That's what I'm liking about the game so far: it ca be challenging for the skilled players and still be accessible and fun enough for the casual players.

I've been waiting for this game to release and picked it up on Friday for my kids. First, the game is a hit with them. Second, the creation part is awesome. I love how they are totally into creating Mod's and tracks and they truly love it as well.

.....a must have for kids!!

So far my son and I love this game. My mod contributions have been a Col. Hannibal and an 80s style V and am working on a Blackhawks fan.

Just received the game today. Seems like tons of fun so far. I really like the way the karts drive as well.

Really enjoying it so far. I tried to make some levels in Little Big Planet, but it was too complicated for me to ever try and really figure out. This game, though...you can get as in-depth as you wish. If you want, you can just do a basic track layout, then let the computer auto-finish/auto-populate for you. Very self explanatory.
You can also sit down and place every tree, every power-up, every wall....everything.

Actually laying the track is just like driving the cart. R2 to drive forward (while laying the track), then you can control your elevation, turn left/right. Very simple. Also, tutorials ARE included if you need some help or want to get deeper in the creator.

I made a level called "Alpine Twist" that has some different types of track, a couple devastators and some corkscrew portions of track. Give 'er a download! (please)

Anyway....I'm not generally a fan of racing games. I thought the Split/Second demo was pretty blah...but MNR is just really fun. I even have a good time when I lose online races. I've done maybe 5 XP races and I won one, last place twice and came in about middle the other two. Smiled during all of them, though!

PS - The load times that everyone talks about do exist (I'm starting to get used to them...go figure), HOWEVER....the FIRST time you run the game, the load times are VERY long. They get faster after that first time through though, so don't completely freak out during your first game.

I did my first online race yesterday. I was in last place the majority of the race but ended up finishing 5th somehow. Like you, I enjoyed it the entire time.

I'm beginning to notice this as well. It still takes a while to load up a race/track, but the load times from the first day have diminished.

On another note, I can't for the life of me beat the challenge where you have to get 4000 Max Speed points. I seem to come in around 3000-3600 every time (except one time where I got that green booster item pickup). Should I just be trying to hit all of the boost ramps or is there another trick to this?

In that section where there is 4-5 boost pads in a row and you kind of weave in and out of a middle barrier, just make sure to hit all those in a row and you should get a ton of top speed points.

Okay I'll keep trying to do that. I can usually do that at least once per race, but in at least one of the other two laps I get zapped or derailed by one of the other racers. That is so frustrating

You might want to spike your Acceleration rating up a notch as well. And save enough turbo for shields, particularly in the final lap.

This game is an extreme amount of fun. I'm really enjoying the single player, the creation and the multiplayer. It's disappointing that I don't see more people playing this game online. Other than the loading time, the components are there for a long lasting, fun racing experience.
I haven't even really gotten into the creation and multiplayer yet, and I'm having a ton of fun. Can't wait to get into more of the MP aspect and download some stuff.

Anyone unlock the Model T body that is seen in one of the "did you know" loading screens? If so, do you remember what you had to do to unlock it? Thanks...

I think you have to get a 30-kill streak

I'm thinking they took some steps to clean up the matchmaking servers online. I noticed I was getting into XP series races quite a bit easier over the weekend, and they would run with 6-10 players rather then being lucky to get 4 people together. Hopefully this is a trend that can continue to improve!
Some of the mods out there are awesome. If you're a fan of chuck some guys have built some awesome nerd herders!!
Wow, this Looney Tunes mod pack is insanely cool. Nine characters, some karts, and two themed tracks:

I've seen lots of those looney toons mods in online races.

I really can't help but wonder whether this game is going to stir up issues with trademark/copyright holders?
Eh, if someone officially complains, Sony just removes the offending item. Most probably appreciate the free advertising for their brand.
LBP ran into some copyright issues at some point right? They just ended up purging a lot of user-created content I believe, as joe mentions.

Just found out that there isn't a model T body yet. It probably will be DLC in the future since it was in a loading screen.

I'm finding this game extremely addictive. This is my first racing game (kart or otherwise), so I'm not particularly good, but I'm enjoying getting better. I played for over 10 hours this weekend and actually won a few online races yesterday.

I will say, however, that it isn't particularly easy for non-gamers to play. The controls and steering and drifting take some getting used to, making it difficult for my girlfriend and her daughter to pick up and just start playing with me.
^^^ Agreed. This isn't Mario Kart as far as ease of advanced controls go. They were definitely designed for the hardcore player.
The career mode gets significantly tougher as you progress to the 4th tier. However my female friend is still able to enjoy playing some split-screen races with me, provided I turn it to "easy" mode.

