I think that WD should say that they made a bad choice of hardware in WDTV1 and offer a discount to the WDTV 2 gen for the early adopters... since we helped WD to develop their new players... that would be nice regarding the mess they did with the firmware developement!

The thing is... i will not buy any new player from them... since that ION platforms are getting cheaper and cheaper! Who need appliances when you can have XBMC on a cheap ION?

i'm not quite sure what country you are from, but here in the states we are generally more accepting of the concept of product obsolescence and upgrades due to easing of marketing factors such as component parts. why would you expect wildly unfair discounts and above-and-beyond service from WD regarding their product when you reasonably wouldn't expect the same thing from other corporations that do yearly upgrades to their products (such as every other electronics company (sony, et al))? your concept of creating discounts/trade-ins traditionally stems from a user-generated aftermarket resale value, which inexpensive (yes, the WDTV is very inexpensive) items traditionally do not have as it is expected that they are obsolete and replaced by a newer iteration annually that is equally affordable, thus making the older version harder to sell.

i think that you are either 1.) unfairly biased/harsh towards WD, 2.) extremely volatile as a poster, 3.) borderline childishly demanding, and 4.) woefully ignorant of how the real world works if you are serious about these ridiculous demands. this is not a personal attack as i do not know you, but this has been something that i have observed both now and in your posting habits of the past.

So no LAN and no component out. What else is missing and what's its price tag?

Pricing on the net seems odd.

Here you see the Gen 2 WD TV for $129.99:

http://www.staples.com/Western-Digit...?cmArea=SEARCH

If you go to Best Buy then you'll find the WD TV Live for $119.99.

I guess we'll have to wait for prices to settle down once these units make it to all markets.

0711Sale,

Can you comment on the quality of the picture? Any difference between Gen1 and Gen2?

Thanks

My opinion is that the picture is better.I have SONY Bravia 37'' 720p and with color depth 8 bit on the WD unit the picture is sharper and also the black color that was problem on the old model is gone.

This model seems to be aimed at people who don't need networking, and want to put audio out to their HD TVs (downmix to stereo), plus some tweaking in the PQ.

Hardware wise there is nothing to prevent WD to use HDMI 1.3 and a little bit of more memory last year so they don't even need to release so called WDTV gen2 this year just because 8655vs8635. I would say it was a bad choice hardware wise for WD last year although I am not complaining my WDTV since I know what I am buying. Maybe WD did it intentionally so you need to buy another one this year.

Also, I read on WDTVforum that the WDTV Gen2 has file management (copy/delete). Can you verify this?

I wrote before that the unit has file management section (copy, delete, move, select all). Also I tested iso files with dvd menu and chapters and the unit plays movie but don't support the menus and chapters like the old unit.

Thank you WD, for introducing me to the World of Media Players. Gotta say the Original WDTV was certainly fun and continues to serve me well. I, however, have now moved on to a full-blown HTPC and am quite happy with the combo of W7MC, My Movies3, Media Browser, and ATI DXVA compliant movies. The WDTV has been relegated to use by the kids while the HTPC is in the media room.

Now my 2 cents on the new unit and my feelings about it...

I'm not upset about this new unit, however, I am disappointed with the level of support given to the original WDTV. More could have been done with this unit and it seems as though it was put out to pasture and given a token effort early in the game. I understand that there were/are design limitations, however, there was more that could have been done as is exhibited by the B-RAD firmware enhancements. I just can't help but feel let down and abandoned and rightfully or wrongfully, it is a perception that many have. In the world of customer service -- perception is reality.

Would I recommend WD to a friend?? I really cannot say I would with so many other good players / streamers out there now. I can say that my previous recommendations of the WDTV were more a result of B-RAD firmware enhancements than the actual WDTV. If it were not for B-RAD and LaurentG, my recommendations would most likely have gone to another device. Pretty sad when 3rd party individuals add more features and value to a product than the MFG and with no vested interest other than goodwill.

I guess we were the pioneers and you know what they say about pioneers -- they are the guys lying face-down in the dirt with arrows in their back. OK -- maybe not quite that bad.

@0711sale

The feature list on staples.com has:
- DVD-like menu

Any idea what that is refering to?

TIA.
Proabably just ad copy from someone who is clueless.
The WD line doesn't handle DVD menus
i think that they are referring to the WDTV's general navigation interface, not a feature set specific to files. still, poorly worded.
Have you tried connecting a USB hub yet? I know, it's not likely. But the original wasn't supposed to support it either, so I figue it's worth a shot!

So which one is better? WDBABG0000NBK-EESN or WDBABF0000NBK-NESN They seem pretty much the same o_O?
I think one is euro and the other is for US.

One of the pics in an earlier post showed showed a sticker on the chip that said PAL.

Ah, so its best to get the one with DTS wicked! The live one is a little too expensive @_@ Dont think ill ever use the Youtube stuff

@ 0711sale - did you try this?

The WD gen2 firmware has now been put on the WD site:

Hi!
Can anyone who has this device post a photo of its back, please? Is it true that it doesn't have a component video out?
Thanks!

Did you ever try any of B-rad's custom firmware on your WDTV? I just ordered one of these (WDTV 2nd gen) and would like to use custom firmware

Yes I did but the unit don't recognize them. Then I made contact with B-rad and he told me that it is a hole new thing to do even it is the same board. He must have one of this unit to do the modifications and he don't wan't to buy it himself.
