Cheaper Receiver w/ Amp vs. High End Receiver

So...I came upon an interesting situation. Would going the route of a cheap AVR (such as an HK-254) paired with an external amp (such as an Emotiva XPA-5) be better than getting a higher end AVR, such as an Onkyo TX-NR3007?

I understand the Onkyo comes with a lot more features like internet radio, HD radio, more ports, better upscaling, and etc., but if those are all replaceable with a Squeezebox, and audio is more important, would the AVR/AMP solution be better?

Thanks!

This is mostly hypothetical, but it could become true in the future!

FWIW, I own an Onkyo TX-SR876 and a HK AVR-247.

If you have the room for it, go for the separate amp - Emotiva has a good reputation for building high value amps. That way, when a pre/pro, or AVR, comes along in the future with features you just "have" to have, you're ready to go!
