Panasonic S1 VS Samsung B850

Hello all,

First I would like to say that I'm a complete beginner when it comes to HDTV's. Someone has pointed me to this website, where I was told I can learn more about them here.

I'm looking to buy a 58inch plasma HDTV. I'm stuck between these two TV. They both have good reviews, but it's really hard for me to choose. Especially for me who does not know what to look for in a HDTV. Hopefully someone here can explain to me which one is an overall better HDTV.

Panasonic 58inch S1

or

Samsung PN58B850T2F

Thanks,
Michael

Both are fine TV's, but which one you wind up getting is dependent on your situation as there are differences. Each of those TV's has a specific owner's thread where you can ask any question about that particular set and you'll likely find the answer. Also, do a forum search with keywords "B850" and "S1" and you'll probably find some comparison threads between the two.

If you're willing to do the research, all the answers to your questions have probably been posted already.

You should also consider the 58" Panny V10. There are already numerous threads dedicated to all these displays, as well as comparison threads, so please use the search function.

Thanks for all your fast replies, I really do appreciate the help. +REP. Seems like i'll go with the panasonic since its cheaper.

Erm, I was planning on getting the S1, now after reading seems like the panasonic has cast a light green light on everything. Which makes it look not that great. Picking out a HDTV is so hard.

Someone put me out of my misery....... Hmm, reading around this website i'm starting to think I should get the G10 over the Panasonic S1 and samsung B850.
I just wonder if they offer it at bestbuy, or otherwise I would go with the Panasonic S1.

I looked at both the S1 and the G10 at Sears with my own BluRay discs and couldn't see enough value in the G10 to spend the extra money.

Go to the store with a disc or two and see for yourself. Both the S1 and G10 are fine plasmas, imo.

Thanks for your input, now comparing the B850 vs the S1 which one would you prefer?

Thanks in advance.

I did look at one Samsung plasma at the store, mostly because that is all they had. I don't know the model, but it was a 50" and I wasn't interested. It was a tad brighter than the Panny in the store setting, otherwise it was not quite as good overall as the Panny. All that is very subjective on my part.

Generally I'm not enamored of Samsung products, nor their after sale support. Couple that with the buzzing I keep reading about and it really takes the Samsung plasma off my radar screen.

Had I been interested in LCD, then Samsung would have gotten a more in depth look and research.

if you're even thinking about getting a calibration, get the g10. but the s1 will suffice. the samsung is a great tv too. but it has more/other issues than the green you're worried about.

The G10 does not come in a 58" size, so if that's the size you want, it's back to your initial choices (or the V10).

Large Sears stores display 3 Samsung 50" Plasmas--the 720p 450 series, the 1080p 550, and the ultra-slim 1080p 850. The 850 should be on an end-cap with a Samsung BD Home Theater system as part of a promotion for a special line of concert BDs. I've seen the one in the Sears where I work and also on display at BB running U-571 on Blu Ray. The 850 Samsung is the one tv all of my co-workers lust after strictly from the standpoint of picture quality and although I'm not a Samsung fanboy by any means I must agree with them.

That being said, I trust Panasonic reliability more if I were purchasing the set for myself. I should note that we've sold a lot of Samsung plasmas and not one has been returned for buzzing--this is strictly anecdotal but nevertheless worth mentionning.

I think I read that the S14 also doesn't have the new NeoPDP screen.

i have the 54s1, and it does not appear to have the green tint that some people have mentioned.
