Exactly why I bought an Xbox HDDVD drive as a spare. Also useful when using a second computer to convert HDDVD. Two computers convert twice as many videos at the same time.

When I put in the new drive and ran the disk management it showed the other 3 drives at 99% filled and the new drive at 0%.

I'm now getting critical warnings that I am running out disk space and that I only have 1 drive with available space and to add another drive. How do I get the storage pool to start spreading out my files? Not sure how to resolve this critical error.

The majority of my data are MKVs at about 80% and the rest of photos and music.
Did you add the new disk to your storage pool? That is fine that 0 percent is showing as any new data would be added to the new drive. Also, what are t he size of your drives, that could be the issue I have a feeling

Is there a way to telnet into the 490 ?
If so what are the telnet arguments to do so.

I have used telnet to log into my PBO media server and issue linux commands so the procedure does work.

Or is RDT the only way.

FWIW this post may be of use to posters here.

Fry has a Samsung 2 TB HD204 on sale for ~ $90 and I picked one up.
Surprisingly the HP EX490 would not recognize this drive.
Allocating this HDD and formatting in Win 7 made no difference.

Downloaded a HD diagnostic utility from Samsunghdd.com, found this only runs in DOS. Fortunately my main desktop mutiboots to many OS's including DOS and I was able to run the Samsung estool.exe utility from a floppy disc and changed the default sata 300 to sata 150. This was the solution and the EX490 now recognizes the Samsung.
Is this a known problem with the 490?, and why did this not happen with a 2 TB WDC WD20EADS I added a week ago.

While in the utility I changed AAM from disabled to fast but not sure if this was a smart move. The choices were fast, medium, slow and disabled.

I only use the WD green drives with my MSS and have never had an issue like that with the 28 I'm using with my ex490

That drive is an advanced format drive, which is made for x64 systems. The EADS is not an AF drive, which is why it plays nice with WHS. I actually purchased that Samsung Spinpoint, my WHS recognized it without issue and transfer speeds were at the expected rate. However, it basically caused havoc on my WHS to the point where it was clogging up my logs and shutting my WHS down once a week. Once I removed the drive the problem went away.

The common WD advanced format drive is the EARS. The way to get it to work with WHS is to set the jumper pin to 7/8. I just prefer to avoid the AF drives altogether for now if possible (just picked up 2 2TB Seagate LP drives for $69 each)

Thanks, Did not know the Samsung was an advanced format drive although the Samsung specs showed it as AFT but the significance of that escaped me.

Two choices, clone my Hitachi 2 TB (with 1.8 TB of rips) to the Samsung and install the Hitachi in the 490 or return it and get another WD EADS. Fry's has these as re-certified for the same price and allready have one of these installed in the 490, working fine.

What would you suggest ?

Well, based on my experience with the Samsung FE4 drive in my WHS I would not recommend it and would instead recommend the EADS drive (I have about 10 of them without issue). Some people have had no issues with the FE4 drive but in my case it was clearly the issue.

Here is something weird. In my WHS I have about 21TB worth of drive space, and 4.2TB of that is free. I want to remove one of my 1TB drives to replace with a 2TB drive, yet WHS is telling me I don't have enough space t o do this (which based on my drive stats makes no sense).

Thanks again damian and I will return the Samsung and get the WD EADS instead.

Weird indeed, I just removed the Samsung drive, took about 2 minutes.
WHS 2003 has its problems does it not.

Note to self, must turn demigrator back on to remove a drive

Damien, if I may impose on you again, although I have more then 50+ years experience with computers I am a total newbie when it comes to WHS and the EX 490.
How would I install and invoke these (or equivalent) routines:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...postcount=1941.

With rdt ?, Remote access has not worked for me but rdt does.
A link to a procedure or guide would be fine fine.

BTW, started programming solutions to engineering problems in the mid sixties using Fortran IV using a Decwriter connected to an IBM 704 via timeshare. Yes, I am that old.

PS. While writing this I am streaming the 'Battle of Britain" BR from the 490 to a PBO (Patriot Box Office) media server. CPU maxing at ~10%. The 490 does work well !

Funny, I actually just set up those exact BAT files two days ago. shut off demigrator at 12pm and turn it back on at 12am.

