Acer H5360 HD3D (DLP 1280x720) Video Projector - Page 3

It seems to run okay right side up.
I need it to work upside down for my room.

Guys, do you plug the pc to av receiver then to projector? I'm not sure if current gen receiver can pass-through 720p 120hz signal to projector.

I'm concerned about the reports of shutdowns when run upside-down. For me this will be an abasolute imperative that it is mounted from the ceiling.

Can people who are using it in an upside down configuration without issues please respond?

I have major issues upside down.
It shuts down now less then before however it still shuts down inadvertantly.

It will not turn on with the remote. I have to disconnect power, plug it back in, and then I can use the remote to turn it back on.

Here is the real kicker though, once I turn it on with the remote the remote does not work anymore for any other functions. I have used the remote to turn it on from any location in the room however after its on the remote doesnt work from anywhere at all.

Once, after being frustrated with the upside down issues I did turn it rightside up and it worked. I have not done this again so I do not know if rightside up still works.

I am using mine upside down without issue, yet.

5360 3d dlp features:
1280 x 720 resolution, 3200:1 contrast ratio, 2500 ANSI Lumens for brightness, 720p graphics (1280x720)

sounds like the exact same problem I had with my first one. Wonder if they had a bad batch of them from the factory. bummer! Good thing that amazon is quick about turning around either refunds or replacements. I got my new one the next business day after reporting the problem. Are youusing yours upside down or rightside up? B/c my problem only happened when it was upside down. It hasn't happened on my replacement since I got it last week. Check the light on top of the projector. if it's solid blue that means there is a problem and it says in manual to contact support.

I am not running it through a reciever however i am using an hdmi switcher which doesn't look to be a high quality product and I'm getting 120hz signal fine.

Sorry Anthony didn't see your extra posts on the next page. I would return that one ASAP if I were you.

Can anyone confirm if the Acer supports Checkerboard 3d format (like the older DLP rear projection TVs) or if it only does 120hz 3d mode?

I keep reading different answers, the official specs just say 120hz but various user reviews mention that it worked with "avatar the game" or some other source in "checkerboard" mode.

Trying to sort out if that gives it a leg up compared to the Optoma hd66.

I think have the same shut down issue when this unit is installed on the ceiling.

I've brought mine to the Acer service center about a month ago and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. I think they tested it right-side up. At that time I didn't think that the issue was because the unit was ceiling mounted. Reading your post, I tested my unit again.

It does seem this issue only happens when the unit is upside down.

What I do now is that I turn on my source (PS3 via HDMI to receiver, HDMI to Projector) first before turning on the projector. If if detects a source, the PJ turns on with no problem (expect for the remote malfunctioning once in a while). Without a source, the PJ just cycles thru the inputs and then shuts down.

I'll probably go back to the service center again. But so far, I just turn on my source first and the PJ runs well. I have logged about 60 hours so far.

This is my first projector and I find the video quality very good for the price.

My remote also works intermittently. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. My unit could be a bad batch from the factory.

Here is my take on the H5360.

After seeing King Kong on Blueray using the H5360 and remembering how it looked on the 720p plasma I just sold, I concluded that the picture quality was not as good as my old plasma.
I then decided to pickup locally here on Sunday a $2300 1080p CF181D projector just so I can have an idea of what I may be missing going with the lowend 720p from Acer.

I wanted to save money getting the Acer however I can afford to spend more for quality if it is a substantial quality difference.

Here are my findings in 2D (I do not have a 3D capable PC).

The quality difference is substantial. The H5360 is a far LESS superior quality blueray display than this new more expensive 1080p projector. I swear to you people that this new projector is better than anything that I see at Bestbuy even.

I have a 100 inch Grandview screen.

In looking at King Kong I saw so many critical details that I just did not see using the H5360.

If you must have 3D and are going in knowing that you are losing substantial quality then so be it. However, do not be under the impression that you are getting something for free. Dont think that youve outsmarted everyone else.

