Point Grey and Fresco Logic Unveil World's First USB 3.0 High Definition Digital Video Camera.
http://www.ptgrey.com/news/pressrele...?articleID=266

"uses the new 3 megapixel (MP) Sony IMX036 CMOS image sensor, which features high sensitivity, superior color fidelity, low power, and no smear. The sensor also supports an HD 1080p60 mode, which allows the camera to output raw, uncompressed 1920 x 1080 pixel images at 60 frames per second (FPS). Point Grey's own software driver provides low-level control of the camera via the USB 3.0 bus."

Sure, this particular camera would not suit us, but I posted this to announce:

the arrival or USB 3 (4.8Gb/s max) as compared to USB 2 practical limit of 350Mb/s (barely blu-ray).

and the coming of uncompressed video cameras.

The little camera in this article may have 1920 x 1080 x 3colours x 8 bit x 60 = 2985984000 bits per second = 2986Mb/s = 373MB/s data rate.

Food for thought. Several USB3 motherboards have already been announced, and a few other USB3 devices.

Technology marches on. When will we see a RAW handy cam ?

USB 2.0 is 480MB/s iirc. Although problematic if shared (USB Mouse / USB keyboard / ???) as the practical bus speed is lower.

I didn't realize that 3.0 would be that much faster. Although 1GB ethernet is a reality now. Versus 10MB / 100MB. So why not. It's been talked about for ages, glad to see that it might actually exist now.

I don't know if RAW would be any benefit on small sensor, cheap optics, and other consumer land aspects. But it would be nice. HV30 gives you that option (sort of now with it's HDMI output). Although not many practical applications of it, if you need to be tethered to a PC to use it. My man cave, while interesting, is not so interesting from a video perspective.

Here's a recent article (September) that ran on PC World in regards to USB 3.0 . You may find it interesting. It outlines the 'next gen' USB capabilities.

USB2 is theoretically 480M bits per second (Mb/s) (=60MB/s) but the practical limit is around 350Mb/s (= 43.5MB/s) (some thing to do with the limitation of send / receive on the one bus).
USB3 is 4.7Gb/s and several mother boards and other products have already been announced (in time for xMas ??).
