Help Evaluating Used Receiver

So I was able to find a Pioneer Elite VSX-03TXH for very close to a third of the MSRP (Pioneer's current suggested retail price) and would like to know how I should evaluate this receiver when I go to pick it up.

What should I test?
What should I inspect?

Thanks a lot.

Test where?
Test how?
Test with what?

It should look good, clean and not show signs of wear. It should power up and respond to the remote control. Beyond that, you need a source, display and speakers. I suspect that the best you can do is have the seller demo it.

Yeah I e-mailed him and he said that he will hook-up his sony speakers to it but he didn't want to drive them hard.

Is that an issue, will I be ok if I just keep it at low volume without an like sound driving it hard? Just don't want to take it home and hook it up, pop iron man in and then it gives out.

Thanks for the reply.

And he did not want to drive them hard for what reason? Because the speakers are crappy or will the receiver shutdown. What speakers are you using? If you purchase this the owner should be willing to let you take it home even if he goes with you and connect to your set-up. Then run it like you stole it. If it shuts down give it back to him to carry home. If not, on a used system I would look elsewhere. Its a real bargain for a reason.

yeah, "not wanting to drive it hard" sounds a bit suspicious. There are probably tons of used receivers out there from people who have simply upgraded to something new, so there should be lots of other fish in the sea if this one sounds too "fishy"

There are also refurbs available for attractive prices and they come with return privileges and warranties (short ones).

My advice would be to walk away as it sounds "fishy" as others have mentioned. I would look at some of the refurb deals you see online.

Thanks guys for the advice.

I'm going to go over there tomorrow and ask that he run a few scenes of iron man, etc at high levels and see how it handles. I'll also ask about the warranty. It's a Elite VSX-03 that he got last year and it should still be covered by the 2 year Elite warranty. I'll call pioneer to confirm the serial number.

Again thanks for the help.

Ok, so it was purchased in April brand new but not from an authorized dealer or else I would have gotten it for sure.

But now I'm on my way to Value Electronics to get a 23TXH.

Thanks guys.
