Onkyo TX-NR807 or Sony STR-DA 5300ES refurb?

I bought a Refurbished Sony 5300 ES for $640 from Sonystyle about 15 days ago. It came with 30 days return (I can return it even if I just don't like it) and 90 days parts and labor warranty. So far, the performance of the receiver has been great and no complaints at all.

However, the Onkyo TX-NR807 came up today for about $700 which has good reviews. I am still split whether to keep the Sony or to return it and get the Onkyo TX-NR807. As I am a rookie in the receivers, I don't know if they belong to different categories etc.

What do you guys think about this situation?

To me, the 90 day warranty on an electronic component I paid $640 on is not acceptable. I would return the Sony for something that you can get the full "new product" warranty on. If that includes the 807 you're talking about, so much the better.

Something to be said for a new product with 2 year warranty vs refurb product with 90 days. that ethernet port and internet radio on the Onkyo 807 is a very nice feature too.

Edit: I'm going to post this in the Official TX-807 thread, so you can answer it there:

Retailers advertise the Onkyo TX-807 as a "135 watts x 7 channels" receiver, however the Onkyo website says that it is "135 watts, 2 channels driven."

http://onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=TX-N...s=Receiver&p=s

Does this mean it can only put out 135 watts when just two channels are being powered? How many watts RMS is this receiver putting out in the full and normal 7.1 mode?

do yourself a favor and return it. the 807 will give you so much more for your money. the feature set on the 807 is amazing, you get internet radio, which gives you thousands of radio stations to choose from and Pandora which is absolutely great for listening to music you want to listen too. the 807 will give you better video scaling capability as it uses a newer chipset, also you get Audyssey MultEQ which is superior to Sony's auto setup plus you get to play with PLIIz and DSX and you will have to hear it to understand just how good it makes your room sound. last but not least when it comes time to due a firmware upgrade you will certainly appreciate owning the 807.

yes i have owned an 807 but quickly upgraded to a 1007, but since $$$$ seem to be important the 807 really offers a lot for the money.

But what about the power from the Onkyo?" I keep reading about the receiver only puttting out "135 watts, 2 channels driven", however, why do they claim 135 watts x 7? Isn't this misleading? My current Sony STR-DG1000 claims 110 watts x 7, and the manual also says, 110watts for the front, center, surround and back surround speakers.

Look in the "Official NR -807 Owner's Thread", there is extensive discussion of this issue.

I have yet to see a Sony non ES receiver meet its published power ratings. I'd get the Onkyo 807 without a second thought of the DG1000.

Home Theater Mag tested the 807 with all 7 channels driven at 0.1% distortion producing only 29.9 watts. I'm not sure if thats a mistake on the magazine's part, but it seems like something was wrong.

With 5 channels driven at 0.1% distortion they got 105.5 watts.

I own an STR-DG1000. It is an STR-DA3200ES without a couple of the ES connectivity features. The two units share a service manual in fact.

Thanks for your replies all. The time has passed while I was busy with something else and now I cannot return it. However, I think it is for better. I am going to upgrade the whole system in about a year anyway (I will definitely need two receivers to have two 7.1 zones). So, I'll use this as a secondary receiver and will have to think about the right receiver for my upgrade.

One thing is for sure. It will not be a Sony again. Though this 5300 ES is working better than expected (excellent sound and video production, plenty of surround options), I want to try other companies which usually have more features than a similar category Sony receiver.
