Xbox Software "Update"; 1080p Streaming Video is Amazing

I was expecting a Dashboard update and all they did was release four or five new free application downloads (which is what the Netflix player is, though they did release that along with the NXE Dashboard update). That pretty cool, as people without an interest in the Zune stuff, Facebook, Twitter or Last.fm don't have to download and install the bits they don't want.

I was extremely impressed by the new Zune video. You can check out the 1080p Smooth Streaming by watching the previews for some of the new release movies. I tried several that were in HD with digital surround: State of Play, Drag Me To Hell and Land of the Lost, to name a few. Curiously, there are a few titles that are only available for purchase in SD, yet the previews for them are in HD (Star Trek was one of those).

You can monitor the current connection speed/quality indicator by bringing up the Info Pane (INFO button on the remote, "i" button on control panel you can use with the pad). Mostly my connection stayed rock solid and the streaming stayed at 1080p HD, but I saw one or two very brief fluctuations--a moment of a lower quality encoding with absolutely no pause. Starting the clips really was "instant" taking no more than a second or two. Very, very cool.

So, is this update for streaming netflix movies in HD and 5.1 surround from the current netflix application that the xbox has, or is this different?
The Zune quality is pretty good but in general I am disappointed with the update...I hadn't read into it much but I expected the social stuff (Facebook, Twitter) to be integrated into the dashboard...the fact you have to find it on the menu and "start" the program makes it a bit of a pain...better than nothing but not great...

No. The video component is a replacement for the Xbox Live Video Store, with videos for rental and purchase. Like the Playstation Store, movies can only be purchased in SD; if there's an HD version of the same movie, it can only be rented. Television episodes, on the other hand, can only be purchased. Anything that you can stream can also be downloaded. I'm not sure about the resolution of HD downloads.

So this doesn't appear as a dash update? Therefore not killing the third party memory cards?

Not being into social networking, I could care less about that stuff and really like the fact that I don't have to waste space on my HDD to support it, which Dashboard integration would have. (I know, it's not much, but every little bit helps, given my 20GB HDD).

Actually, Twitter does seem to be integrated (which makes sense, since you're supposed to be able to configure it to make tweets telling people when you log in and when you start to play games, etc). They probably added it in that last update, which went unexplained except that it contained things necessary for the upcoming Zune/Facebook/Twitter update; they just waited until now to activate it.

Anyone seeing the exclusive 4 minute scene from Avatar? It's supposed to be there but I'm not seeing it anywhere.

Wasn't the memory card update a week or two ago? I remember getting an update recently...

Already happened.

It is a bit disappointing that last.fm wasn't integrated. I'd sort of hoped that I could use it as game music, but no such luck, since it stops playing when you go back up to the dashboard.

That is a bummer.

Maybe it's too resource intensive, especially if you're playing an online game. I was beta testing the new features and from everything I could tell it's definitely more of a casual update. I like the Zune integration though. All in all not a very profound update but for people that want these features the more the merrier. That's one reason I'm glad they weren't installed to the dash. I'd rather have the option of whether or not I actually want them. Maybe they'll find a better way to integrate them in a later update where they're not intrusive. Who knows.

Caught up on some Supernatural for this season and did the streaming which was available up to 1080p.

The Zune Marketplace is cool, but Ive hit a wee problem....
Tried out a couple of the HD previews, very very impressive. Decided to try an SD preview too, but now everytime I check out a preview I only get a SD option. My other box in the back room can still choose HD (as I never tried the SD option on that). Cant see a setting on the machine to re-enable the HD option.
Ideas?

I'm disappointed that I was required to do the update to keep accessing the store; I skimmed through the terms of service agreement, then gave up because it was 5 pages long, and now when I access videos off my drive it takes an extra 6-7 seconds to pull up the list. Is it really necessary to use this slow piece of software when I'm playing stuff I've already downloaded?

For Silver members who want to try out the new features, there is a free Gold weekend coming up (Nov. 20 -23). Also, current Gold members will receive 50% off if they renew now.

