Did you crack it open yet? If it really is one disc I'll just order the UK set.
Why can't Warner just release an Ultimate edition then one without the trinkets, they're a bunch of effing dunces.

I did not personally open one, but a poster at blu-ray.com did and he also confirms it is only 1-disc....
I will probably order the UK version as well....too bad Target got such a great version of Oz but such a lame version of GWTW....

It just doesn't add up, how can they charge $39 (the $34 is the sale price) for a single disc catalog title?

Glad I ordered mine from Amazon UK.

Perhaps they're charging by the minute.

I just got back from Target and can confirm it is only 1 disc.
Give me a nice helping of crow.

Something tells me things changed when everyone complained about the WOZ Target Exclusive set.
I would be willing to bet that this was supposed to include 3 discs and someone changed their mind.
The MSRP doesn't add up.
Even the non UCE DVD version has 2 discs and includes a making of and that is $16.99.

BTW, does anyone know how the extras compare to the last UCE that was released back in early 2000s?
I have that set (still sealed) and wonder if there was any reason to keep it.
Are you sure about the 2-disc DVD having extras (besides the commentary)? Remember that the film is spread across 2 discs, while with the BD it's on one disc.

I don't know, a month is pretty short turn-around time for them to act on feedback. Plus, what was there to complain about re: the target WoO set except that it was exclusive to Target? People were happy to get all the discs without any of the fluff. And WoO was a very strong seller in general, so I think both WB and Target are happy with how that went. I doubt the few complainers caused anything to change.

My non-sence...
Target is OVERcharging now, so the "Black Friday" price 'seems' like a deal;
when its not.

Yes, I picked it up the case at Wal-Mart and it says something like, includes the making of Gone With The Wind.

Dang, I was hoping for a $19.99 movie-only release ala Walmart from somebody out there.
Netflix doesn't show they are stocking the BD for rental.

No it's not. The Target WIZ Blu-Ray was 3 discs.

The $34.99 Target GONE WITH THE WIND Blu-Ray is 1 DISC ONLY. I saw it today at Target and read the back of the case. 1 disc only. What a rip-off!!

If you can't get it on Black Friday, then the UCE for $45 from Wal-Mart online or Amazon.com is the way to go; Target's price is obscene.
the bad thing is the one disc is probably only worth about 12.99, it should sell for 19.99 at most. i was willing to pay 34.99 for WOO since it had everything the other version had minus the trinkets

the slickdeal will be when you can get the wizard of oz 3 disc set on black friday for 12.99.

Those caps look as good as can be expected given the movies age.

Gotta go for the full blown 4 disc version on this. My wife demands it!

Me, too, if I don't nab it on Black Friday.

A catalog title on 'sale' for $35 is a big joke. I went to Target today just to see it for myself. No extras, this should be one of those $10-15 titles at regular price. It's really only worth what the Black Friday sale price is.

It's worth $20, $25 max, IMO, maybe $30 retail at the absolute most. But $40 retail/$35 1st-week "sale" price? Nope.

I figure a one disc WoO is $20 regular price at Wal-Mart, and that has a ton of extras. GWTW is also one disc but has no extras.

90-minute movie + lots of extras.
2-3/4-hour movie + only a commentary track for extras.

For the same price I'd rather have the high bitrate 3.75-hour movie on my one disc than a lot of extras at a sacrifice of video quality.

I was so irritated after going to Target today, I came home and ordered GWTW and Dances w/Wolves from Amazon.UK - both for 45.00 shipped S***w Target and their 35.00 single disc
post #111 of 296
Received my copy today.
I pre-ordered the UCE set from Amazon back in July.
As GWTW is one of my all time favorites, I've probably seen in a zillion times in my 60 years (ok, not a zillion, but a LOT).
The $45 price tag, for me, was well worth it. To me, some films are deserving of special presentations as far as packaging, extras, printed materials, etc. go, and this is one of those films.
This version is a triple dip for me. I also have it on VHS which I bought many years ago, also as a special collector's edition. Just two cassettes in a really nice presentation case.
I also have it on DVD, four discs, in a nice case.
So yeah, I REALLY love this movie. I just spent a few minutes watching the Blu Ray, skipping through some chapters just to see what the PQ is like.
All I can say is.................
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely outstanding. They did a GREAT job with this version.
I even tried watching it using the "wide zoom" mode on my display (Sony 46XBR4). The PQ on this disc is so good, I had to look hard to try and see any picture degradation using zoom. Yes, I usually watch a film in OAR, but this was just a test. In zoom, I really couldn't see any loss in quality.
Anyway, if you're a fan of GWTW, walk, don't run, and get this Blu Ray.

I have seen this in every theatrical print since the 1954 version (often thought to be the best Technicolor dye-transfer print), and also in the various video versions beginning with LD. So I have some ideas about what it should look like.

This is fantastic! The resolution is great, and the color palette is magnificent. Congratulations for excellent work.