All you need to do is RDP into your EX490, create the two BAT files (I use Notepad++) and then in schedule tasks set up two tasks (one to run the off bat at the designated time and one to run the on bat at designated time)

SO far it has taken over 4 hours to remove a 1TB drive, probably have about an hour left (your time will vary depending on how much data is on the drive you are removing)
That sounds like a very long time to just remove a 1TB drive. I don't remember the process taking that long. But it has been awhile since I've removed a drive. I had planned on replacing the rest of my 1.5TB drives with 2TB one but never got around to ordering any around thanksgiving. Those prices mentioned are excellent for 2TB drives. The last ones I bought around $140 during the holidays last year.

Well, the drive was completely full, although this one does seem to be going a little slower then in the past. Assuming that all data on that drive is duplicated elsewhere (which should be the case) WHS should really just be looking for the duplicated files and moving them onto other drive(s).

Yeah, prices were too good to pass up. I will swap in the 2TB drive tonight (when the 1TB drive finishes doing its thing) and then maybe next weekend do the same for the second drive I purchased

Doing some research on AFT HDD and found a lot. This one is useful:
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/sto...t-hard-disks/1

Among other tidbits

Quote:

Windows XP (and Windows 2000 and Server 2003) use a method of accessing the hard disk that starts at sector 63. Because 4KB sectors match eight 512B sectors, sector 63 is unfortunately is one sector shy of being directly compatible, so using a 4KB data sector with these OSes causes mis-aligned writes.

and

Quote:

We asked about JBOD setups, and Western Digital claimed these only require the jumper workaround, as the whole drive is used as a single partition. That's good to know for the many people looking to upgrade Windows Home Servers (based on Windows Server 2003) with increasingly larger drives in the future

Unlike the WD EARS the Samsung 2 TB AFT (to be returned) does not have instructions for a jumper that advances the LBA address by 1.

Based on the link quoted above, there is no advantage in usingt AFT disks in the HP Mediasmart running WHS 2003 and is likely to cause the kind of problems Damian reported.

Note: there are nice read/write benchmarks towards the end of the article.

Excellent article for explaining. That is where some of my initial confusion came from as I had read about setting the jumpers to 7/8 on the EARS drives and assumed that it would also apply to the Samsung FE4 drives (which of course it did not apply). I did not notice any performance issues with the Samsung FE4 with read/write speeds. The issue primarily encountered, one of the processes that WHS does (I believe it is for analyzing each drive) generates a logfile (if I recall correctly it was called qs). This log was typically around 1kb each day. After I installed the FE4 drive the process/log appears to get caught in a revolving error loop which would cause a log of approx 700MB a day! So each day I would have a new 700MB log generated with all kinds of errors, and within a week the log would eat up all free space on my O/S drive, eventually leading my system to crash. Removing the drive set the log back to its 1kb size, and my WHS has been humming along ever since.

Careful with the new Samsung F4 drive...

http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/sma...gF4EGBadBlocks

and a performance comparison with unRAID (EARS vs. F4)

No jumper or adjustment can be made with the F4 to align properly. The misalignment performance hit showed up in the random read/writes.

Yeah, it was just some quick tests I ran, but as I mentioned I pulled the FE4 out a while ago as it caused a lot of issues with WHS. I will definitely be staying far way from these drives!!!

Hey guys,
i have the old ex470 and it's choking on streaming Bluray mkv. I first had to install Haneswin NFS before I could even stream. However, if any process starts taking cpu resources, the movies start to skip and stutter. I have "turned off" demigrator which helped tremendously, but it still happens to point that I get frustrated and have to turn the movie off. So with that spill, what processor is everyone successfully been able to upgrade to currently?

Newegg. Deal is no longer available though, so back at $99.99. When the deal was active I think it was a limit of 2 per customer so I purchased 2. One just went in my WHS last night, will put the other one in this weekend

Even $99 is a good price for a 2TB drive. My first 1TB drives were around $275 and i had to crack open an external USB case to access them. It's amazing how cheap storage is now.

That's nothing. Friends and I bought 1GB (yes that's 1 GIGABYTE) hard drives when they became available around 91 or 92. We spent something like $350 for the drive.

When I was a college freshman our $3000 IBM workstations for engineering school were equipped with 20 MB (yes MEGAbyte) hard disks and all of the guys in the classes ahead of us were pissed because their machines only had floppy drives.

Returned the Samsung AFT drive and bought a factory re-certified 2 TB EADS at Fry. They have 52 (now 51) in stock at $99. The boxed price at Fry is $159. My EX490 is now fully loaded.

I've still got my old IBM with floppy from 1984 that they required us to buy at school back then.
I have no idea why I still keep it buried in my closet. It was the so called portable version and weighed 30 or 40 pounds with a small amber screen.

I think my parents still have that luggable/portable!
