Audio Question

TV Model = Samsung PN58B650

I play all my movies via BluRay drive in a computer behind the TV. The Computer is hooked up on a HDMI to the TV and the audio is running over SPDIF on the video card. If I was to buy a receiver I would need to buy a sound card for the computer also correct? So it would go Sound card (Computer) to receiver to TV?

No sound card necessary.

What video card are you using? Most these days can send audio over the HDMI cable so you only need to get a receiver with HDMI support and run HDMI from PC --> receiver --> TV. And if not, you can do the same as you are now over SPDIF, it will just go to your receiver instead.

9800 GX2 ... to get audio I had to hook up the SPDIF.

So I would go HDMI to Receiver and Receiver to TV?

How is the Video outputted from the computer then to the TV?

Sorry I am still pretty new to this Home Theater scene.

My setup is HTPC To receiver via HDMI. I then have my tv connected to my receiver via HDMI. The receiver will send the video signal to the tv via HDMI and output the audio signal to your speakers.

Can you give the exact make/model of the 9800 GX2? What is the model of your receiver?

HDMI allows you to pass both audio and video on a single cable. Think of it like a tunnel for video and sound. So it travels from your PC to the receiver, then from the receiver to your TV. If your receiver supports it the audio content can be decoded at the receiver while the video is passed to the TV, or the audio can be passed on to your TV along with the video.

EVGA 9800 GX2

Denon AVR 1610

I knew HDMI allowed you to I just was not sure that it would pass through the receiver. That makes sense thank you very much. I appreciate it.

Here is a somewhat related question.

Is there any quality diferences between sending audio over an HDMI cable from the PC to the receiver, versus from the PC to receiver over an SPDIF/optical cable?

Only if you get into bitstreaming (TrueHD/DTS-MA) or LPCM of any audio source higher than 16-bit 48KHz.
