or others think at this point i'm wasting my time and will more than likely get another defective set i want to try one more time. this set is very nice indeed...

Purchased last July, delivered Aug. 18
Build date Nov. 2009

I just got off the phone with QVC and this set is no longer and hasn't been available through them for quite some time. Do you know for sure they still have them?

Correct. QVC shows it listed, you can put it the purchase cart, go through the rigmarole of trying to purchase, but they don't have them.

In general, the LHX/LH85 firmware builds are identical. However, the config file, specifically RELEASE.cfg, is unique to each model. Release.cfg is embedded in filename.epk.

btw i forgot to mention when i received my set from newegg it looks like it was a direct ship from lg (ca). i saw this label on the box.
I posted a new review on Newegg basically rescinding my earlier glowing comments about this set. I see a couple of the people here also posted negative comments.
The price on this particular set has stayed the same when the other LG sets have went up and down over the last month or so. In particular the LX6500 series and the LE8500 sets have bounced up and down from original retail to 1200-1500 off. Even the LH90 has went up and down, yet the price on this set has stayed the same, and have not seen it out of stock. Do they have a lot of these units they are trying to move?

The set was launched and discontinued all within a week (that may be an exaggeration, but not by much). As it wasn't marketed and never readily available on store shelves, LG may have quite a number of them sitting around. Who knows. I thought they were just about gone when I purchased mine in August '10.

Don't quite understand your lg (ca) - are you saying it came from a LG warehouse in Canada?

Sorry, had a Seniors moment there! When we see CA, we automatically think Canada, whereas in the US, you think California. The reason so many of my shippings from the US to Ontario, Ca, end up in Ontario, California!

the big question i have is how many of these sets suffer from dse? why was this unit production run so short? is it because of this known issue,(dse) or faulty media boxes. how does a company kill this so quickly, there has to be some known reason.
Just to clairify:

In my last post I made a mistake replying to airgasses remark to dse, and did not realize that was dirty screen effect, where I said I had dse, which I don't think I do....

But....
Aafter playing around with some settings on Expert1 and Expert2, depending on the source, whatching HD cable tv is usually fine, and blu-ray is great, sometime though I find it difficult to focus on the image I'm watching, looks blurry sometimes, and I shake my head. blinking my eyes as to what's the deal here, then change the channel, and it's perfect, so don't know, but to clairify, I don't believe I have DSE, ( dirty screen effect ), all my IRE test screens appear to be just fine....

Nony,

Thanks for your response. Here is my current firmware info:

Panel

Firmware Version(MP): 3.17.00(0.0.32.21)
Micom Version: V3.23
Compile Date & Time: 20090724 (I forgot to record the time)

Media Box

Firmware Version(MP): 3.17.00(0.0.32.21)
Micom Version: V3.03
BaseBand SW Version: V1.12.28, Date:2009-07-22a
Compile Date & Time:20090724

My secondary firmware is the same version.

I know there is at least one newer version of the firmware (3.23), since it is reported in the thread, but unfortunately the problem seems to persist with that version.

Do you know if there is a newer version on the LGtechassist website? My set is still under warranty, so perhaps I should just call LG tech support and see what they say.

Thanks again.

Did you go ahead with the service call?

I, and I'm sure others, are wondering what the outcome was.

Do tell please.

For anyone interested, I went through this entire thread and put together a word doc of what I thought were the most important aspects with regards to the 55LHX.

See attached.

The Tech called me, and wanted to talkt to me with what I've been having issues with, told him mt set defaulted with led local dimming was off, turned that back on and it's way better, but I told him about the tru motion problem, he said he didn't know a-lot about it, I told him there was a firmware update for it, he said he would track it down and get back to me to install the firmware update for me.

My set is working good, depending on soources, would show the amount of tru/motion ( HD Comcasd cable shows low to medium amount of Frequently )
( Blu-ray Not noticable very much )

When watching certain shows, I sometimes have a issue with focusing on the screen, I blink a bunch of times, it's wierd, not sure if it's getting use to LED type of set, being use to typical LCD, but I'm getting that from time to time, my eyes seem to have a hard time with focusing....

There is a newer version on the LGtechassist web site - it's version 3.21 and addresses the lipsync issue by disabling AC-3 in the EDID. But it doesn't address the TruMotion/Speaker bugs. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...2#post19410442 Working with LG is your best bet.

After 6 months, you'll find this set really comes into it's own.

I respect your experience with this set so, are you suggesting that it requires a break-in period? And if not, could you expand on your comment a little more.

Konica, and myself, both felt after about 6 months, we seemed to have deeper colours and a fuller picture. Still having problems of getting a handle on calibrating this set accurately. Have straight lined the THX 100IRE values to 10IRE, and have now found by using the Spears and Munsil Clipping Pattern to adjust the RGB CMS values, we're getting a dam good picture!

Try my THX values flat lined with my S&M results for the RGB CMS.
If you have the S&M DVD, pick the Clipping Pattern. Normally if you have the Brightness and Contrast set right, you'll see All the Boxes (6 or 7) within the White box, and more or less for the Green. Usually the Red and Blue are Solid colours, meaning they're Clipping and Over saturating. Adjust the RGB CMS Values to get the most and clearest amount of boxes inside their main boxes.

Shouldn't find any Yellow with the following:

CB's______________CMS:
100: -10, -5, 0 __RC: -6
90: 2, 2, 5 ______T: -4
80: 11, 8, 8_____GC: -4
70: 19, 12, 15____T: 9
60: 23, 14, 19___BC: 2
50: 20, 11, 15____T: -4
40: 14, 7, 11
30: 13, 8, 10
20: 5, 2, 5
10: 1, 0, 1