So many rich colors (reds, greens, maroons) are provided here with marvellous color. Many scenes that have often seen a bit off to me in terms of color (example: the discussion between Scarlett and her father about Ashley near the beginning) are now excellent, and colors I never quite appreciated are now very much evident.

My only reservation concerns the details in the deep blacks. Technicolor was very good at showing details even in the inkiest blacks, and it is possible that the blacks have been crushed in the Blu-ray. I say "possible" because I think I have exceeded the quality of my projector with this disk (Infocus 7200, an older 720P DLP) and so I am not in a position to judge the blacks very well. If anyone has a JVC D-ILA or something as good with blacks, I would appreciate hearing about the blacks.

Another issue--which is really inherent in the film itself--is that a lot of the mattes do not look very good. Modern eyes are very discerning on this problem, although a poor transfer can accentuate such defects. A few scenes (e.g., the skyline of Atlanta) look a bit more fake than usual.

WRT the sound track: I have heard so many pseudo-stereo versions of this film that I don't know what to say about it. The mix is now mostly centered, with a few scenes presenting a stereo sound stage. It would be interesting to hear again the 4 track magnetic prints released in 1961 or the 6 track in 1968. [The 1968 70mm version sounded pretty good at the time but the color was terrible.] But the sound is very clean and natural if not stereophonic.

Overall, this is terrific version and the one that is likely to stand the test of time. Looking at the color and resolution, I simply do not think that further attempts to remaster it will prove very effective. We are there.

For those of you who wanted the UCE, I am glad they released it and also glad you liked it. Those of us who said we did not want the "box o'junk" know that it is not really junk. It's just some of us only want the movie with the special features disc, which is why I ordered it from Amazon.uk.

I did not want it because, like you, I already have several "special editions" of GWTW. As a new format comes along, the previous SE pales to me. Now that it is out on Blu, I'm no longer interested in the 2004 DVD SE, which was very cool in its day. When I bought The Searchers on HD DVD and then traded it in for the Blu, I lost interest in the beautiful 50th anniversary DVD box and gave it to my dad. After several UCEs of films on VHS, Laserdisc, DVD and now Blu-ray, I guess I just have UCE Fatigue. I'm all for Warner doing these limited edition numbered sets for the collectors who want them. I just don't see why they don't offer a region A version of the 2-disc set.

I'm sure we will go through this all over again with Ben-Hur.

I agree. I was initially derisive of the idea that they would be milking the fans with a 'box o' junk' edition, but they chose some good/interesting material to supplement the discs, and set it all off in a very striking case. The under $50 many of us are paying for it represents a huge score. I just got my shipping notice from WB, so I hope to have it by early next week.

Jack- I think I remember that deluxe VHS set. I thankfully never got the bug to collect VHS tapes, but I remember seeing the set in a Waldenbooks and thinking how nice it would be to make enough money to be able to splurge on something like that (iirc, it was $80-$100- in mid 80's currency and I was barely out of high school). I did eventually buy the 50th Anniversay LD set (which cost me more than this Bd set did) and was very happy/proud to finally own it on what was then the elite format. I also remember the later CAV release, but was surprised for the premium they charged, they didn't bother making it a very special package. From what I remember, the extra content was very slight.

To those who own the UCE box, is the casing the discs actually come in the same size as a digibook? I'd rather get this than the single-disc as it's only $10 more, but it would be very nice if I'd be able to take out the disc packaging and put it next to my others, and store the outer box elsewhere...

Yep, the included extras are VERY nice in this GWTW set.
I got my first VCR in 1980. When I got it, I swore the VCR was invented just for me!
I was buying VHS when they averaged about $80 a pop, and I built up a pretty large collection.
I've replaced a lot of them with DVD, HD-DVD and Blu Ray, but I still have a bunch.
One of the really nice sets I still have is The Godfather-The Complete Epic.
Three tapes, nice full size boolet, in a nice presentation case. It's the first two films re-edited in cronological order. My favorite way to watch them.
I have the trilogy on Blu Ray, but I wish they'd release the Epic version also.
Other UCE's I've bought are Wizard Of Oz (yeah, the crystal thing is silly, but the rest is nice), Forbidden Planet (HD-DVD in the metal case with the miniature Robbie the robot), the Planet Of The Apes set on Blu, Casablanca (HD-DVD, and then I also bought the Blu collectors's set, as I also love that movie).
What can I say; I'm a sucker for that stuff!

The "case" the discs are in is a tri-fold type. I'd say it's about 3/4 of an inch taller, about 1/4 of an inch deeper, and about the thickness of two Blu Ray cases, so it would work pretty well on a shelf next to your others.

Thanks for confirming that, I think I'll wait till closer to Christmas. Any chance somebody could take a pic of comparison? As long as it's not any taller than a DVD case that's fine with me.

I've ordered the UK version from Amazon UK and it isn't shipping with the rest of my order (a couple CDs, Woodstock BD). I think the first bunch already sold out. Expected to ship later next week, I think.
