The EX470 and EX495 can hold the same amount of storage space including external drives etc.. correct?

Newegg informed me they will be getting more EX47X series in.

If Newegg has a deal for $229 on the 470 again that would be great. Server and PCH for under $500. Plus BD drive for ripping and Any DVD HD software would still all be cheaper then buying the EX495. Think I might be set if I go that route.

What you guys think?

These prices are really good for the EX47x series. I paid over $500 for mine a year ago and now they already have a 3rd generation?

If anyone gets the 47x series and plans on upgrading the CPU, I have an unopened retail LE-1620 CPU. When I did my upgrade of my EX47x series I bought this from Newegg because they didn't hav ethe LE-1640 instock. but the next day they got the LE-1640 instock so I ordered that one and replaced the stock CPU. So I never did anything with the retail, unopened LE-1620.
If anyone is interested in buying it just PM me.
I had completely forgot about it until I read this thread.

I just got a EX470.. I was going to go with the EX495 but dbone1026 offered me a EX470 for a price I couldn't refuse. It should be here Friday! I got 2 1.5TB drives waiting to be installed and just picked up a LG BD/HD-DVD drive, PCH A-110 and AnyDVD HD.. Hopefully I'll be streaming a few movies Friday night

The EX470 should last me through the next year or so. I want to see what HP releases in 2010 for there servers. If its something worth upgrading I will or I'll upgrade to a EX495 since prices should drop in a year.

hahahahaha.. I can't wait for the weekend! It feels like its taking forever for Friday to come! I got everything I need for the server sitting in boxes just waiting for the arrival for the EX470!

I've ripped a few DVD's so when I get the server tomorrow I can hook everything up and test out the A-110.

Should I install YAMJ first before I start adding movies to the server?

Avoid YAMJ for now, plus you would install YAMJ on your WHS which you don't have yet. The goal is just to get WHS humming along, get some dvds saved there, and then test out playback on the PCH just using basic SMB streaming. Once you can confirm that everything is working you can then look to spice things up (talking UI here, making sure the Tiger reference doesn't have you thinking otherwise!!!).

I will let you know when I get everything setup. Im sure I'll have lots of questions to bug you with

Something I recommend for everyone who has an MSS since it is headless is to install a program like LogMeIn so in case for whatever reason you are unable to RDP you should still be able to log in via LogMeIn.. I actually use LogMeIn on all my PCs and Servers.

I received my HP EX495 server yesterday

still trying to get everything to work: I think I worked out most of the issues: you need to spend some time with all the settings

Great news. Any questions don't hesitate to ask. I just finished setting up my dad with the EX495 + TR5M a few weeks ago. It went very smooth, but it did help being an EX470 owner for over a year

I am doing pretty well so far

only issue it shows: HP Media Server: please update the client software

...please uninstall the client software and reinstall it from the server

I did that: entering the port address of the server: it uninstalled & reinstalled the software:and it fixed an issue but I still get the warning in Network Health: I checked the box to ignore the issue.

WHat O/S on the PC that you get the error (XP/Vista/W7)? You should be running with PP3 which might be the update suggested

Do you do all your updates on the EX495? In the WHS Console are you running PP3 (settings, resources tab). The version should also be 6.0.2423.0. Also, if you go into your Add/Remove Programs in the control panel, do you see the Windows Home Server Connector, if everything is updated the date should be 11/24/09 and version 6.0.2423.0. As long as these match up you should be fine. PP3 was just pushed through recently which meant the client pc needed to have the connector software updated as well

Good sign, then your client software should be up to date with your WHS. The PP3 update gave some weird errors to a bunch of users.

I haven't messed too much with FLAC. I know the MyMovies WHS addin has a Music Ripper that will rip music cds directly to your server in FLAC format, never tried the function though

Are you using the free version of LogMeIn?

Yeah, when you sign upi you automatically get LogMeIn pro for I think 30 days, and when the trial expires it goes back to LogMeIn free. I use it to manage all my HTPCs remotely, and have it installed on family pcs so I can be their geek squad...

coming from a Linksys Media Hub the HP is a bit daunting to me: I am a network novice but I like it so far

I have 40 devices on my network: many are RTI Touchpanels throughout the house: everything works well. The T panels can be programmed and updated over the network [and remotes by 802b]

main purpose of the server is to archive my CD collection share photo files

My EX470 just got here. Should be up and running tonight!

Maybe someone here can help me out. I purchased the 470 ($200) about a year ago when circuit city closed down, I don't know anything about how these mediaservers (WHS) work.

Can someone please put into simple terms what exactly I can do with this? Would I still need to purchase something like WD TV Live to stream media? What is the most effective way of making the most of the HP Medaiserver?

Thanks in advance

I'm using my EX470 to store ripped Blu-Ray,HD-DVD and DVD files. Then using Popcorn Hour A-110 to stream those ripped files to my projector.

The EX470 can be uses for data storage, computer backups, streaming, remote acess, etc... It has a duplication feature which if turned on helps to protect your data in the event of a hdd failure.

What most people do (and I think Chris mentioned this) is to store all their media on the EX470 and then stream to a media player connected to a tv (such as the PCH A11).
