My TV has a Digital Audio Out(Optical) to headphone out converter.

Hi,

My TV has what it calls a "Digital Audio Out(Optical)" for audio but not headphone out. I am wondering if anyone knows of some sort of jack that can be used to allow me to plug headphones in this jack. If possible I would like to avoid any expensive surround set-ups with a headphone in jack. From googling I have seen this as a solution to my problem, but I would ofcourse like to save the money if it is possible by just buying some sort of converter jack. Thanks so much for any help you can provide.

You need a DAC and they do cost money. Define expensive.

Thanks for the reply. If possible I am just looking for some sort of jack converter that would cost $2 or something. I am just kind of amazed that the only solution costs $75-100 bucks.

you have to convert the Toslink optical out in two ways....the signal is optical and it must be converted back to analog electrical signals and the information is digital optical pulses, which must be read, decoded, and converted to analog audio streams.

Does the TV and a pair of good old fashioned red/white RCA output plugs ?

That's right. A simple converter likely isn't going to work because even if you could convert the optical digital signal to analog, you still have to amplify that analog signal for your headphones.
