Well I'm PO'd. Leastwise a bit.
I just finished installing a Family Room HT system. 135" diagonal DIY Painted Screen. I reveled at the results. The Owner was ecstatic! A Contractor came in to see...and he sat down for 1 hour and would not get up!
Oh yeah....We were watching 5th Element (I've already seen Avatar on BD so many time I'm thinking about growing my Pony Tail back...) So OK...I dropped Avatar in...more gasps. (My scalp started itching...) Took some screenies. Turned lights on and watched. Turned TOO many lights on and watched. Basically...it was all good to some degree and stupendous when viewing was optimal.
So what was not too like? Well...I turn off the PJ (...so people would leave, don'tcha know...) and got some sleep (...been up all night working, staying at the location these last 4 days...). Next AM (yesterday) the Owner wants to bring his Kids by to watch something (...while I work...
) OK...I also have "Alice" on BD. Cool. I pop it into the LG DVD, turn on the LG PJ, PJ starts to come on................and goes "Phffffft.......
I've heard that before! Crap! Warning lights are a'flashin'!
6 hours on the Bulb and it goes out.
Now don't get me wrong....I love this Pj. It's just that in 8 years and several hundred installs I've NEVER....EVER had that happen. And of course it HAS to happen when I'm at a location I had to drive 400 miles to get to. And it absolutely would happen when the Owner is bringing by his Kid after a huge build-up. And lastly, Murphy's Law states that it MUST happen when I want want the Owner to write me a sizable check so I get myself "Invisible".
So back I will go...in about a week. (...The PJ is 13' off the Floor...and the Owner is a "no Hands-On" kinda fellow...)
So here we go....lets see how fast and how far Projector People will go to resolve this issue. This make #no.5 of the LGs I've installed in a month.
Gotta find some joy in all this, so "Ta Da"......here are some MississippiMan screenies, in the Dark and in enough Indirect and Ambient lighting to do Brain Surgery by.
On my Brain....of course.
Yeah.....when it's working (..the PJ, not my Brain...) it does a great job, especially on a well matched screen, one that can augment the LG's Black levels while retailing all the detail the lumens provide.
The screen in this case? A 135" diagonal "Rolled onto Drywall" Silver Fire/Black Widow*....a one-of-a-kind of there ever was one.
*BW w/Pearl/Poly/SF 1.0 tint added
First off, I had to put Trim on the Big 'ol thing.
Then, since the LG doesn't have a "PJ Specific" Mounting plate available from Chief or Pearless, I "adapted" a Chief Plate intended for a Panasonic...or JVC...I can't seem to remember, but it was Flat, stout enough to handle the LG's weight, and accepted A Six Point RPA Mount. That is important to me because I always pass my Video-Electrical cords down the 1.5" Prop Pipe. (...see the nice 1.5" center Hole?)
Now below are examples of why I hold this PJ so "near and dear"...it's a uber Bright 1080p SXRD unit with 30K:1 CR that readily works well with reflective Gray surfaces of over 1.0 gain. Besides helping the PJ's projected contrast look better "off the screen", combined with the right screen there is also the the advantages it provides as far as being an exceptional ambient light performer. And some of these shots have a ridiculous amount of Ambient light present...certainly enough to have some deleterious effect on the screen's image. But not nearly as much as one would expect given the circumstances.
Three sets of 3 images, each successive image in a group going from one degree of lighting to another.
The Desert Boy
Avatar: Making a Video Log;
Everybody's favorite Blue Monkey Cat;
And lastly, a slew of "Dark Room" shots of something with lots pf Color and contrast. ("...you know, that
You don't suppose my stopping / starting the PJ a zillion times had anything to do with the Bulb going out......does ya?
