Thanks.

Anyone heard about any newer perhaps Quality Blu Rays of the Bruce Lee films? Warner is putting out a 40th anniversary of Enter The Dragon...

I believe Japan recently issued a number of Lee's films on Blu-ray. They will likely be as good as it gets.

I'd love to see a comparison between the Fortune Star and Japanese releases.

The Japanese discs (from Paramount) are just the Fortune Star masters again, which is not too surprising since their logo is right on the front covers. The exceptions are Game of Death and Fist of Fury, which include the Japanese theatrical edits as bonus features. Both were taken from battered source prints, but the Japanese edit of GoD looks a bit better than Fortune Star's "remastering" of the standard edit (which was quite likely an upconvert). The Japanese cut of FoF looks worse than the Fortune Star master. You can see some caps in the relevant Blu-ray.com thread. The Japanese cuts have English audio; Paramount also included English tracks for the standard edits (but no English subtitles).

If you just want the standard versions with English audio, you can get the German discs a lot cheaper, though the German FoF is missing seven minutes of English audio that's present on the Japanese disc. Or you can just wait for the Shout Factory releases. In any event, the Japanese cuts of FoF and GoD seem to be the only non-Fortune Star HD masters for any of these films, and apparently the only ones with original theatrical audio.

Looks like there's no need to upgrade my Fortune Star versions. Really sucks if you like any Asian movies and are into A/V quality.

Yes it really does suck!
The bigger story here is that proper restorations from the original negatives is the only way to ever get great image quality in HD. If no money is ever put up to restore them they will eventually be lost forever which is just wrong! These films have paid for themselves so many times over the years.

This makes me frown.gif
I grew up watching BL and he inspired me as a kid to be focused and dedicated in your passions.
His films deserve a proper HD transfer for future generations to see a what a true talented martial artist can do when they shoot for perfection and innovation.

Who has the original film elements for Lee's movies, other than Enter the Dragon?
No idea. Media Asia had them a while. Who actually owns the negatives...? No clue.
As far as I know Fortune Star now owns the rights at least.

I have it from a good source that complete good prints of Bruce Lee's films were found at a Cathay films Warehouse in England. I don't know if they are prints or internegatives but there is a bidding war on them which will hopefully lead to something good!

That is very exciting if true.
