Sand for riser?

Play sand is ~ 100 pounds per cubic foot bulk density. So a 50 lb bad from the store will fill 0.5 cubic feet.

Just make sure its as dry as a.....well you know.

I'm no expert, but most people I see use sand for their stage and insulation for the riser. In extreme cases they use uboats for their riser to decouple it from the floor. That's almost the opposite of using sand.

Man - I can barely fit a home theatre in my basement let alone a German submarine!

In all seriousness what is a uboat in this situation?

As mentioned before, you don't need sand in a riser unless you are putting a sub on it. Fluffy insulation is fine. Same goes with Uboats or any type of isolation technique.. only recommended if you are putting an active vibration source on or in the riser.

when using sand, are you supposed to pack it in or just dump it and thats it? reason i ask is because im currently doing it as we speak and i can fit just over 1 bag more by packing it in by hand. any difference?

If it's dry, you can just dump it in. It will find it's own level. I lined my cavities with plastic to keep the sand in (so it didn't seep out the sides and under the framing).

If it's wet, you will need to dry it out first....best to buy dry sand.
