I am looking for HDTV purchase advice

Hi,

I currently have an older Pioneer 60" TV, Toshiba DVD, Sony receiver, Tivo and DirectTV. I have been pretty happy with my current configuration. We primarily watch network and cable programs through our Tivo. I have an "opportunity" shortly to upgrade the TV to a newer HDTV-ready set. I have approximately 3-4K to spend, my room is 13' wide and 16' from the back of the TV to the back of the seating area. I have read some very impressive things about the DVDO IScan+ and would happily incorporate that into my new config . . .I have been considering the Toshiba TW56X81 but I am open to suggestions.
What would you guys recommend?

you can always use another hdtv stb with the toshiba sets. with the new audio authority adaptor you can even use a stb like the rca one that only has rgb outs on it. I would recommend combination of the dish system plus the panasonic stb and panasonic dvhs. however this is expensive and its being phased out. once you have the ability to watch hdtv when you want to, you wont want to go back to anything else.

Richard,

I just purchased a Used Sony VPH-1272Q from a company called Extreme Projections (www.extremeprojections.com) for $2200. The unit had 1400 hours on the CRTs. Ask for Brandon. The prices listed on his web site are VERY negotiable. I know he has let some VPH-G70Q projectors go for about 5-6k. The G70Q is a fantastic projector, although it does not have 9" CRT's.

Also, you can pick up a used VPH-1292Q, which has 9" CRTs for about the same price as the G70Q. The 1292Q is quite noisy, and MUCH larger. The picture quality of the 1292Q is supposed to be about as good as their flagship VPH-G90Q.

I am perfectly happy with the 1272Q, but if you are willing to spend the extra money, it is well worth it.

I know lots of people shy away from buying used CRT projectors, but my experience has been great. The quality of the picture completely blows away any rear projection I have seen. Even in a worst case scenario, the tubes can be replaced for around 2k. They even gave me a week to evaluate the unit.

Also, don't forget you will need a screen, which runs about $1000 to $1200 new, unless you go with a microperf (for putting center channel behind the screen) which runs the price up to about 5k.

Hope this helps. I am just getting started on my HT, but have done a lot of research on Sony CRT projectors.
