Doing more work on it today. Sadly, work is swamped, so doing it when I can. By the end of this week it should be fully completed piece by piece. Going for combining T1 and 2 today from the last two threads.

It was just released on DVD (no BR) and is also available on iTunes, Vudu and Amazon in HD for rental...

It is called "Miss Bala" and it is a rare film which I mixed dialog, music and SFX.... a one man mix.

Most definitely R-rated, but an interesting look at what is going on in Mexico with the drug ware from a wholly unique perspective... the director is someone to be watched, and it is really an amazing piece of film making from that was done on a very tight budget...

As another note for film lovers, there are only 127 edits in the entire film.... by comparison, that would be a small amount of edits even for one reel (~18 minutes) in a typical commercial feature now a days....

On of my favorite films I've worked on and very proud of the mix.. I took fellow member alexg75 to a screening and he can chime in if he wants....

Rotten Tomatoes Miss Bala Page (89% positive rating)

Rented "Miss Bala" on Vudu HDX yesterday. Thank you for the recommendation. I LOVE these type of movies. Yes, the director is one to watch. Some of the angles he used to film from gave me the feeling that I was peering into the lives of these people, like an unsuspecting visitor. And some of the long takes were incredible. Another aspect that I really appreciated.

Great job on the mix too. Some really good ambience and the ending sequence was really immersive. Well, the whole film was immersive to a degree but the end came alive and I liked that the tension on screen was partly delivered by the sound.

One last note...as a CIH screen user, I appreciate that the subs were within the 2.35:1 frame and not in the black bar area.

Drive (DTS HD MA) Tier 1

This film maybe had a about 15 mins where you actually thought you listening to a MCH presentation. That 15 mins which alone would be near reference is why I don't give this Tier 2. There were some really nice bass moments including it's aid to gunshots, which were making me duck for the first time in a long time. But overall this was a quiet moody presentation reminiscent of Heat of the style of some of the score, and scenes that has long pauses between dialog lines. All that you hear however recorded without any issues, and dialog always sounded clean and appropriate to the location of the scene.Balance was spot on. All in all this is a very good companion for the film, however for the purpose of this thread it won't win much praise IMO.

Ok new thread created. Once it is approved by a mod, I will link it here and we can start using that one.

Hopefully Bryan sees it once I do, and he can add it to the first post.

Hello,
People are raving over immortals on the subwoofer page? I do not agree. I just watched it and was not impressed at all. Yes the LFE was strong in various parts, but the this was a Tier 1 in my book. It just seemed very average to me? I guess I have been spoiled with movies like Tansformers 3, Tron, and Battle LA.

Watched The Three Musketeers tonight. It was a fun, swashbuckling yarn. The LFE during the airship battle, or just whenever an airship is on screen, is pure kick me in the Jimmy goodness.

Also the sound was harsh at times..

New thread is created. Not sure how to get it made sticky and this one taken down, but will now start doing the comments on this thread to add the movies.

I don't chime in here often because "the hun" attacks me but I'm back. Hugo looks fantastic but this has to be the worst thing I've heard in years. Ridiculously peaky at around 7-8K and zero bottom. I think they let a deaf 70 year old man mix this thing. I'm guessing a 10 dB boost at 8K. Horrendous. My new system is hot rodded B&W 801s up front and ADS L1503s in 4.0. The vocals were so zipped up as to be unlistenable.

I totally agree with you! I was expecting reference quality! I would give Hugo a Tier 1 for audio.

Hugo Tier 1

I enjoyed the audio in Hugo. It seemed to fit the period they were showing on screen. That said, there were opportunities for lfe that would have matched and accentuated the action and mood.

Have you heard from the mods yet? They the one who can close this and make the other one sticky.

Wow,
I just read the review for the New Mission Impossible Blue ray, Dolby True HD 7.1. This sounds like the Demo track of the year! http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/6566...ssible_gp.html

Can't wait to sample the 7.1. I've heard some great (TRON: LEGACY, THOR) and not so great, and hoping this will be great!!

Great movie! I saw it twice in IMAX...haven't seen a movie twice in a theater since SW:Ep III.

The mix is just as great as the movie...super detailed, dynamic and strong use of the low end and surrounds.

FWIW,Gary Rydstrom handeled the FX mix on this show, and those of you who know the name should know what to expect : )

If you aren't familiar, here's just a select sampling of his previous mixes...
T2
Jurassic Park
Toy Story 1,2
Saving Private Ryan
and SW:Episodes I & II

Hi, just upgraded my apartment living room setup to a 7.2 energy setup (2x RC-50s, RC-LCR, RC-10 surrounds, RC-mini surround backs, driven by a Pioneer Elite VSX-33, Oppo BDP-83). I've got a few 7.1 titles that are good, looking for some suggestions for demo material that would exercise my now upgraded setup. I'm not looking just to rock the place, but anything that uses the all of the speakers well. Any concert blurays at 7.1?

So far I've watched / listened to:

Jurassic Park Trilogy, Transformers 3, Fiddler on the Roof. Will also view my Star Wars hexology, but that's 6.1.

Sooo.... any ideas of what would be good to get (or watch if I already have it)?

Which has some incredible audio during the war sequences. Gives RYAN a run for it's money.

War Horse (DTS-HD MA 7.1) - REFERENCE

Gary Rydstrom does it again. An amazing soundmix. The trench warfare sequences are an audiophiles dream come true and the dialogue and John Williams score sound clear as could be.

Rambo: Extended Cut will make your ears bleed. Super 8 is fantastic as well.

I really wish these lists one day excluded cartoons ! FCS.

Ok, got to be nice, some adults actually I guess enjoy them. Lets have a separate list. Having them next to actual movies is non-sense IMHO, whether or not they might have the best video/sound tracks in the world.

It makes perfect sense. We did separate the concerts for obvious reasons. Animated films have dialog, effects sounds, music score, just like a live action film does so they can be judged on the same merits.
Oh, and those are not cartoons!
