Trt tacb-2009

This box does indeed have the front display, dim but real.
It is all black, metal case, with louvers (not vents) top and bottom.
It has a 7 day epg, S-video and a good remote.

It doesn't seem quite as sensitive as the Channelmaster.
The only thing I don't like so far is the lack of the Zoom 1 like the CM.
It has three settings with one being like Zoom 2.
The picture looks very good, but seems to have hotter color, so that may be altering my impression.

I ordered with coupons.

They may modify the box now that the limitations are gone.
Everyone should list their desired features for a new hidef or lodef box.
I would suggest a timer setup with manual clock, multiple remote codes and of course, a full set of outputs.
And a zoom with less cropping.

There is a timer with 8 settings.
The person I talked to at the factory was unaware of it.


The original sheets show a 14 day EPG.
The box says 7 day EPG.

The photo is correct except the box is black.
The 'cable in' is labeled as 'analog' in.
The manual says to use it for cable or vcr.

The menu offers digital audio feed out, but it is disabled.
The manual lists LPCM out or RAW DATA out.
You can not switch to DATA.
QAM may be the same.
Maybe these can be updated, if the hardware is in place?

The manual lists 8 favorites groups.

The TRT sheet linked above is the same in the manual except for a few items.
The manual lists 43 buttons on the remote.
There are 42 and an LED that lights up on use.
Weight is 1.3 kg.
Smart antenna is listed with 12VDC max 300 ma.
Power is max 6.5 W
With smart antenna max 10 W.

I think the OSD settings only control the onscreen display.

The manual is 60 pages, so it will take me some time to go through all this.

The box has been on for a day and runs very cool.
I have it setting on top of my GoVideo SVHS vcr, a version of the JVC tilting head 9000 series.
I am testing with the vcr on full edit (raw) and using the buffer.
I can try some different settings to see if it makes a difference.
I am running through the S-video and the rca video input.
S-video is much better.
The set is a 19" piece of crap, as I don't have access to the monitors now.
It is set on full sharpness.

I have loaned one box to the engineers at a local station and they will be testing it and offering opinions too.

Through the menu rather than the direct audio button, you can switch to RAW DATA OUT, but I still get audio after a pause, so I doubt it is sending digital.
It offers the option of RF Power On/Off.

The manual lists an 8 day EPG and it will go back a few hours too, depending on station support.
Very useful.

I find a lot of remote interference from the Channelmaster remote.
Oddly I can't get the TRT remote to trigger anything on the Channelmaster.

Information for programming universal remotes.
This unit follows the codes of Zenith cable boxes.

This RCU uses the so-called NEC-format for the IR codes.
The transmitted code is combined from a user code and a function code.
The user code is 2 bytes long and the same for all functions of the remote control.
The user code of this remote is F708 hex.
There is a chart with codes for all buttons.

I have a 970 and a 950 so I can dig one out and compare.
But my impression is that this one is superior to the Zinwell.
I just ordered another Zinwell today, and I'm sorry now that I found the timer functions on this one.
I do think that certain software and menus are bought and sold between designers, maybe along with certain hardware.

I can get the EPG display to go forward 16 days past today.
It will go backwards equally, though I don't know if it will ever process ahead that far.
It doesn't seem to buffer EPG data well or process it quickly.
I can get two days ahead without too much delay.
Even though it has a grid, I have to tune to the other channels to get them to display most of the time, but not always.

This converter box supports ATSC Off-air channels as well as different analog cable channels.
Standard channels (CABLE-STD), harmonically related cable channels (CABLE-HRC) or incrementally related cable channels (CABLE-IRC).

The TRT timer is confirmed.
It operates with the box on or off.
The timer can be thrown by channels that have conflicting time on them.
The box offers a manual time setting.
I haven't tried that yet.


So far, I haven't found a remote conflict with the Pal Plus used on the TRT box.

I tried running the antenna through the analog input.
No result.
I don't have an analog feed to run into it.
I don't think it has an analog pass through in the traditional sense, if at all.

There is a button on the remote that might be it.
I can't tell if it does anything.

The 1009s were much more basic.
I think they sold out of them.


The manual has a picture with the cable/vcr going in the analog input.
The output to the TV is only through an RF cable.
The pictures with RCA or S-video output show all analog bypassing the box.
Not everything in the manual is accurate, but I think this means no analog processing of any kind, unless the cable scan is actuated and works for that.

There is a switch on the remote that is labeled TV/Radio.
I can't determine that it does anything.
It says it is for switching between TV and radio.

I am limited in what I can swap around on the VCR right now.
I will try to experiment further, if the factory can't clarify.

I'm not equipped to scan anything in.

The remote is wide and flat and thin.
It runs on AAAs.
It is flat at the top and thicker and rounded on the lower portion with the batteries.
It works well in the hand, but is very slippery on any hard surface.
It easily skates off anything hard and unlevel.
There is a bright green LED activated with each button.
There is substantial feel to each button.
The output is powerful and well dispersed.
This is the best remote I have seen for a cecb so far.

The Power button is at the top left with the LED on the right.
Next is the TV/R below and Mute on the right.
Next is a 15 button keypad of numbers, with dash on the bottom left and Recall on the bottom right.

Next are 2 rows of three buttons.
PGUP above PGDN.
EXIT over MENU.
FAV+ over FAV-.

Then there is a circle of five buttons.
OK List is in the center.
/\\ CH+ at the top.
\\/ CH - at the bottom.
< V- on the left.
> V+ on the right.

At the bottom is a group of four rows of sixteen smaller buttons.

EPG.... CC.. RTG... FAV

Eight real timer functions and they work whether the box is on or off.
The main power switch would have to be on.

I'm not willing to break the seal, unless the factory waives that, until the 90 day warranty is up.

There is a master power switch on the back.


Signal LED - Bright yellow for a received signal

The signal LED is too bright for my tastes.
Needs to be more diffused, at least with the dim channel display.


Apparently no one that was on this forum bought one first.
As far as I can see, this is the best timer cecb so far.
A must have.
The only reason I'm keeping any zinwells, is because of possible remote conflicts.
