*Official* Mitsubishi HC3800 Thread

Thread Starter
Time to start a official thread of Mits HC3800.

Received mine today (replaced a Optoma HD70).

Without any tweakings the increase in contrast, brightness and resolution (expected 1080p > 720p) is visible against my old HD70.

with my XBOX360, no visible input lag difference...played a little FIFA 10 and made the test with the "famous" Megamen 8.

Please put here all the tweaks and setup tips.

Have you had any problems with the unit shutting off?
How loud is the unit in standard mode, compare it to other pj's you've had, How close do you set to the HC3800?
noise is rated at 25db on low and 29 on high. On low lamp, unless your within inches around it, fan noise should not be noticeable.

European unit (from France) and same crap! A couple of random shutdowns. Very angry because it's sad to have a great Picture Quality in a not reliable machine...

Aren't you tired to be the quality control department of the big corporations?

I am.

I was excited for this projector to come out. Now I'm disgusted and waiting for the fix before I buy.

I have a dumb question; is the HC3800 a replacement for the HC1500, HC1700 ? Don't see them listed on the Mits web site.

Is there a break-in period for projectors? Can i just go ahead and adjust everything to my liking? I like the way it looks with contrast set about (10).. Im 11hrs in so far..

There's already a thread on this projector, and it even has a more accurate name than this one.

So far no problems with shutdowns, and the picture is stunning. Fan noise in low lamp mode is almost inaudible.

I use in a small room and the picture size is about 90".

I use 80% to play XBOX 360 and PS3 games and one major problem to choose the right projector was input lag...compared to my old Optoma HD70 I dont see any difference...no visible lag.

Played some BluRay movies and I can say with confidence you have to double your money to find a projector with better picture quality.

The only problem is the absence of lens shift and a offset large than normal, but in my case is a plus because I have a small room.

Shutdown issues may be linked to the hdmi cable length setting somewhere in the menu as mentioned in the other 3800 thread. May be some truth to this...waiting for owners response to confirm. You might want to chk it out.
There isn't any HDMI length(or anything even close to that) in the user manual. It must be in the service manual that is not available.

That was mentioned as users could not find it...either way I'm sure the issue will 'eventually' be resolved.
Is everyone useing just HDMI? Otherwise I don't see why it makes any difference.

Hello.
I live in Germany and do have the same shutdown problem along with one other
Owner who posted this in the german "www.hifi-forum.de".
I have also no solution yet.
I get a replacement unit from my dealer tomorrow i hope.
I will keep you informed how it works or if someone in the german forum gets a
solution for the random shutdowns.
Seems the Mitsubishi Service runs into a lot of work...
My first unit was connected via 10m hdmi-cable to a Panasonic DMP-BD30 BluRay and
then to a DVD.
The strange thing: There was no shutdowns in two hours when i watch DVD at 1080p/50Hz.
But possibly that was luck.
Thanks for the update...this should be resolved soon by Mits I would suspect as it seems to be a 'global' issue with their 3800's.

I'm amazed at how sharp the HC3800 is...This thing could easily be made to be a pc monitor.. 120" pc moniter..lol

The colors are also very rich and deep..better than my 1080p 42" lcd.. The problem now is, not all DVDs have very good upscale quality...some movies look down right ugly and having a 100"+ screen does not make it better... Transformers looks OK i guess...KIng Kong looked amazing, Ice age 3 look really good...transporter look OK not the best....oh well.. now i have to buy a blu-ray player...

Yes sir, you do. I seem to remember you have a Xbox360. Now you have an excuse to get yourself a PS3. The best blu-ray player right now. It's closer competitor is the Oppo, but that one is more expensive after the ps3 price cut. Plus the ps3 does so many other stuff the oppo cannot.. Transformers in Blu-Ray its amazing!!!

The PS3 is the best Blu-ray player right now? Spoken like a true PS3 owner.

Yes, I am a proud owner! But look around, it is the fastest and more fully featured player, including Netflix functionality, that is without including its gaming capabilities!!

In the unofficial 3800 thread Ulig67 had received a replacement 3800 from Mitsubishi. So far it appears to be working and he noticed that it has a different serial number from his original 3800.

Here are his serial numbers from the two units:
working unit #S0001846
non-working #S0001880

Could everyone with or without the shutdown issue please post their serial number and whether or no they have the shutdown issue.

Sorry about posting this in both threads, but Ulig67 may be on to something. Serial numbers change when a manufacturer has made a change so there must be something different.
Everyone has a different serial number. The HC3800 serial numbers seem to be numbered in correlation to the number of projector off the manufacturng line. The closeness in numbers indicate that they were produced on the same line at almost the same time. If the new one doen't have a problem, then it appears that there is a serious manufacturing defect not related to firmware.

Has any one had trouble watching Direct TV with the Mitsubishi 3800?

I have the direct tv HD DVR box hooked up to my Onkyo TS SR 806 receiver via a 3ft HDMI cable. Then using a 12 ft HDMI cable I have the receiver hooked up to the projector. If I turn everything on at once, I get these annoying green lines on the screen. However, If I turn on the projector first and wait for it to power up until the blue screen comes on before I turn on the DTV, then there is no issue. Also, this issue doesnt come up with my DVD player or my XBox. Also, I have the receiver set to pass through, so there is no upscaling going on.

Any ideas out there?
Some HDMI devices require a certain turn on sequence to lock on. Sometimes the receiver or player must be on before the projector so it has something to lock onto. then others require the projector be on first.

I always turn on the 3800 last.

Can the mods please merge the "unofficial" and the "official" threads in one?

Having 2 differents threads for the same projector is kinda umm.....

Plus I started a tweaking thread. I'm seeing lots of the same issues being discussed here again...yikes...what we really need is a sticky thread with all the basics summarized. Having 3 threads is useless.

What kind of ceiling mount did you guys buy for your HC3800? I am installing in a basement that is just framed at this point, so how would I install it between the joists as well?? THX in advance!