Also, watching the TRex battle on the Acer did not give me a headache however it was uncomforatble to watch. I actually wanted the screen, my favorite, to be over. On the LG every movement is fluid and visible. The colors are soooo rich. I see small scratches and tiny hairs its amazing.

I wanted the H5360 to work for me so I went throught the ordeal of ordering it, sitting it up, and now cancelling it. I would get a new one if the difference where just a little more than small. The difference as it turns out is huge.

Goodbye silly 3D.

At four times the price and 1080p, as compared to a low end 720p projector? Duh.

I was thinking the same thing. You can only fairly compare it to other 720p projectors in the same price range (ie: Optoma 66/65 and the like).

That's like saying that my $22,000 Honda Accord just isn't quite as good of a car as your $88,000 Mercedes.

Its not the same as comparing a 22K Honda to an 88K Mercerdes. I dont even drive my car enough to consider paying even $20K.

I could not afford a 88K Mercedes. I can afford a 2K projector though. I do use my projector a lot for PC display, home theater, watching the news, etc.

Its more like comparing a bag of oreos ($3) to a box of fine chocolate cookies that cost 3 times more ($10). I can put that inside the budget knowing I am really getting some really good quality cookies that do not have a bunch of lard mixed with sugar.

I can add $1500 more to my home TV/theater/PC display budget. I spend so much more time watching TV, blueray, cable, PC displays than I do riding inside my car.

Look, you can do the low quality 3D route if you want okay and save a few bucks.

This 100" King Kong movie looked so good that I have been losing sleep thinking about it. Dude I swear its better than IMAX our any movie theater.

This guy at projectorreviews has put together a review that is more extensive for this projector then for any other projector. He was sold on it. I am sold on it also.
I have decided to pay $2.50 per day more (over 3 years) to really get some quality. You guys probably spend more on that each day on a bottle of water.

Look, you can lead a horse to water but you cant make him drink.

I am telling you. Be smart and spend a little more for something you will use for hours every day. Amortize it out and you will see that its cheap.

This projector is 120Hz so it may actually do PC 3D anyway.

well, for me, I'm pretty happy with it, especially for the price. i have no complaints about pq except for a touch of contrast. I love the 3d and think it's got a great picture even in 2d mode, the colors were the kicker for me, overall the optoma hd66 was a higher quality projector but this one is brighter and the colors truer even after extensive configuration. I have a 60" plasma 1080p for everyday use...this is really for games and doing it big on the back of the garage. Nobody has ever not been blown away by it.

Gonthorn, I do not think that checkerboard works. I believe it's all software pageflipping or 120 projector mode. I tried all modes in the 1z3d driver before picking up the nvidia vision which works flawlessly on both the x102s and the nvidia vision glasses.

Anthony, your projector may do 3d but probably won't support dlp link. I would imagine that the nvidia vision would work if you chose generic 120hz monitor. When you turn 3d mode on this server or the HD66 it becomes more grey b/c of the flashing light to control the glasses. The nvidia dont require that b/c its got it's own IR emitter. if you buy the gt240 and put it in a computer that can handle it supposedly youll be able to do 3dbluray through the nvidia vision. But it doesnt sound like 3d is your driving issue as it is for me. Congrats on the new projector, enjoy!

fernanz73, you really sound like you know what youre doing with a separate 1080p for quality and then the acer for 3D that looks good but slightly less quality.

I can only have one so after reading youre reviews I gave it a shot. I may have stayed with it had it not crashed on me.

Here is one downside to me spending so much.
I cannot afford a PC to run 3D. I am broke.

fernanz73, can you try 3D using your plasma, just for kicks.

it won't accept a 120hz signal....already tried it. ;-) Can't do 3d without 120hz so you can get 60hz per eye.

Can you do me a favor and switch yours to generic crt and tell us what happens using your new Nvidia ?

