help with application in an RV

Thread Starter
I would like some input on a rather niche problem that I have. Currently, I have very cheap HTIB in an RV. It is an import that doesn't even have a brand name on it. It is a small all-in-one with DVD, AM/FM radio, USB, Aux-in and an internal Dolby 5.1 surround sound amp. I have 5.1 speakers directly wired to the unit. The unit only has composite video outputs to the TV.

After the HD digital transition, I replaced the TV in the RV to a 19" LCD with HDMI inputs. I am looking to replace the HTIB with one that provides an HDMI output. Also, the cheap HTIB that I currently have is not good at playing DVDs. They have to be in pristine condition for the player to play them.

So, my goal is to upgrade to something of a higher quality with a more reliable DVD player that also provides an HDMI output. Problem is, none of the HTIB that I can find today are small enough. Does anyone know of an ultra-small HTIB that is a reliable brand? I have height - just not a lot of depth or width. So I could also do a very small receiver with HDMI switching and a standalone, small DVD player with HDMI output to the receiver. I just can't find anything small enough.

Because I can't find a small enough, quality, HTIB, I was looking at the newly released Dell ZinoHD. It is only 8" x 8" and would fit nicely. It appears that I can configure it with a basic processor, 2 GB RAM, Blueray, and video/sound card with HDMI outputs for around $350, about the same price as a good HTIB (if one would fit).

My question is - using the HDMI cable to the TV and the TV speakers is fine for playing DVDs. However, I'd also like to be able to use the 5.1 speakers that are already installed in the RV occasionally. How do I feed 5.1 speakers from a PC? Is it possible?

You would need an amp that will accept HDMI, SPDIF or multichannel analog. Alternatively, you could use powered speakers.

The speakers are already installed and wired in the RV - can't redo those easily. So, is there a very small AMP that accepts HDMI or SPDIF? I don't need a lot of power.

Your best bet will probably be a 5.1 car amp. I would search http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=160 or mp3car.com for information on one or ask in that forum. It will be SPDIF, I don't think there are any that are HDMI. I doubt that you will find a home system with the small form factor that you would need.
