The extra contrast and brightness levels especially on some outdoor scenes can be distracting to viewers including some loss of PQ detail. This could have been a better transfer if levels are dialed down a bit.
Aside from that the Blu-ray version is better looking overall. No excessive DNR or EE observed. I just hope in future that we get the "non-boosted" version.

Gah. Check out the shot of the street corner in post #3. Half of the shop signs have been obliterated.
I dunno if you've seen this one Xylon, but there's a shot of Stansfield arriving outside the DEA building (just before Mathilda goes in to 'clean' him) where the skyscrapers in the distance have been erased from about halfway up by the excessive brightness.
Besson approved the master, and all I can say to that is he needs his ****ing eyes tested. Him and Friedkin make a fine pair.

Blu-ray definitely does look better than DVD. And there is definitely detail lost in the Blu-ray due to contrast boosting.
My guess is Besson wanted to "update" the film to make it look more like some of the contrast-heavy films we've seen recently.
Overall though its a big upgrade from the DVD despite the flaws.
BTW, the LFE is also mixed about 10db hotter than typical reference LFE and previous DVDs. It can be very distracting especially in the 40hz and below range.

Take some pics of any scenes with windows (3:07 for example), whatever was visible in the window is now completely gone in the BD.
No upscale could resolve the grain this well: http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/7...shot054620.png
Contrast aside, I'd say it's a slightly above average transfer detail-wise for a 35mm film.

And again I say that your comments simply have no merit. Yes, there's contrast boosting and yes it's to the detriment of the picture. But saying that it looks like an upscaled DVD is a poor joke at best. The resolution is great and there's seemingly no DNR or EE. If it wasn't for the contrast boosting, this would have been a standout presentation of the film.

I hate the fact that I'll be passing on this Blu-ray. There were 3 DVD versions of the film if I remember correctly, so hopefully we can see a new corrected BD in the future. Don't get me wrong, the BD is quite large a improvement over the DVD (More so then I thought it would be actually) but the boosting is enough for me to pass. I've seen the film too many times and the boosting just doesn't look right. In the first set of Oldman pics, you can clearly see that the grain structure has suffered from from the boost. It's Ghostbusters and Stargate all over again. Though I happily re-bought Stargate because the problems were 100% corrected in the 15th Ann. Edition. But the first Stargate disc helped me learn my a lesson. Therefor I didn't buy Ghostbusters, and I won't be buying this.

Luc approved this edition so I wouldn't expect a double dip anytime soon.

Too me, the fleshtones on the BD look superior & there too much red in the other 2 examples.
How does the SD DVD have better colour timing?
BIG thanks.

In this case, the international cut isn't a director's cut... the theatrical cut is what Besson released. The so-called international cut or "version integrale" is referred to by Besson as the "longer version". It adds 23 minutes of footage, most of it character interaction between Mathilda and Leon, including some of the more disturbing relationship scenes and several of the training scenes.

There is also a long version of the film, referred to as "international version" or "version intégrale". It is sometimes called the "Director's Cut" but Besson refers to the original version as the Director's Cut and the new version as "The Long Version". It is also called the "international version" as only this version was released in Japan.[11]
It has approximately 23 minutes of additional footage that was removed from the original release. The additional material is found in the film's second act, and it depicts more of the interactions and relationship between Léon and Mathilda. In one scene, Mathilda plays Russian roulette to try to get Léon to admit he loves her; in another, she openly asks him to be her first lover, but he refuses, although they do innocently share a bed. In another scene he teaches Mathilda the "Ring Trick" which involves knocking on people's door and breaking the chain after the occupant opens the door, and in the event of the occupant fighting back or refusing to open, throwing a grenade inside (when he does, he shows Mathilda the pin). There is also a detailed scene in which Léon teaches Mathilda where to shoot the target, using a cocaine dealer to show her, and how one should never shoot at the face, because doing so would render identification impossible. After he kills the dealer Mathilda burns all the drugs using isopropyl alcohol. He also refers to a past romantic relationship he once had that ended in tragedy and started his career as a hitman. Most of the other material in the longer cut involves Mathilda accompanying Léon on several of his hits, to further her training.

I think most people prefer the longer version, though it's not a universal opinion. It's absolutely worth watching.

Most of the other material in the longer cut involves Mathilda accompanying Léon on several of his hits, to further her training.
The longer version primarily focuses on the possible pedophile relationship hinted at in the Theatrical.
There are times when it becomes very uncomfortable to sit through, IMO.
The video and audio is excellent and entirely worth upgrading from DVD (if you are a fan of the film).
I didn't find the "boosted" contrast to be a problem at all.
Thoroughly enjoyed this BD.
BTW, didn't really notice any EE while actually watching the disk.

And another thing!
The acting is absolutely top-notch.
It would be hard to find 4 better demonstrations of superior acting in one movie.
Jean Reno - the best I have ever seen him.
Natalie Portman - her 1st role, and her best performance.
Gary Oldman - never topped this.
Danny Aiello - his finest...ever.
Four acting performances of the highest degree.
Without these, the movie would have suffered greatly.
After 15 years, this film's power diminishes not in the slightest.