When you use DLP Link glasses, there is no emitter required for the glasses to sync to. Instead the sync is in the image itself. I believe this is done by "flashes" of grey for 1/120 of a second every 1/60 of a second. I don't know how the glasses distinguish these trigger frames from the main image. But anyway, this obviously affects the image to some extent hence the "dull" comments that some report.

Nvidia is not dlp link right ?

fernanz, as it turns out, eventhough my lg cf181d is said to be 120Hz the specs list 60Hz.

nVidia is not DLP link.

So as far as I know, for a projector like the H5360 which supports both standards, you couldn't mix both types of glasses at the same time.

With strong rumours that there will be an adaptor box (not the Mitsubishi one) for these 720p projectors that can convert other 3D formats (side by side satellite 3D, or checkerboard 1080p), to a projector compatible one, we may end up in the rediculous scenario, where you need two sets of LCD glasses

1) nVidia glasses for playing games (and possibly a PC based 3D blu-ray player)
2) DLP link for 3D satellite TV such as Sky 3D (UK), PS3, (and possibly a real 3D blu-ray player)


So if you want to play games or watch with friends, you may need 2 sets of 3-4 glasses!!

Okay so I was thinking why should I spend 2295 on my cf181d and not get 3D when I can get 3D for $700 with the h5360. Therefore I hooked up the h5360 once more last night (after a week with the cf181d) before I ship it back and I got a good 55 minutes from it before it shutdown.

I put in my King Kong movie again. This is my reference blueray since I love it and Ive seen it so many times and I know what to look for.

As it happens my first time my conclusions are the same.

The details, colors, quality, extremely powerful resolution and also, the way all this stuff is put together to give a film like look has made me decide to go completely with the cf181d and spend the extra money. Heck, it really looks 3D however not the kind of 3D that comes out at you but the kind of 3D where you are looking inside a viewport and everything you see has depth and is 3D however its all inside a box and your looking in.

Man oh man is it different. Wow.

I have 2 projectors set-up right now. I have a JVC HD950 which is a really really stunning 2D projector. I use it all the time for blu-rays. Then I have this H5360 which I am only using for 3D (movies or games). I watched 10 minutes of a re-coded version of the blu-ray of Monsters vs Aliens and I am very impressed. When you are wearing LCD glasses, colour accuracy etc goes out of the window anyway, unless you calibrate through the glasses.

So why not have 2 projectors if you can afford it? Right now the H5360 is a cheap way into the 3D world. It will be a good while before there are really good 3D projectors, and then you will need a different screen material for them to be optimal. But the H5360 gives a play-pen in the meantime which is more than respectable for watching 3D films and games.

With a blacked our room I can put the H5360 into ECO mode which makes it quiet and the black levels improve. Further black level improvement comes from the LCD glasses themselves which of course darken the image.

For me, having 2 laptops at home that are both 2 years old, I would have to spend 1K on a PC with graphics card.
Thats $1700.
I would rather have the picture quality from the cf181d for $2300 versus the low quality $2d/3d for $1700.

forget about this projector, I've had 2 of them in the past month and both were plagued with issues with them regarding them powering off when mounted upside down. It also has horrible contrast ratio resulting in playing dark games on very high brightness and maxed out contrast which washes out everything else. The colors are awesome and picture is bright out of the box but has almost no tweakable settings to fix these issues. Back to HD66 now and though the colors are not as good, I've gotten most of the stuff to work on old nvidia vision drivers. (sigh) I've sent an email to Nvidia telling them I'd be willing to pay for a supported driver if optoma won't pony up for it. I saved 40 bucks over the Acer and have a much more tweakable image and a considerably longer bulb life. BTW, there is a known issue with the H5360 reverting to bright mode on it's own resulting in far less bulb life. It was a great idea in theory but horribly executed on acers part. Their support is completely nonexistent, you have to PAY for support even on new products! Ridiculous.

fernanz73, I thought that, as you say, "the colors are awesome" on the H5360, until I got my CF181D.
The colors on the H5360 are not awesome at all once you've seen the same movie on the H5360 versus the LG CF181D.

I know you spend so much more money however its worth it.
