Star Trek (Blu-ray) Official AVSForum Review - Page 2

I watched this movie the other night and it comes with some caveats which Ralph has alluded to. The subsonics do not occur as often as in Transformers Cloverfield, Max Payne to mention a few. They do occur and when they do it sounds great. I did not come away from this BD release with the same enthusiasm as others have. My system would compare to Ralph's as we both have Anthem systems with ARC. My sub is a Servo 15. I would give it a 4.5 only because it doesn't match the punch of other action flicks IMHO. The picture on the other hand is fantastic, reference all the way

Hi Ralph,
I enjoyed reading your review, the audio is great on this movie, with a very high quality audio system it is sublime. These large budget movies have great time and money spent on visuals and audio,(far better than cd quality, and no compression). The bass that people often complain about, should not concern them if they only have 1 or 2 subs.(audio mix for black hawk down by todd AO use 22 large Bag End subs to mix 7hz,and 18hz drones in scenes).
Thankyou for the very well written review, one that I take notice Ralph.
Regards Victor.

Nice stuff... but 2 questions:

1. Where are the acoustical treatments. The room looks small and very reflective.

2. Reference amps and speakers for sure... why the Denon 3805? Nice piece but 1/10th the price of any other piece in your system.

A Bug's Life 98 - Star Trek 97? Dolby TrueHD 5.1 100?

Hi Thebland,
Upgrading to projector and large screen, then yes will get pro,s in for acoustical treatments.
I have 2 systems,main ref system is analog out(new player on the way)into 3 pre amps.Bat VK-5 LEFT,RIGHT,copland cva-306,centre,rear left,rear right,Proceed AVP for sub channel only(bluray and surround for tv viewing).
Then to power amps ref 600mkIII front left, right,Krell Theatre Amplifier Standard, mono for centre only,Bat Vk-500 for rears, and 4 baby subs.
The denon is in downstairs system which anyone can use and is ok.Only 3 buttons to turn system on.
You guys in the usa are lucky we pay 2 to 3 times US $ on Hi end components A$.
Regards Victor.

is this the movie to finally get me to upgrade my receiver to be able to decode the latest codecs????? the choices....

This is an excellent detailed review. I may just have to blind buy this one as I have heard great things about it. I wish they would have put a DTS HD track on the disc though as Paramount did with G.I. Joe and Transformers 2.

After reading all the reviews here and seeing it in theatres....

Collect!!

Definitely can't wait to get my copy.

Just curious but is this the first Blu Ray movie with an audio score of 100?
Day and date buy regardless of the price. Thanks for the review!
I'm anxious to get this one. How do you get them so early?! Not fair!
I'm not surprised by the 100 for the audio score. I was extremely impressed seeing this in a digital theater. I swear I heard everything onscreen and off. The first thing I was thinking after leaving the theater was how kick-ass a BD this will make.

I can't wait till next Tuesday!

I knew it was going to be awesome on BR!!...I hope I can finish my new theater by next week for a Saturday night opening show. Thanks for the added push and great review!.

Regarding the story line of the new ST film. Understand it was needed to introduce the new franchise cast, weave in the original ST elements while presenting an entertaining film. In my opinion JJ Abrams did an excellent job in accomplishing all these goals.
I would suggest that -
a) comparing TV productions with their limited budgets and production time versus features with their bigger budgets and longer production schedules is like comparing the preverbal apples and oranges.
b) comparing 1960 effects to digital 2007 effects is the same as "a" above. (Even 1980/90 effects are not comparable to current state of the art.)
c) creatively TV and features are targeted differently in scope and content.
d) productions should be considered on their own given the technology of the time and media they were intended for.

I would further suggest that that the principle question in all cases is - was the production entertaining and did you enjoy watching it.

Having been a production executive on ST II, ST III, TNG, DS9, Voyager, I assure you that given the restrictions dictated for the particular production everyone involved worked diligently to make the best picture possible for the audience to enjoy be it for TV or movie theater.

Thanks for the insight and perspective. I think the film is extremely well done and brings in an entire new audience to the Trek universe.

Does this come with a slip cover at all?

Yes

Hi Ralph,

I think my theory has come true with respect to Paramount. If you recall a post I had in another thread, I mentioned my theory that Paramount didn't release review copies of Transformers 2 and GI Joe because they knew they would get "ripped to shreds" by the reviewers...but released the review copy of Star Trek because they knew it was a solid movie.

This may be a new tactic of Paramount's marketing team....avoid bad reviews to ensure high sales of "mediocre" films, and provide review copies of strong films to enhance sales...

Just my $0.02....

No. There have been about 3 or 4 now as I remember.

Tick, tick, tick.

The wait is agonizing for a great movie with excellent BD quality. Well at least we have some other goodies as well for November to hold us over while we wait.

I'm interested in seeing how many early morning buyers will be at my local store when it opens. A midnight purchase? Nope cause I'll end up losing sleep!
I did not get a chance to see this in the theater and have been patiently waiting for the Blu-Ray release. Cannot wait, and Ralph's review just makes me want to watch it even more.

Ralph -

Great review, preordered this from Amazon when first available. And I'm patiently (barely!) waiting for it's arrival next week!

I can not wait to watch - and listen to - this movie again! I saw it right after it first came out at the most comfortable (and $$) movie theater I've ever been to...