Edit: European Silver members will have to wait a bit, but they get an extra 2 days (Nov. 25 - 30).

" Is it really necessary to use this slow piece of software when I'm playing stuff I've already downloaded?"

This will be pretty temporary during the transition period. No new downloads should be coming out, and instead everything should be streamed. It's just legacy content that will have this issue.

Unfortunately that would seem to be the case; the only video I can access without starting that up is stuff from DLNA/UPnP servers on my LAN. Fortunately, I don't keep much video stored on my HDD.

Though I appreciate the option to leave out Facebook and last.fm, the Zune Video Store is probably a component which they should have provided as part of the dashboard.

I feel certain that they will always allow you to download rentals and purchases. Some people don't have network service fast enough to stream the highest quality encoding, but watching a download will always be highest quality.

It really doesn't matter, though--if you have a bunch of downloads on your HDD, it'd be nice if you didn't have to start up the Zune Video Store software every time. It's pretty quick once it's running, but its start up time is annoying.

Where did you hear this? I can find news about the free weekend easily enough, but that tidbit doesn't seem to be even in that forum post that you cited. My XBL Gold membership auto-renews on the 2nd, but if I can renew now and save $25 I will.

Sorry guys... no link. This deal is on the dashboard in XBL. However, I'm in Canada, so maybe the offer isn't available to everyone. It should be under the Spotlight heading, 2nd one in.

The US Cheap Gold link is in the dashboard, at $10 for 3 months instead of the normal $20. In other words, $40 a year, not half off. If it's not showing up in your dashboard, that makes sense as the thing is pretty dynamic.

"I feel certain that they will always allow you to download rentals and purchases."

The man is complaining about speed of access for video. The new streaming stuff will always be faster than any previous form of downloading.

Wired cable internet connection with 20mb/2mb. Full bars and the picture quality was incredible for streaming. The full bars remained steady the whole time.

Actually "the man" (Shadowknight) was complaining about the speed at which the Zune Video app starts up, since he has to use it to access the stuff stored on his HDD. Whether you're playing stuff from the HDD or streaming, that wait will be the same. He feels that he shouldn't have to wait and I agree.

I was responding to your assertion that "no new downloads will be coming out". I disagree. Obviously, you can start playing the stream much, much faster than you can play a file that you download, but some people will want to do it all the same because their service isn't fast enough to support HD streaming. I doubt that MS will care either way. Obviously, if your network service is fast enough to deliver a stream good enough for you (and "good enough" might vary according to what you're watching), you'll choose the streaming option.

Bingo.

At this point, I have no idea what's going on with this Zune integration malarky; it could lead to some very cool stuff, or some very annoying stuff, but I feel that forcing me to use a slow app instead of the relatively quick XMB for videos already on my hard drive to be annoying.

Let me phrase it a different way then. I had the same issue a month ago when I started using this dashboard. I thought that they did a pretty terrible job of allowing access to locally stored video. Then it dawned on me that it is merely a legacy issue. Anything in the future will have the option of streaming (yeah, I'm sure they'll still allow download, whatever). Streaming is of course the far more sensible method of distributing linear information such as video.

In other words, giving up 6 seconds at point A in order to save minutes, if not hours, at point B is a great trade. Assuming your internet connection isn't a piece of crap, you'll find the future to be a nicer place to be than the past was. If your internet is a piece of crap? Well, I'll just be a jerk and tell you that I don't care.

Anybody know how to 'fix' this? I still get the HD download option should I want to rent a movie.

I was just reading this article on Gamespot; the last line of the article states:

However, streaming instant-on HD video will require a 4mbps broadband connection and a HDCP-compliant 1080p display connected to the 360 with an HDMI cable.

I have a first gen 360 connected via VGA; I really can't stream 1080p content due to HDCP issues? I obviously haven't tried it, but I was hoping to check it out.

I doubt that there's a problem with sending 1080p through VGA. Even the licensing for Blu-ray allows HD output over VGA.
