anyone have any input on this setup? I have a samsung ln530 lcd,ps3 and comcast digital cable box. I live in an apartment so I would like something that I dont have to run and hide wires everywhere. It seems like it has pretty good reviews.

Just picked it up at BB for 279 during black friday. I tested the system and sounds good for a 1st HTIB. I'm going to keep it if I can drive the surround sound w/ my blue ray player. See my post.

You are going to need to be a little more specific in your info for anyone to help.

What, exactly, do you have hooked up to what, and with what kind of cable?

For instance, for TV sound(meaning the TV tuner is the source) you are going to need a cable from the TV output to the receiver's input. Specifically, the optical output of the TV to the optical input of the receiver.

How is the PS3 working?

Sorry not too experianced in this stuff.
Right now the SS receiver is hooked to the tv with hdmi cord.
I have rca cords hooked from back of receiver to tv. (yellow, white and red)
Optical cords will be orderd shortly but for now I am just trying to hook things up to make sure they work.

I haven't tried the ps3 yet, kid took it down stairs last night but before it ran find just hooked up to tv with hdmi cord.

I thought if I did have the optical cable it would be much easier since just one cord instead of yellow, white and red rca, plus alot better quility.

The directions seemed so simple.
Radio on the receiver works fine, it came with ipod adapter but i have not tried that yet to see how that works.

the tv and the surrond are both bravia sinc, whatever that means along with the ps3.

Sorry if i need to be more specific.

Okay, with RCA cables you only need two-red and white. That's for stereo sound. The third one is for video, which you do not need to use in your situation.

To clarify, you want the RCAs connected from Audio OUT on the tv to Audio IN on the receiver. That should get you at least stereo sound out of your surround system. You'll have to check the manual to see if there are other settings(ie Dolby Pro Logic) you can use with stereo inputs on your receiver.

From reading a review of that system, the only way you could have 3 RCA cables between the TV and receiver is if they are connected from the outputs of the receiver to the inputs of the tv- that is NOT what you want. The only output from the receiver to the input of the tv you need is the HDMI one that you are using.

edit: the optical cable would be better than RCAs because that's usually how you get surround sound out from the tv, instead of just stereo.

Posted earlier by cell phone, not sure where it went.

Don't I need the yellow rca cord for video for the dvd player?

The receiver is set on dolby pro logic. i will double check the audio in's and out to see if I have them backwards tonight when i get home from work.

Thanks so much.

Anything your receiver is capable of outputting goes out on that HDMI cable, the yellow one is only if you didn't have an HDMI input on your TV.

The only thing I noticed is that I have the two rca (red & white ) from receiver audio in to the rca red and white connectors on the side of the tv. Not sure if these are in's or outs' I have the hdmi cable pluged right above them (hdmi 5). I ordered a optical cable on-line when I get that I will plug that into the optical slot on the back of tv.

When I get a chance this weekend (two people) I will take the tv down from off the wall and plug the hdmi in the back of the tv and the red & white rca to the back of the tv too see if this makes a different.

I played an dvd the other day and the surround sound work fine thru all the speakers. Its just getting the tv to come thru the speakers. I was hoping to get this done by the time football comes on sunday, oh well.

The dvd works because the sound is flowing through what seems to be a correctly hooked up HDMI cable between your TV and receiver.

I just read the instuction manual on your tv and those side RCA connectors are INPUTS. They are meant to accept a signal from a dvd player or something similar.

That's why no tv sound- your receiver is getting nothing from your TV. The RCA outputs are on the back, right under the digital optical output. By the way, if you use the optical out then you don't need to use the RCAs. Advantage of optical is you'll get the 5.1 signal out to your receiver.

Thats what I figured, that I had to use the outputs in the back. Tv on the wall so this weekend I will try that.

Thanks so much for your help I really appreaciate it.

People like you make these fourms GREAT

Had the time and help today to take the tv off the wall and change the rca plugs. I get sound now when watching tv. I need to get longer speaker wires now. I have two speakers that the wires are too short for where I want to place them. Does anyone know what gauge they are. I thought I read 28agw or something like that. Also can I just splice the whires with the exsisting wire or should I just replace the whole wire? Not sure how the wire comes out of the plugs that get plug into the receiver.

Thanks again,
RON

Sorry one more question.

Like I said above I need to extend a couple speaker wires and I read that they are "PROPRIETARY WIRES".

Does that mean I could not use just regular speaker wire to do this?

I also read in a comment that the wires are 22agw.

Thanks,
RON

Speaker wire is speake wire, but yeah the plug/connectors can be proprietary. There is no reason you can't splice the wires though.

The best way would be to solder them. As long as you can keep good contact in the splice you should be alright in any case.

16 gauge seems to be about as heavy as the average person needs to go. I think most budget HTiBs have 22 gauge or smaller wire. So I imagine 16-18 gauge is what you want to shoot for.

Do you know the best way too hook up the PS3 unit. I have two optical cords. Right now I have an optical cord running from the Home theater receiver to the tv if I want to use the PS# to come over the Home theater how would I hook up the PS3 player. I tried hooking up the optical cord from the PS3 to the home theater receiver but I did not get the surrond sound that I was looking for. Or is there a setting that I need to set to get the PS3 to come thru on the SS.

Thanks,
RON
