ATI Radeon + HDMI + Win7 = BSOD

Confounded by this issue on two builds...Intel and AMD based systems. Took a while hunting down what was causing the BSODs. Ran a myriad of memory and video tests with no issues till I started to notice a trend.

The BSOD usually happens during communication with the HDMI port. It can happen when coming out of screen blank mode (screensaver) or when switching an input on the TV...say from TV to HDMI (connected to the PC.)

So far the issue has presented itself with both the 10.0 Catalyst drivers and beta version 11b on ATI's developer site.

Anyone else seeing this issue and find a work around or stable driver?

Hardware:

Gigabyte motherboard (AMD and Intel)
Hauppauge 2250 tuner
ATI 4650 video card.

Software:

Windows 7 Mediacenter
Catalyst 10 and 11b.

By the way, I'm also getting considerably worse Desktop Aero Performance from the Intel system....3.9 vs. 5.5.

maybe related, I get BSOD with Vista + ATI drivers 9.9 and 9.10

no problems with older 9.8 drivers...happens during accelerated video playback for me.

Around the time of adding the HDMI cable, did you install any other software or hardware on your machine? Apologize if this is a newbie response, but thought I would ask.

Are you running Win7 RC1 or Win7 RTM? AFAIK the new drivers are only for Win 7 RTM.

Thanks for the replies. The systems are running the boxed release version of Win7 Home Premium. Both were fresh installs. I can't recall whether there might have been an update before the first BSOD, but MS has pushed a dozen updates to the machine.

Software installed is:

1. Hauppauge Win7 drivers
2. ATI Catalyst and drivers (catalyst install necessary to turn off overscan.)
3. Sissoft Sandra for hardware diagnosis
4. AVG Antivirus
5. Google Chrome and Picasa
6. Realtek latest sound card drivers
7. Updated ethernet drivers pushed from MS

That is all I can think of now.

Intel machine was initially hooked to TV with VGA cable and didn't experience any BSOD until moving to HDMI hookup...not sure if that was a coincidence timed to MS update. BSOD's are intermittent, not on all HDMI handshakes...but I will try putting it back to VGA to see if that fixes problem...also might try DVI to HDMI since I am pulling the sound out by optical toslink anyway.

Will also try 9.8 drivers from ATI...thanks.

not sure if it is the same thing but I was having the same issue, went through all the tests, returned components, wiped and reloaded everything (or at least tried), what fixed it for me was to update the motherboard Bios, I did that and now everything works great

Did that on the Intel system...plus updated the chipset drivers after calling Gigabyte. This was actually to try and fix performance issue with the video card. The ATI 4650 only scores a 3.5 Performance for Windows Aero, on the Intel box, while scoring a 5.1 on the AMD machine. Gigabyte tech told me to update bios and use Intel Vista chipset drivers (vs. chipset drivers installed with Win7.) BSOD's the same before and after those recommended updates and performance is just as bad. Interestingly, it is only this one score that is poor, the 3D score is on par with other machine.

One thing I did that got a BSOD with HDMI was use a HDMI adapter that wasn't the original ATI supplied one.

I had a friend that wanted to hook up thier PC to thier TV via HDMI but he didn't have the adapter. I happened to have a DVI to HDMI adapter but wasn't sure what card it was from (possibly a 9600GT, but hooking to a ATI card). I just figured at worst I would have to run a seperate audio cable.

The moment I plugged it in and tried to boot it would BSOD every time. So I hooked it up to a monitor via the HD15 connection (but the DVI to HDMI adapter still in place but not hooked to an HDMI cable) and again it kept BSOD every time. Once I removed the HDMI adapter it booted perfectly every time. As soon as I put it back on it would fail.

So, I would check the adapter and if you know anyone that has the official one and has it working see if you can borrow it.

The 4650 has HDMI out so I haven't had to resort to a DVI adapter (but might try one to see if it works better.)

Since it seems to happen during HDMI handshakes I'm thinking these solutions posted in this forum (that avoid the handshake) might work.
