Project Man Cave

Finally I have a chance to customize the basement. Hopefully the space will turn in to a place that I NEVER want to leave. The basement was pretty much completed when we got it. So there's a limit on how I can run the wires. Hopefully I don't have to tear down the whole basement.

(I'm not what you would call a handy person. So this is not a DIY project. This is pay and stand around project)

What's on the list are:
-Custom bar
-Gaming area (62"TV)
-Theater area (82" DLP TV (for sports), 100"-120" projector)
-Karaoke area (its not for me)
-2 Pool tables (1 pocket, 1 carom)
so far that's what on the list. I'll get in to more details as the project move along.

First thing to be complete is the custom BAR.

-Granite counter top
-Wine rack
-Kegerator
-Fridge
-Microwave
-TV

Here are some pics....

(that's not me in the pic, I just stand around and ask annoying questions =) )

Yeah, what he said!

You might want to rethink the BIG tv and the projector. I think you will be happier with the projector over the tv. JMHO.

Actually I was pondering the same thing.

The thing that's a little unconventional about the space is that it will have a "KARAOKE" area. If I have it my way, a nice poker table it is. I do definitely need a TV for the american idols wannabe area. Can't imagine singing while looking at the 100"+ screen. And I will be using a different speakers set up for this area. There's no way some vocal is gonna go trough my HT speakers.

I was thinking to put the 62" in the karaoke space and use it for casual sports viewing (espn is a religion). For the projector I will use it for movies and gaming and occassional big game (ie: saints beat down of NE). I'm still a little icky about using the projector for gaming as of reading some of the reviews on this forum.
Please shed some lights on me about projector and gaming experiences, recommendation, and the do/don't.

My projector is used for everything. Call of Duty, weekly Survivor, NFL games (go colts), Nascar, whatever new Blu-Ray we happen to purchase. The only thing I try to stick with is not to turn it on unless it's going to be on for at least an hour or more. I don't like to turn it on for short periods of time. I don't know why it's just something I've done from the beginning.

We also do everything on our projector.

Sports, HDTV, movies, PS3, Wii... and we wouldn't have it any other way.

If we added a TV to the system, it would either be in the kitchen/bar area (which doesn't have line of sight to the screen) and/or in the bathroom so you REALLY won't miss anything.

Looks like a nice plan and area you'll have. Plus with all the contractors in place it should go pretty fast. I'm looking forward to see it all come together. Keep the pics coming. I have a plasma behind my screen, but haven't really used it and will bring it upstairs soon. I'm using the projector for everything and was just blown away at the quality of HD TV through the PJ.
We spend our entire evenings down he basement now.

With contractors, it'll keep your build from being a 3 year build like mine was.

We do karaoke (via SingStar on the PS3) on the projector. Works well-- especially after a few martinis.

Well, here's the thing. The more time I spend on this (evil) forum the more ideas I have. The more time I spend walking around the basement, the more things I want to do. So I don't think it'll be done anytime soon. Hopefully it won't be 3 years .

About the projector and gaming. Anyone have lagging issues and how's the lamp holding up?

While standing around today, I decide to rip the ceiling/wall to run all the speakers and any needed wiring cables to a centralize location. Was thinking to have everything to one spot (projector/xbox/BD/cable/ect..). Cut the wall, and build a rack. What I did was print out one of the rack picture built by one of the member (meegwell) and tape it on the wall. The contractors just look at me and shook their head.

Here are couple of pics of the progress today.

and I was joking about this forum being EVIL.

My son and his friends play games-- mostly Little Big Planet. No problems with lag or lamp-life. For me, the screen is too big-- I get motion sick.

I know what you mean about this forum being evil-- I came here years ago for tips when I first got an HDTV. After talking to the people here, I've now got a media room with a ten foot wide AT 'scope screen, and furniture that I hacked with transducers.

Well there's your problem, you keep changing things on your contractor. You keep doing that and it WILL be three years and quintuple the budget. 8-)

I would not be too worried as many have said here, and I plan on as well, gaming on the Big Screen. I too agree that this place is EVIL. When I first found AVS I just wanted a projection TV now that just won't do. Go big or go home as many say 'round here.

I can't help but smile when I think about the Saint's putting the good ole spanking on the Pats, priceless. My two favorite teams.......The Colts and who ever is playing the Pats.

