If you're doing this mini reviews and recommendations, you should really tell us what is was that you didn't like about the story.

Ralph, I always enjoy the technical portion of your reviews. I wish you'd seen this one in the theater to compare the 4K theatrical presentation with the Blu-Ray.

Does the Blu-Ray contain a 3D version a la Hannah Montana (last year's concert movie not this year's HM)?
No 3D on this movie, although the image is damn near three-dimensional!
It should be better made in 3-D as in Dolby Digital 3-D theater.

Excellent review of another great animated feature from Pixar. I bought this title (largely based upon your review) and we watched it last night with some friends. It is films like this that makes me happy I'm into this hobby. Picture and sound were reference level and the story was one for all ages.

Glad to hear that you and your family enjoyed it RMK...

I enjoyed this Blu-ray and all the bonus features as well. Cine Explore was nice to see too. [Didn't see this listed in your breakdown of contents though]. I was also only a slight bit dismayed that there was no still production galleries at all. Though still quite a bit of material none the less.

Great review. I'm a huge fan of pixar so this looks like a "must have."

ust find that
Amazon has UP 4-disc Combo Pack + Monsters Inc + Cars on Blu-Ray for $36.47.

$62.47 - 26 dollars with coupon PIXARBLU making it 36.50
that sounds great.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned in this thread or another yet, but I wanted to post it just in case. Last night when I went to play Up again, as I clicked play, it asked, "The movie has previously been viewed, would you like to continued playback from the previous location" or at least something to that regard and asked me yes or no. I know this feature has been a complaint on Blu ray's and was just wondering if anyone else has noticed this on any other discs and if this will become a trend??? I haven't updated my Panasonic BD55 since I bought it, so I'm sure it wasn't a firmware update. Again sorry if this is old news, but I'm really excited to see it becoming a feature.

Greetings,

Josh, this feature has been around on Disney BD's for a while now and in my opinion is worth its weight in gold. There are many studios that include a bookmark option as well. Either works equally. I will be glad when all of the discs released offer the option of resuming where you left off.

Regards,

Ralph, thanks for such a quick reply. And I agree it is worth its weight in gold. I guess since the early blu ray discs came out and didn't have this option, I always just pressed stop after watching the film. I too, cannot wait until all studios have the resume playback option.

Bugs life does it also. An excellent feature I have to agree.

I completely enjoyed the LFE during the lightning scene.

What do you guys think of the calibration menu?

Just finished watching this film tonight. I found the story more appealing to the adults than the young ones. My daughter got bored quite easily but I loved it. Another great pixar film. Keep them coming!!

Finally got around to watching this one on BluRay (saw it in the theaters). This one is truly an amazing demo disc for how good a BluRay can look.
As for the movie, i really liked it when i saw it last summer....but watching it again, I honestly enjoyed the movie so much more. I found it to be funnier this time, and far more emotional. Just a fantastic movie, and certainly in my top 3 for 2009 so far

Film 4 out of 5, PQ 5 out of 5, SQ 5 out of 5. The picture and sounds were there with the best rated films, period.

Overall, I loved the movie. Loved the two main characters, Russell and Carl in this movie. Very good, character driven movie. Seeing the life of Carl was fantastic and very touching. I loved the pace and story in the first 2/3 of the movie.

I have to agree with one or two others who have mentioned that this movie fell apart somewhat in the last 1/2. For me, it was more like the last 1/3 or so. It just changed tone, pace and Charles Muntz (villian) didn't seem appropriate to act out in such the way he did. Sure he was frustrated at not finding the mysterious bird after all those years, but his actions just seemed too strong.(trying to kill Carl with a sword). I almost felt as though I was watching a different movie in the last act My $0.02. Overall it was still a very good story.

I found this movie geared towards adults than to kids and maybe tweeners. The first part of the movie had my wife crying and me a little sad. I was taken back by the shear drama of the wifes passing. It flew over(the story) my two younger sons head but my 6 year old kind of understands death since my father past last christmas. IT is a great movie but be ready to answer the death question to your kids. The PQ was also top notch. It was complete movie. Thanks for the review.

Wow! Great movie! Finally got around to watching this last night. Really enjoyed the experience and will watch this one quite a few more times I am sure. This one is definately geared more toward adults IMO which I enjoyed.

PQ was incredible and I could find nothing to complain about there.

AQ while tech great, just did not WOW me at any point and this is certainly the weakest Pixar film in terms of audio. Sure the house coming off the foundation sounded good, the lightning storm, the boulders falling over, but in general it just felt a bit weak for a Pixar film. From what I have read though, this sound design was deliberate to focus more on the characters/story (I guess they talk about this in the special features from what I have read), but I would have personally liked a bit more aggression similar to other Pixar films. Still very good though, just not fantastic.

All in all though, great buy and what a great film

Why does it take 15 minutes to load UP on Blu Ray?

I have a PS3 and put the Up blu ray in it. It didn't work the first 2 times, I cleaned the blu ray, then it warned me it may take up to 3 minutes to load. I waited 15 minutes with the screen loading. Then I restarted it again and it loaded a bit faster. All my other blu ray discs load fast, only UP loads forever. I thought Disney would have professionals making the blu rays.

What's the deal with that?

It loaded just fin in both my Oppo and PS3. No idea why it takes so long in your PS3.

Also: Great Movie! Pixar scores again.

Love Pixar movies, absolutely hated UP. Wife and I hated annoying characters and inane storyline. First Pixar movie we didn't enjoy. Glad others liked it.

My wife and I watched this last night for the first time because of your review Ralph.

Pixar just blows my mind every time when I watch one of their releases and the exceptional PQ and the great SQ on this release did it for me again.

The story was good but when it waned, Russell just had to say or do something and I was brought back in.

Thanks for sharing your impressions and I'm glad to hear that you both enjoyed it Bryan.

Another question about Aspect Ratio, here the "Deluxe Edition" DVD is stated as having an aspect ratio of 2.35:1.

http://www.amazon.com/UP-Two-Disc-De...2818800&sr=1-2

Does anyone know if the FOUR disc BluRay "Deluxe Edition" also has a super wide screen edition? Or do we have to watch it on DVD for that???

That is an error in the product specs. The aspect ratio of "Up" is 1.85:1.
