Cliffhanger/Last Action Hero - Page 2

Surprised no one mentioned this yet... all the broadcasts (HDNet) and disc releases (UK) of Cliffhanger so far have had severe cropping/zooming compared to the DVD. I could try to dig up the screenshot examples. Hopefully this release will be corrected.

If it's the same as the Aussie version (and it almost certainly is), then initially I thought the same thing, but it's really not that bad once you get into it (and I am talking about PQ here). I became lost in the movie - something I cannot do if EE or DNR is above a certain threshold.

I think the movie is adequately presented - I'd buy it again knowing what I know.

Sony is usually on the ball with DNR/EE, zooming, cropping.

Watched Last Action Hero last night-- poor PQ and so-so AQ.
Picture goes from soft to sharp frequently, poor definitions, more than usual amounts of video noise like some of the first Blu Rays on the market. Offers very little in the way of upgrade.

Drat! At least it is widescreen. Maybe they will re-release it with a new transfer later, and Leo LeFart can pass gas one last time!

Obviously you've never seen it, or you'd get what that reference is from.

Not much for January for me personally so I'm throwing down not knowing the BD quality but I'll be optimistic. It may drop lower in price which is better still but I like the movie enough to go for it anyway and preorder now given a pretty reasonable price.

Haven't seen much talk on either BD in my travels lately. Since the BD releases are close, I'll bump the thread to see if anyone has gotten them and their impressions of the BDs.

Its a shame the uncut version of Cliffhanger will probably never see the light of day.

Cliffhangar is at least some bait for me for January but I think I'll rent it first. I'll look towards reading more reviews and opinions on the PQ.

Ralph's review for Cliffhangar is now up as well.

Hi Folks

I'm new here at AVS. I'm from Switzerland.

I did a comparison between the Sony Europe DVD (anamorphic Widescreen) of Last Action Hero and the new Blu Ray.
The DVD looks like garbage.
I could never really watch it on Big Screen. Especially since i have a FullHD Projector.

I would love to post the url for the comparison but because i'm new here i can't post urls for the moment.
you can find the comparison at comparescreenshots.slicx.com

The Last Action Hero BD really is a revelation after all these years of crap DVDs, etc.

Wow, that DVD is awful! The Blu-Ray looks pretty decent to me, though, not sure why so many people are saying it's no good.

Cliffhanger has fantastic audio but the video is slightly above average. It is obviously using the same master from the 2000 S.E. or prior.
I forgot it was so high up in my queue and it was shipped to me the other day.

I'll say one thing and that's I'm glad I didn't buy it and rented first. The quality is so uneven to the point of it being ricidulous. Half the time the characters are as pale as ghosts and the picture is too soft for the most part as well!
It's still a bajillion times better than the DVD.

Cant wait! finally received Last Action Hero today.

Screenshot comparisons of Cliffhanger at caps-a-holic.com.

Looks mediocre. Some odd zooming/cropping, some mushy DNR. At least it blows away the lousy dvd. I hope Last Action Hero fared better.

Looks very good, better color balance and much better detail than the DVD. Film edges are not visible in any of the Blu-ray disc shots, film edges quite visible in the DVD shots, there is a little loss and some gains in reference to the DVD framing.

The sound track is a knockout when one considers its age.

Was a definite buy for me!!

Last but not least, the disc loads up to the main menu, no forced previews!!

Have to agree the audio is not bad for its age. Just finished watching it. Forgot how long it was.

I picked up a copy of Cliffhanger yesterday. I gotta say the menu is a really well made montage set to music. It made the movie seem so dramatic and epic which it really is.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but Capsaholic just posted a comparison the LAH Blu-ray and German DVD:

http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergl...st_action_hero

You can really see how the Blu-ray fixed the weird reddish blue tint the DVD has. This tint issue was present on the US and Japanese Superbit discs as well. Not to mention the huge jump in PQ...

Old thread bump, but I thought I would share my experience with the Blu-ray of Last Action Hero. I bought the Blu-ray for $10 a while back, but finally got around to watching it.

For starters, coming from the pan&scan DVD, ANYTHING would be an upgrade. I have to agree with most of what Ralph stated in his review. Most shots are very sharp with excellent clarity: true HD in OAR. In between these shots, however, appear to be a grab bag of soft focus, optical effect softness, optical zoom ins, and other distractingly bad shots that appear to be from the source. I could not see any indications of artificial sharpening. I couldn't spot any direct uses of DNR - often what I first suspected to be DNR was either bad makeup or soft focus. This certainly isn't a newly mastered 4K transfer to blow your mind. But as far as I can recall from seeing it in the theater, it surpasses my memory and most importantly, surpasses any other home release.

The audio is aggressive, but almost in an annoying way. Since this whole film is essentially a spoof of action films in general, they even use the audio to make the point. OK, we get it, random loud guitar shreds with every punch thrown and shot fired is satirical and humorous. Dialog was as clear as one could expect from an Awnuld film "Donneeee ged dowwwwn!"

Definitely worth a trip to the bargain bin if you're a fan.

It was the first SDDS show title, it was mixed to be an advert for the format

Do blu-ray versions distort in that big mountain explosion in center channel, both scandinavian dvd versions did that more or less. And is there picture comparisons region a vs b blurays anywhere in net?

Was LAH mixed in 6 or 8CH? Whilst there was some benefit of the LC/RC channels in SDDS 8CH, I really think 8CH would have been more 'audience friendly' as 3/4/1, not as 5/2/1. Can't really call the channel config 5.1 or 7.1 as Sony claim their LFE channel is "full range".
