While setting up my new Dell 540s, which I'll use as a HTPC, a Dell drivers and down loads page came up with dozens of drivers, firms wares, etc. for everything from the DVD drive, audio, chip set, etc. I've been downloading all this zip files and saving them as prompted but do I need them and what do I do with them now?

where did you get the pc from? dell? it should have been preloaded if that was the case. if you need to do all then just do one at a time until you have everything working.

if the equipment is working don't upgrade, unless you have a specific need to.

Ok, thanks for the advice. I purchased the 540s from a seller on eBay and supposedly it was a floor model. The unit looks brand new and has warranty until December. The OS was reset because I had to enter all the information as when it's a new OS.

I actually downloaded many of those drivers/downloads which were in the form of a zip file. Now that I have about 250MB of downloads on that file I have no idea what to do with them if anything. Since there were update drivers labeled as "urgent" for the chip set, drive, BIOS, even HD I downloaded them.

The computer was just hooked up to the plasma (which requires adjusting the vertical and horizontal settings) for the first time. A regular DVD tested fine so I don't know if anything needs driver needs updating or not? If it's not broken why fix it but if tweaking it makes it better why not...

It's probably a good time to get Windows 7. It should install the drivers automatically and you won't need the ones from Dell.

I have a 540S but I don't use it as an HTPC.