Is it just me or is anyone else having problems on the desert sand type of tracks (Market Race, Sandstorm, Sinkhole, etc.)? I'm OK on the jungle sand, but for some reason in career I really struggle and have yet to get into 1st place on those I listed, though I've consulted online videos to make sure I'm taking the best path. Any tips or advice on tweaking drifting/handling/speed/acceleration settings for those tracks would be much appreciated.
Does the "sand" actually affect the kart physics? I never noticed it if so and can't think of why these maps specifically would cause you trouble.

I don't play as much anymore, but I was just making sure to do the daily "Hot Lap" and work to get into top 10% everyday. It's the best way to learn the lines on tracks and how to fly around them quickly and cleanly. Once you have the lines down it's just a matter of keeping your meter full for defense and smart weapon usage.

Yes, I try to do the Hot Lap everyday myself, and it definitely helps when I get to that track in Career. I just thought it was an odd coincidence that the tracks I get the most stuck on and can't get 1st place in are these desert sand ones. The handling is fairly loose in this game anyway, and it just seems I slip around more on these tracks, which also tend to be "bumpy" in places, excerbating the problem.

This game is awesome. My girl and I are addictive. We play everyday and she wasn't playing anything before. It does get a bit tough on the grim tour (4th tour), but its not too bad. Came in 1st place on all the tracks before it with all tokens and achievements unlocked. Some achievements can be a real b!tch.

Anyone who has a psp and is jonesing this game on the road...pick up a copy. Tons of fun. Pretty much a clone of the ps3 title but portable. With work lately I've been playing the psp version more than any other!

Yes. I generally am not a fan of racing games, but this one is great. For all of you playing this with casual gamer friends, make sure and start off with a pure race (which takes the power boosts out and just makes it a straight up race). Getting pummeled by a dozen rockets every 15 seconds will surely make them not want to play. The shield timing can be tricky.

Great news! The patch comes next week:

Quote:

Back in May, ModNation Racers came to the PlayStation 3 and ushered in the ability to create your own karts, racers and tracks. The world rejoiced, and we here at IGN loved it -- except for its lengthy load times. In fact, a lot of people hated waiting for stuff to load, the inability to invite friends to XP races, and a few other things.

ModNation Racers is fixing those problems next week.

Yes, the much-anticipated patch that United Front Games has been talking about since the release of ModNation Racers is coming next week and it's tweaking a whole bunch of stuff so that the game feels better than ever. Just what does that include?

Well...

Slashed Load Times
Yes, there are still going to be load times, but Sony is reporting that in some cases those loads will be 50 percent faster.

Casual Difficulty FTW
A lot of folks dug the gameplay in ModNation Racers, but they were getting pwned by the game's AI-controlled opponents; those computerized bastards never gave Player 1 a break! Well, this patch introduces Casual Difficulty Mode. This should give people who just want to have some fun the chance to do so without having to worry about hurling a controller after getting sideswiped in the third lap.
Our video review goes from 0 to 60 in 30 seconds.

Friends with XP Benefits
Racing in XP Races and Series is key to earning experience points and leveling-up online. However, as it stands, you can't invite your friends to XP outings. It kind of sucks the fun out of your multiplayer romp. Well, next week, that'll be a thing of the past. This patch allows you to invite your buddies to races and series, so go level grind!

Death to Hot Lap Cheaters
Apparently, this patch will fix a bug that allowed players to cut through tracks and post ridiculous times in the online Hot Lap section. Only a few more days to steal the spotlight, kids!

The Ultimate Collector
Player cards -- the profile showing what you've whipped up -- will now display all of you creations and not just some of them.

Get Online Faster and Stay There
United Front Games is also fixing MNR so that you'll be able to jump into online races faster than ever. The developers say that this has been done by removing "the online game room from the ModSpot." On top of that, the server's been upgraded to help get rid of those pesky disconnects people were having to deal with. We'll see how that works next week.

Attain the Unattainable (Challenges)
United Front Games has listened to all of your ranting and raving and honed in on three challenges that it agrees are just too damn tough. When you download the patch, expect different completion conditions on the Devastator takedown on Wild Run, the Devastator takedown on Modobahn and the "sideswipe three opponents on the cliff side" task on Fracture.

Free Stuff
The Tin Bucket item will be unlocked for everyone! Hooray!
