Samsung LN40B630 Internet@TV.. Help!

Hello,

I bought the above TV from Best Buy 2 months ago, and discovered this week that Samsung have released the Internet@TV service with all the Yahoo! TV widgets like Blockbuster which mean you can download movies and shop on amazon direct from your TV.

The only problem is that whilst the Best Buy website maintains my set has this functionality, the Samsung website says it does not.

That said, if you go to the downloads area for the model there is a Firmware Upgrade (dated 14th Oct 2009), even though if I go to 'Software Upgrade' on the set itself, it states there's none to upgrade (I am running version 2009/07/01_001011). Does this include Firmware as well?

I've tried to download the Firmware Upgrade file from the Samsung site, but it is a Winzip that my Mac laptop cannot unzip.

Even if I could, I'm seriously worried that it could blow up my TV as there seem to be a lot of inconsistencies in information about this model from Samsung amongst others, and their Product Support area is worse than useless.. Can anyone help?!

Thanks.

The B630 does not (yet?) have internet@TV functionality. There was an e-mail sent out about a month ago to registered B630 owners stating to the contrary, but the e-mail was confirmed to have been sent in error (intended only for B650 and above owners).

You shouldn't worry about blowing up your TV by upgrading the firmware (just make sure it is the B630 firmware - don't try another model thinking you'll get extra features). Unfortunately, Samsung doesn't post release notes indicating what changes have been made in each version of the firmware and people who have upgraded their firmware have not reported any significant performance/function improvements.

If you want the streaming functionality of the internet@TV, I recommend sticking with your B630 TV and purchasing one of the many current-model bluray players with assorted internet video streaming capabilities. If you own an older bluray player you don't want to part with, the Roku box is an affordable stand-alone streaming option.

Also, I just check the BestBuy site to see how badly they screwed up and in fact they didn't. I didn't see any mention of Internet@TV - only the InfoLink function that gives you some very basis RSS feeds (news, weather, stocks, whoopie!). The question and answer section is also pretty clear that the B630 is not DNLA compliant and doesn't include the internet streaming functions built in to the B650 and higher sets.

Thanks for the advice, but this is what I found on the Best Buy website!!

Look at the paragraph at the bottom of this attachment..

As jsirbak pointed out, if you had read and posted the entire image of the BB page you would have noticed that only the very basic InfoLink function was provided for this TV model.

Really? There is no disputing the fact that it states;

"Get access to great instant content on this LCD HDTV. Connect to the Internet and you will have instant access to stream movies, listen to music and a wide variety of content through your HDTV."

Nowhere does it mention needing additional hardware to facilitate this.

Also, if you follow the link (see attached) of BestBuy.com's Internet Connectable HDTV Products it will take you to my television.

Please see the specific features listed for the product model from the full specifications at the Best Buy Web site below. The general link you keep referring to is a general description of features that may or may not be avaialble from a specific model which has some internet capability,

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1218079755374

Below I quote the appropriate section

"
InfoLink
Lets you check stock quotes, scores, weather and other RSS content at the touch of a button.

Yawn.

Looks like we'll have to agree to disagree then, as this pointless debate has rapidly become boring.

I don't think I've ever encountered an individual with such a keen interest in the specification of someone else's television set.

Do you work for Best Buy and are trying to avoid a law suit?
