Upscaling: 500 lines per resolution? Is it really upscaling?

I bought DVD player for my mom(nothing fancy needed) to paly dvd movies and upscale them for her 42" Plasma TV 720p. It saids it upscales to 1080P,(HDMI), but in the specs it saids for lines per resolution 500. That seems pretty low for a DVD player that will upscale to 1080p, how is this possible? Or is it really upscaling?

I guess that is actual resolution (expressed as horizontal lines). "Upscaling to 1080" refers only to vertical ones - no player will increase actual horizontal resolution (would need pixel-based interpolation). Upscalling is not increasing the existing quality of the image, it just makes it "fit" easyer.

What DVD player? And are you confusing the analog output specs with the digital output specs?