So it's safe to guess that you got your xmas present early in November when hoodie Bill failed the 4th and 2yrd attempt. Still have that game on DVR. Will love to play it again as a pregame if the Colts make it to the Superbowl this year.
Not a Colts fan, but a Manning fan. Love the way he run the offense.
I'm a Chicago fan. Chicago; where QB goes to die.

My son plays Call of Duty on line with the PS3. With cable internet there are no lag issues, when he hits the trigger it shoots. And the sound of the PS3 is incredible. As far as the lamp on the projector goes I haven't checked the hours lately but it's been over a year and it still chugging along. Bears? They should have stayed with the Purdue QB, you know the one that took over when Breez left?

We'll (the Vikes) send you Favre in a couple years when we're done with him.

That would only be fair - we took McMahon off your hands for a year after he had nothing left in the tank.

I'm planning to have a custom NFC NORTH mats of the GB/Lions/Vikes right at the bar entrance so I can step on them EVERYDAY....

Yup, that was fantastic. Had that play worked he would have been hailed as a genius, since it failed an idiot. Funny how that works. I too had that game DVR'd but I inadvertently deleted it just about four days ago. DOH! I almost cried, but oh well they have had several other fourth quarter comebacks to keep me on the edge of my seat.

Didn't want to start a new thread for this question. Hopefully someone can help.

I have a HTPC with regular component out and 1 HDMI out. Here's what I'm trying to do. I'm running the HPTC's hdmi to a switcher that will be out to a Plasma, and the other to the Projector. I'm able to get the audio out from the Plasma to one of the receiver ( i have 2 receivers), thus using the surround sound in that room.
Here's where I'm a little lost. I took a look at all the HD projectors on projectorpeople and all of them are listed as "no outputs", not for audio. All they have are the component/hdmi inputs.
I want to hook the speakers in the projector room to the other receiver. How can I achieve this?
From the HTPC, I can't use both audio out and HDMI out at the same time. It have to be one or the other. And remember the 1 HDMI out from the htpc is to the hdmi switcher.

Thanks,

Anyone?
Need to figure this out soon. I'm about to break the wall and run all the wires...
Can you not add a second audio out USB connection or another audio card from the HTPC?

I am also pretty sure that most TVs will not pass multi channel out that they receive from the HDMI input. They will send two channel sound from it though. You should check your TV manual and be very sure of it before you run wires based on that. You also might have to check in the TV forums to see.

You might have to end up putting the recievers at the main location and run all your speaker wire from there to the rooms to do what you want to do.

I have a question or you. Where are you getting your Kegerator and stuff? I am just about to buy one (most likely a Summit, based on my wife's research) and want to make sure I am not doing something stupid.

I have no problem running audio from the tv. The projector is the problem. There's no audio output on a projector.

You Kegerator question:

I purchased a Kenmore kegerator. Read great reviews on it and it's very well priced. I haven't hook the kegerator up yet. It look pretty solid (well, it should). Will let you know more after hooking it up.

You are correct there are NO AUDIO OUTS on a projector. The only projectors I have seen with audio outs are the business and the ones with a DVD player all in one units. You will need to get the audio to the receiver without going through the projector.

You will need a splitter for HDMI and send the signal to the other receiver then HDMI to the projector for the video.

Like this one.

This should help if I understand what you need by what you are saying.

thanks RTROSE;

That's exactly what I was thinking. But I do need to convert an HDMI to an audio component due to the fact that my receiver doesn't have HDMI inputs. I'm contemplating of getting a new one with HDMI inputs. I'm currently using the Yamaha HTR-5890 and HATE to see it retire early.

All I am saying is that due to some stupid hollywood DRM or something, most TVs will not take a signal in on HDMI and then pass 5.1 from it out their audio jacks, only 2 channel. Since you said that you want multichannel and your setup depends on teh TV passing 5.1, just make sure yours will.

I have a Yamaha HTR 5490, it is a really good reciever, so I imagine the 5890 is as well. It does suck to have to change for HDMI, but you will be surprised at the quality and features you can get for the same or less now. I replaced my 5490 with a Denon 1909 when I got Blu Ray and it is a great receiver also.

How do you figure out if your TV output is only to channel or full 5.1? My old 62" samsung DLP seem to have full surrounds when I use its audio out option.
I have a Sharp Aquos 60" LCD but haven't hook it up yet. Is there a way I can find out if it's 5.1?

I'm having a hard time deciding weather or not to get a new receiver. I love the HTR-5890 and I think it still doing an excellent job. Hate to see it retired. It's hard to justify spending the money on a new receiver that the only different is basically their HDMI options.
