IGP or Dedicated GPU for Blu-Ray Playback

Thread Starter
I'd like to play Blu-Ray video on my big screen TV at 1080p. I want the video quality to appear as good as a standard dedicated home theater Blu-Ray DVD player.

Will an IGP ATI Radeon HD 3300 provide high quality?
Or should I go with a dedicated GPU? (like the ATI Radeon HD 4550 or something else better?)
Or just buy a dedicated Blu-Ray player?

I want a silent PC too, so reducing noise is a factor.

Thanks,

Jake

The HD 3300 will work good enough. It's a weak GPU but if you don't need it for anything graphics intensive it will play HD @ 1080p (which doesn't require a very powerful GPU). Personally, I'd buy a cheap (but considerably more powerful) addon card if you intend to do anything else.

Yes, HTPC HD BD playback will look as good as stand alone players assuming you have sufficient hardware.

Edit: here's an article you should read.

Thanks for the article and info.

What would you consider for a addon card?

4650 if you don't care about bitstreaming, 5550 when it comes out if you do.

stand alone bd player > graphics card > integrated graphics
