single or duel receiver system

I currently have two receivers running the audio and surround sound in my house. Here is a quick run down of what I have and am trying to do. I have 2 in ceiling speakers and and in wall volume control in my master bedroom as well as two outdoor speakers with an in wall volume control on my patio. Currently these are powered by a Sony str-de197 2 channel receiver for music/audio only. I also have have a Pioneer VSX-914 powering my 5.2 infinity set up in our living room/tv room. My issue at this time I dont have a setup where I can listen to music in all rooms or listen to the audio from the surround sound in either if the other two rooms.

I am admittedly worse than a novice I know just enough ro really do things wrong! Any advice on how to have all the speakers in the house on the same system without having to break the bank would be greatly appreciated. Considering what I have spent on all the equipment I would like to budget no more than 1k for these changes.

if the receiver you want to use for whole house audio can handle 4 ohm loads, then you can use an impedance protecting speaker switch http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=300-608 to select and control the various speakers in each room. There is also a version with volume controls.

Thank you for you reply M_Vanmeter.

I guess if I want to go to a single receiver I need it to be a decent home theater receiver since that is its main use in our home. My Pioneer says its only rated for 6 ohms and 8 ohms so it does not appear to be an option for what you are suggesting. Can you recommend a home theater receiver that might fit my intended application.

Again thank you for the helo.

I don’t see any reason why it can’t work with what you’re using now. All you need to do is send one of the record outputs from the Pioneer to the Sony. The record outputs (i.e., from the VCR, CD-R etc. inputs) always carry the signal from the source you’ve selected to listen to. So, when you select say, DVD or CD on the Pioneer, the audio signal is present on the record out jacks. Send them to a Sony input, and you’re in business. Of course, if you’re only using the digital connections between the CD, DVD, etc., you’ll have to add the analog (red/white RCA) connections, as the analog and digital signal paths are separate.
