HP MediaSmart Server? - Page 4

Congratulations Chris! How do you like it so far?
I have the 470 also and love mine streaming to all my xbmc boxes. 4 1TB drives over half full right now, probably going to go for an E-Sata box to expand the HP pretty soon.

Man that is a sharp looking EX470!!! Bay 3 and 4 look real lonely though...

About a month or so ago I sent a private message to dbone about a couple hard drive deals I thought he may want to post over on the mediasmartserver forum he mods at.
He mentioned in one of the PM's that he upgraded to a self built and had a 470 he was probably going to get rid of. I came within an inch of shooting him an offer for it so I could give it to my brother as a xmas gift. (or even keep as a second for myself)

I just purchased an EX490 off ebay. I plan on replacing the single core 2.2Ghz celeron with a 2.8Ghz dual core Pentium(E6300).
Has anyone done the upgrade with the EX490?
I have an EX470 that I upgraded to a 2.6Ghz single core Athlon. The procedure was pretty straight forward. Hopefully it is the same for the EX490.

I figured the EX495 was a big premium over the EX490. And I already have too many 1TB and 1.5TB drives around. So for only $80 for the E6300 I figured it was a good deal.

I just wish I had purchased a 5bay eSata enclosure for the port multiplier when Newegg had them on sale. I'll have to keep using my 4 bay eSata enclosure.

McAfee total protection is installed on my HP 495 server and I got a warning that the DAT files are out of date so I purchased a subscription to it: I can go into my account and it confirms the purchase

It says it will automatically update the server and not to reinstall McAfee

However when I try to update the software, it says 'invalid entitlement

any ideas?

No idea. i paid for it on my EX470 but never had an issue like that. I ended up uninstalling it a few weeks ago since I wanted to try out diskkeeper. Running both of those was too much for my single core athlon and my transfer rates dropped below 300mbs. That's why I decided to get the EX490 and put a dual core in it.
Once I set it up I'll put Mcafee back on it.

And now that I think about it, the trial subscription for the EX470 lasted several months and when I had the trial, it worked the same as after I bought it. It would update the DAT files on a regular basis.

I would actually recommend Avast, I use that in place of McAfee

called McAfee support and got it resolved: for anyone else who bought McAfee Total Protection and cannot activate it:

go into Home Server settings/ add ins/ installed

Uninstall McAfee Total Protection/ reconnect to server

go back to add ins / available: install McAfee TP

go to McAfee tab and wait for an activate now icon to appear

when it asks for an activation account number, go to MaAfee tab, launch security center/ my account/ Account enrollment key: write it down and type it in/ reconnect: that should do it

McAfee technical support ( in India) is top notch

So you just want to copy your FLAC files over? If so you can either connect directly to the HP server via USB, rdp into your MSS, open up Windows Explorer, and copy over to your shared folder. Other option would be to do this from a PC that is connected to both the music server and MSS, open up the shared folders and copy.

I want to do it direct via USB without using the PC

OK, so you should be able to connect the USB directly to your MSS, RDP in to your MSS and copy via windows explorer (Make sure you ignore any messages from the WHS console about adding the music server to the pool)

So the EX470 itself cannot stream media to the TV and would require something like PH or WDTVLive to grab media from the EX470, in that case what makes it any different from a PC with network shared drives or usb drives connected to Media player?

Correct, the MSS is not meant to be connected directly to a TV. You are corrent that you could just have a PC connected directly to the tv with network shared drives. The MSS runs WHS whch is different then say an HTPC running W7. For one, with WHS you can add multiple drives and it will all be viewed as one big pooled drive. With W7 every drive you add is its own drive, so you need to add separately. Also, if a drive fails you lose data. With WHS you get data redundancy with its duplication feature. You would need to have your PC running some form of RAID if you want to get the same type of feature, and RAID would not apply to any external USB attached enclosures. Hope that makes sense, feel free to ask any more questions.

I got my upgrade to my EX490 done yesterday. I installed 4GB of 5-5-5-15 DDR2 800 memory and a 2.8Ghz dual core Pentium(E6300 Wolfdale). So far the idle temps are 35C and under full load doing video conversion temps have gone up to 64C.

So far everything seems fine. I transfered 120GB as a test to the main 1TB drive and it did so without any issues. I just added four 1.5TB drives to the port multiplier to make sure that works fine. I'll do another 120GB test on those tonight. Right now I'm doing a small 25GB test transfer to it.
I seem to be avergaing around 370mbs transfer rates (520mbs peaks) to the MSS. Is that typical for the EX49X series or should it be faster?

Transfer rates seem fine. Other factors such as network setup, hard drives, etc... will affect transfer speeds as well. Your speeds are very similar to what I get with my dual core WHS (I average around 30/40MB/s, with bursts up to 70/80MB/s)

Firewall question

I keep getting firewall notices that seem to conflict: the HP server wants the Windows firewall turned on: McAfee then warns its firewall is not turned on

It seems Windows does not know the McAfee firewall is on and vice versa

What is the proper setup? I know both firewalls should not be turned on
