Wii S-Video Issue

I just got this s-video cable from Monoprice and it's kinda driving me nuts.

When bright colors are shown on screen, they seem to have like a halftone pattern going on. It's like dot crawl... sort of. Like dot crawl meets the pictures in newspaper print when viewed closely.

It's not something that causes the video to be distorted, it's just very very irritating. My PS2's s-vid cable used to do the same thing. I've since tied it a certain way and it rarely halftones the screen anymore.

Anyone know what this is or what's causing it? Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like it might be electrical interference. Make sure the cable is as far from power cables as possible and if you have to cross them, make sure to do so at a 90 degree angle.

Thanks, that's good advice. I'm gonna go ahead and move them around and see if I can solve this.

Unfortunately it seems to have gotten worst now. Heh. I managed to take a snapshot of the screen:

If you look close, you can see what I'm talking about. It looks like a checkerboard pattern. When it's on the tv screen, it almost looks like diagonal lines that are going from left to right.

Maybe it's a side effect of s-vid on your set? You stated the same thing was visible on a PS2 via s-vid, yes?

For the best Wii PQ, you want to use the component cable set, if possible.

They can be found just about anywhere Wii gear is sold, but I suggest saving some coinage & get a set via Monoprice. I use their Wii component set - as good as the official cables & less than half the price.

Yeah, my PS2's s-vid cable does cause the same thing but when it's tied a certain way (like it is now) the problem goes away. It's tied in a loop with a wire tie. I haven't been able to get that to work with my Wii's cable.

And the tv I'm using is just an old 27" crt from 2000. S-vid is as good as it gets on that set. Still works incredibly well though.

It could just be a bad cable. See if you can exchange it with Monoprice.

Years ago, I experienced the same kind of problem on my Dreamcast with a third-party s-video cable. I bought a different s-video cable, and the problem went away.

I think my problem has something to do with the gold plated connectors. Now that I think about it, I remember awhile back reading about gold connectors as just a way to make money, not to improve the wire.

And of course, both my Wii and PS2 wires are gold plated. The S-video cables from my GameCube and N64 are silver plated and work excellently.

That could be the problem or maybe not. In any case, I'll just buy another cable for my Wii. No big deal.
