LG CF181D, New SXRD-projector from LG - Page 40

Just got the dreaded power failure after only 75 hrs. This sucks. It stays on for 30 seconds and then just shuts down. No way to fix it but to send it in I guess. Funny because I just installed a new firehawk screen five minutes before this failure. Why do you hate me projector gods!!!

I thought you owned a AR100U? Are you sure you don't have AC power issues in your home that lead to premature projector problems?

Yeah, I actually decided that I wanted to swap out the ar100 for this LG based on a couple factors, mainly the fact that I just really like the look of LCoS. I have been using an SXRD rptv for the last 6 years and I got used to the crazy pixel density so with the ar100u at 133" from 13' it just wasn't a smooth enough picture for me. I was really happy with the LG up until now. The PQ is amazing and the brightness is more than enough for my room.

I'm not sure about AC power issues in my home but I guess I'll have to consider that. Why would none of my other electronics be affected? I've never had a problem. And this doesn't appear to be a bulb issue at all. The bulb comes on fine and then it just kicks off after 30s-1 minute. It seems like there could be so many different factors at pay here that I couldn't begin to explain why this is happening. Any advice would be appreciated!

Ok, so right after I submitted my last post I turned on my LG and now it's been working for about 5 minutes without problem. What the F is going on here??

The shut down problem is now officially a chronic problem. I have no idea why it worked once randomly this morning for a half hour. So strange. I'm working with projector people to get a replacement from LG a few days outside their Doa replacement window. Projector people are awesome and hopefully they can make the replacement happen.

I am getting a new unit from lg as per their Doa policy which is awesome. How long can the new one last??

LG was amazing. They sent me a new unit under their DOA policy overnight about 48 hours after I filed the complaint with Projector People. I'm blown away by their customer support and my new unit is running like a top. I have no idea what the cause of the problem was but it seemed to be similar to what others were complaining about. I also got a new firehawk screen and now the picture is even better! I can't believe the contrast and now blacks look even better! All the rumors about LG customer service being terrible were not seen by me at all!

If it comes with warranty i think it would be a good buy, because any issue it had has been repaired/updated. They sell new for $1500.

The local Fry's had them on sale at $1100 or $1200 last week. Man, that is depressing considering what it cost new!

I ordered lg cf181d today for my 165 inch diagonal screen. Can someone with this projector tell me how well does this projector play action movies, dark movies [Harry Potter], Pirates of Carribean, Lord of the rings? I am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping this can put light into my screen. Is anyone running this projector on screen size 165 inch? Any feedback/review?

My buddy bought one, haven't seen it yet but from his impression, its pretty amazing. He has his whole wall set up, so definitely 150 for sure.

I've had this PJ for nearly 3 months now. Very nice colour and brightness. Maybe a little soft in sharpness, compared to a good DLP. Has some colour banding issues on some content. Shadow detail is great. Black level is its Achilles heel. If you enjoy sci-fi movies, dark scenes, you'll definitely be wanting more. Not sure if a ND filter will improve this. I'm going to be upgrading to a Benq W7000 in the next day or so because I want increased sharpness, colour saturation (DLP "pop and wow" factor), plus 3D. I think black levels are better on the Benq as well, but we'll see.

I am using a Stewart firehawk 120" screen and i run it on low lamp mode almost exclusively. So you should have no problem with 165". I would want to know what kind of screen you are using or if you're just shooting onto a wall. Honestly, this projector has good black levels, unless you're used to a black level king like a JVC or Epson UB series. Even Art from Projector reviews said he would buy one if he was limited to a lower budget than his JVC's, and he's a black level snob. SO, in my opinion the benefits of high brightness and beautiful LCOS picture far outweigh the slight black level deficiency. And by the way, dynamic contrast is just about as good as any projector out there.

Jimbo85281 - I will be hitting the projector against Da Lite High Gain screen [believe it is max 2.4 gain], hoping I will get at least 1.0 gain assuming worst viewing angle.

Tweaking - that is not real good news for me, I am not picky like professional people so maybe black may look ok to me hope I can stick with it and use it.

That will be PLENTY of brightness! I would say that even a 1.3-1.5 gain screen would be bright enough with this projector at that size in a somewhat light controlled environment. Trust me, you'll love this LG.

Does anyone know if LG has released a firmware update for this projector recently?

I would suggest that the size screen you are considering is optimal for taking advantage of this projectors strengths. I have owned one for almost two years, its hitting a painted wall with a screen size of over 200 inches.No, problems for me, just a great projector for all but the darkest movies,its super with general television and NFL football.

Its bright, colorful and dynamic with decent to good black levels.I would be surprised if you arent blown away witj a 165 inch screen.For the money and impact ,its killer. Enjoy.

We've had our LG CF181D (great name, huh?) for 2.5 weeks, It is blowing us away every time we turn it on. Very bright, good color (with some minor tweaks) and blacks are OK. Very quiet, too.

We are still seeing the "soap opera effect" that comes from the TrueMotion feature but my wife seems to like it and I'm learning to. Coming from DLPs for nearly 10 years, I am very pleased with the image it throws on our DaLite gray screen.

In summary, LG has a great PJ here and we are enjoying it, a lot.

btokars - thanks for the feedback, eagerly waiting for my cf181 - I keep wondering I went with free ground shipping instead of 2-3 day express shipping.

chris young - nice sized image, you really followed the words - go big or go home. This is one thing I do not understand how can people with projectors settle for small image sizes in order of 92 - 100 inches. projector should mean go big and immersive.

Sometimes the physical space limits what you can do. We have a 96-inch screen and that is as big as we can have unless we move to a new house. So we just live with the limitation.


As for ground FedEx shipping...yea, it's painful to have to wait once you decided to buy and placed the order. During the waiting time I just kept reminding myself that I am a grown-up and I can be patient. Of course that doesn't really help. The really painful time is when you see it is on the truck and for delivery but for some reason, today the truck is running much later than usual!
