Super THT build thread - Page 8

Torch it lol you could always blow it up and that might be the biggest BOOM that sub will ever see. Thats harsh, im not knocking you man at all just trying to have a little fun. I owned two klipsch 12's for about 30 minutes before they were packed back up and my $900 refunded to me. Then i just built my own after that and spent the money i saved on a trip to vegas.

If any guy would know.. that guy ^ would.

I just bought a set of THT plans and a dayton 15" DVC know if I could only decide which amp...
Welcome to the club. Have you looked at the PE 240 watt plate amp for your THT?

Turns out that I am really liking the Dayton SA1000 amplifier that I picked to go with my THT. It has a subsonic filter set at 18 hertz which is basically a perfect match with the THT. I know that the Dayton SA1000 is quite a bit more expensive than the Dayton 240 watt plate amplifier, but the Daytone SA1000 has a built in subsonic filter and would serve as a pretty decent amp for other possible projects.

If it's got a switch try turning it off. THT has maximum excursion at 22Hz, below that excursion drops, so there's no need to use a HP filter for driver protection.

Random question...How much space is there between the back of the DVC magnet and the enclosure wall?

I'll do that then, I must have missed that nugget of information in all the build threads, I guess I probably got too distracted from looking at all the pretty pictures instead of reading.

"Random question...How much space is there between the back of the DVC magnet and the enclosure wall?"

if nobody jumps in with the actual number, dayton specs a 7 3/8" mounting depth and the chamber appears to be about 9-10" or so deep at the driver, though it is a little wider on one side and a little narrower on the other, so there is probably 2-3 inches of space behind the driver.

If I wasn't so paranoid about getting the access panel to seal perfectly again I would take the access panel off and measure it. Going off of what LTD02 suggested I would guess around 2".

So now that I turned off the subsonic filter should I re-run Audyssey?

I guess, since Audyssey was probably boosting below 30 Hz trying to compensate for the filter.

Darn, that's what I figured, I guess I have something to do tonight then! Will be interesting to see if it makes a difference, or if it will even be audible.

Long time since I posted an update. Finally dragged the Tuba outside and did a coat of Dupli-color bed liner on it, worked out nicely. I had been planning to make it look like a cabinet, but... laziness and lack of quality woodworking tools pushed me towards the black bed liner route. The Tuba is still amazing me, very happy that I went the way of the TUBA.

I'm also building a 30" one. How much wood did you need? Someone said two 5x5 sheets would be good, but I just want a second opinion.

You will need way more than that. A minimum would be (3) 4x8' sheets. I used a full four on my 36"-er.

5'x5' is way more efficient for a 30-inch then. Use the cutlist program and try it yourself, or PM me and I will send you a PDF of my cut sheets.
EDIT: ERROR!!! It's four 5x5" sheets. See below!

Agreed; you can simply rip the sheet in half. I'm not sure how many 5x5's would be necessary, the CutList program is very helpful (I used it for my build too).
Actually, I have to apologize here, it's *four* sheets of 5x5'. I dunno what I was thinking.
Costs me about $100.

Not in half!
If you need to have them ripped to carry them home, cut two in half and two at 36 inches (or a bit more if you want to square it up yourself) for the two side panels.

You can use CutList to figure out the very optimal use of the 4 sheets for the 12 main pieces, and then use the remaining pieces as input sheets for the braces. They fit within what's left.

You are correct; I was thinking cutting in half for the inner panels, not the two sides.

Well I got a blu ray player for chistmas, and noticed that the Dayton amplifier would occasionally clip and go into protection when asked to reproduce some of the more "lively" LFE found in the HD formats, I was finally fed up with how touchy the dayton amp was. I bought a used Behringer 2500 for $155 on ebay and couldn't be happier!!! I don't even have to do a fan mod, I have a glass door on my new audio rack which blocks the fan noise nicely. For those that are wanting to amplify their THT's, I would look for a nice deal on a used Behringer 2500.
The Behringer 2500 is at the very bottom of the rack (lower right hand green light)

So,it must be quite a difference between the gutless Dayton and the EP2500.

Did you crank it up yet ,let's say 30 volts?
Lookin' good! Nice build.

I guess I am not the only one that said, "Damn! This thing is huge!!"

I have definitely cranked it, and in my huge room I do believe that the THT is at its limit, but at least now I can get that extra couple of db's out of it without the amp giving up. So I have gained that slight headroom that I needed. I absolutely love the behringer 2500 for a sub amp, what a value, especially after reading about how it is simply a clone of the much more expensive QSC RMX 2450.
