2.1 Receiver recommendation to pair with Oppo 980H and Swans Diva 4.2

Hi,

I'm looking for a stereo receiver for a 2.1 setup in the $300 range.
Oppo 980H as the CD player, and driving a pair of Swans Diva 4.2 speakers.
I plan to add a dedicated media server or Archos like device with high bitrate files, and a sub some time in the future.

I've narrowed down to the following, and would really appreciate some opinions on these choices:
HK3390
HK3490 (for the DAC, not power)
Yamaha RX 397 or 497
Marantz SR4023 refurb.

Some questions as well:
- Given that I'll be using the Oppo, is there any value to getting the HK3490 just for its DAC ?
- I've come across a few posts complaining about weak bass in the HKs - are they justified ? I'm not looking to break windows, but do expect good tight bass.
- How reliable are the Marantz refurbs ?

Thanks,

Sreeram

Is there any chance you'll eventually want to expand beyond 2.0/2.1? If so, I'd go ahead and get a competent surround AVR. If 2.0/2.1 is your end goal, I'd try to find a good deal on an older 2ch integrated (basically an amp with source selection and volume knob). Something like a Rotel 985BX could be had within your budget.

The Pioneer VSX-519V-K is on sale for $180 shipped from Newegg today. I'm not sure if that fits what you are looking for or not, but it looks like a really good deal.

If you're not looking to ever go surround, I'd look for a good deal on an older used integrated amp for a good name like Rotel, Arcam, Carver, etc. Power should be clean and sound quality will be as good as your source.

No - this is for the family room where the TV is banned for life, and it will be a music only setup. I do want a receiver, so I'm staying away from int-amps.

I have a 4.0 HT setup in the basement. May not look like much on paper, but I'm very happy with it, might upgrade the DVD player, but thats about it:
dvd - philips xxx(old)
rcvr - Onkyo SR503
projector - PTAX100U
spkrs - Insgina NS-B2111 * 4 (very nice @ $25/pair)

BTW, Hopkins HT looks very nice - see you have the Swans 6.1.

HAD the 6.1s... let them go about 9 months ago and moved the 2.1s up front. I'm 99% HT and they seemed like a waste in my medium sized room. Now I have so many sets of speakers coming and going I haven't had my own speakers hooked up for months, and probably won't any time soon either. I do still miss the 6.1s, though they were way under-utilized given my listening preferences.
