Audio during commercials, any AGC devices out there?

Real simple problem. On various channels, when commercials come on the volume goes real high. I have tried setting the DVR box to max volume and utilizing the surround sound volume as the control for audio out of the speakers.
The TV, Samsung 550, is not in any way shape or form in charge of audio as its speakers are turned off.
When the DVR is in control of the audio, there is no difference. Commercials come on and wham, it goes up at least 3dB.
Is there any device I can hook up to the back of the DVR, or inline to the DVR to control volume output?
Its an Oceanic Explore 8300HDC, scientific atlantic.

I've got the same issue with a lot of Comcast's commercial broadcasts. Holy crap, if they're trying to get my attention, it's working!

I know some receivers/processors have built-in "dynamic volume" or some such processing to try and even-out the overall repsonse, but I've always been a little concerned about losing dynamic range of the actual program material...how does it know when a commercial comes on?

Anyway, I guess what I'm saying is, though I can't really help you directly, this question might get more/better responses if asked over in the receiver section. Though the problem might be originating at your DVR, the solution will probably have to come from someplece else. Good luck!
