DVD - Software Required for Upscaling?

Im putting together an entry-level system and I'm wondering about the Blu-ray player.

Do I need software like Cyberlink Power DVD or Arcsoft TotalMedia Theater to upscale DVDs to 720p/1080i? If so, would I be better off (cost) getting a component Blu-ray player from Costco or Best Buy?

Re bluray - yes. you need some kind of propriety playback software to decode bluray.

You 'can' decode with h.264 codec+anydvdhd, but there will be issues with subtitles and sound channel selection.

Re upscaling - no. You can use ffdshow to upscale dvd's. ffdshow is free.

W7 upscales regular DVD's natively, no external upscaler required.
