Plasma picture quality

Hi everyone,

I just bought a Panasonic 50" Model:TC-P50X1 last week. The picture quality looks good, except for when I was watching any of the playoff baseball games in HD. For some reason the pitchers uniform, regardless of the team, looked a little distorted and not crystal clear. Any other angles of the game looked fine.

I know that sometimes when there is fast motion like football/basketball it can get a little distorted, but the distortion for the pitcher was there even when he was standing still.

Any ideas? Should I just return it and try with another TV?

Thanks

Sounds like your input, what type of connection and service you using?, cable?, sattellite....or maybe SD sourced??

You have a good display, but it's not the best (only 720p). I agree with Bud-man -- it really sounds like your source, not the display.

The problem could have been with that particular camera or the operator. I watch
a lot of sports and almost every game has one camera angle that is not as clear as the others or is even in a brighter or darker shade of the same colors viewed from the other angles. . .

I'm using brighthouse cable. I'm also using the component cables that came with the cable box. Would an HDMI cable improve that aspect of the image that is giving me problems?

I thought that the HD transmissions weren't higher than 720p? Would a 1080P make a visible difference for HD sports?

Thanks for your quick replies.

Some networks broadcast in 1080i. With my cable company I can set the input as 1080i, 720p, 480i, etc on the box itself, but it doesn't automatically do it when switching from one station to the next. In other words, it's defaulted as 1080i and when I switch to ESPN, which is broadcast in 720p, it doesn't switch to 720p.

Try an HDMI cable. Buy one from monoprice who is one of the sponsers. You can get one for a few bucks from them. Don't spend $30 on an HDMI cable.

If other sources or even channels look sharp and clear then I would agree it's the source. I have the smaller 42X1 and it looks great with great sources. 720P from at least 8' should look fine. If you sit closer then that a 1080P set may look sharper to you. An HDMI from your cable box may also give you a cleaner picture.

There's you answer. If it was a problem with your TV or setup it would have the problem at all camera angles.

I've also noticed this at times with sports.

At least in my personal experience, HDMI is a definite improvement over component cables in regards to picture quality. And a 1080i broadcast on a 1080p hdtv is clearer than a 720p broadcast though not as noticeble a difference as that between the HDMI and component cable. . .
