Canon HG21 video format question

Thread Starter
I'm in the market for an HD camcorder. I have an LCD tv (55LH40 by LG) with a native resolution of 1920 x 1080. It has a USB port which can play video files. MPEG3 I know of for sure - keep that in mind for later...

I also have a Blue-ray player (BD390) that can handle:
MPEG2, HP@ML, MPEG4 AVC, HP@L4.1, SMPTE VC1, AP@L3, AVCHD, DivX/DivX HD, MKV.

It can also stream the content wirelessly from my PC to my blu ray player. So my goal is to just offload the AVCHD content directly from the Canon HG21 on to my PC and then "stream" it over to the Bluray player. Sound smart??

Can I burn AVCHD onto a DVD disc, and if so, how many minutes of 1920x1080 can I fit on one single sided DVD disc?

Lastly, can I convert down from 1920x1080 to MPEG3 or 4 using the software that comes with the camera? I'd like to upload some stuff to youtube after editting, so I'd also like to have a "quality" variable if possible. I do not want to do a lot of fancy editting. Just don't want all this awesome video that I can only watch on one TV and in my house... so other formats and sampling down to non HD would be a big plus.

I want to ask, because the below post involves not even beign able to get the AVCHD content off of the HG21 !!

A regular 4.7Gig DVD will hold around 30 to 35 minutes of AVCHD content, Dual Layer 8.5 discs will hold about 1Hr 10 minutes at the most...The software that comes with the camcorder sucks....Grab Pinnacle Studio 14, it will allow you to do all your needs easily, It will automatically render your footage for You tube presentations as well as AVCHD discs, DVD and Blu-ray..works very well with AVCHD footage and editing is a breeze, plus the cost is very reasonable...I connect my HG21 directly to my PS3 and play my files from the camcorder or from the SDHC card, I also have Sony Vegas Pro 9, as well as Pinnacle Studio 14 for my editing needs....I just move the files of my camcorder directly onto my PC and render and edit from there...I never use the software that comes with the camcorder, just plug in the camcorder to the pc and drag the files onto the Hard drive....MY HG21 and HG10 have never given me any problems in moving files to a PC.....And I love them both....

Count on 20 minutes on a single 4.7GB DVD. A little more really, but not much. As long as you have a decent bluray player (PS3) you should be able to play the media type unedited on a data DVD.

Getting stuff off of the camcorder should be easy. It has flash card slot(s), you can even transfer footage between HDD and flash and vice versa on camera. It might be hard to find the right menu option for that functionality, but it does have it. The menu seemed a bit overly complex when I tested an HG20 at best buy over a year ago.

The software that comes with the cam is c##p. Use something else. Lots of functional options these days. Some are even free.

Streamed from a PC, sounds smart, err green in terms of the landfill. But that's another device running up your electric bill and energy is at a premium these days.
