Optoma HD66 - First 3D home theatre/gaming projector - Page 42

Thinking about buying the HD66, however I have a few questions. First off I don't care about the 3D function. I would have chose the HD65(since I don't care about 3D), but I have read that the HD66's lamp is more efficient, also the more lumens is a plus, as well as the contrast ratio. Will I have any problems plugging my HD TV tuner, blue ray player with 3 foot HDMI cables into a HDMI switch, and running one 25 foot cable with a HDMI repeater with a 3 foot cable to the projector? I will make sure the Blue Ray player only outputs 720p/60, and also I will set the projector the 720/60, and my audio will be through RCA cables to my stereo. So it shouldn't have a problem passing a 720/60 signal correct? Only thing im worried about is syncing, and judders, or artifacts in the picture. If anyone here has any suggestions for a trouble free setup, let me know.

No assurances can be had with HDMI involved, sorry. But that has nothing to do with the chosen display.

I use HDMI with my HD 66, although always for 3d. It should work fine for you at 720p 60. Rainbows are evident, but no jutters, artifacts, or syncing problems. I do think you could find a better, cheaper projector if what you want is 2D. 1080p, for starters...

do u guys see any ghosting /crosstalk when u watch 3d movies? also when u watch 2d movies, do u see any rainbow on the screen? i am going to buy 50inches hdmi cable. i am wondering do u get any signal loss when the hdmi cable is that long?

I have been doing tons of projector research, I can't hardly find anything that compares to the Optoma HD66 soecs. The thing I like the most is the lamps are cheaper to replace then other models, also the contrast ratio is higher then other projectors I've looked at. If anyone has any suggestions, please do let me know. I could spend a bit more and go for the HD20 since it is just 2D, however I keep reading about reliability issues with it. Maybe im better off with a refurbished model of that one.

how is the picture on 2d and 3d? good or bad?

anybody ever see a moving horizontal line moving from bottom to top? I just hooked up the projector and noticed it after about 1/2 hour. I will check it again tomorrow when its cool. Hope its not a defective projector right off the get go!

Does anyone here use this projector with a Harmony remote ? Does anyone know discrete codes for Sync Invert & setting 3D mode to SBS ?

You can get high speed 25' cables from Monoprice and others cheap. You won't need a repeater - esp for non-3D 720p. Get a 22awg cable for peace of mind.

Never any crosstalk, but yes, people see rainbows with the HD66 if they see rainbows.

The HD66 does not have a menu setting for SBS. The projector only accepts frame sequential 720p, so you convert your source from SBS to frame sequential either in your computer or external converter like the 3dxl. I don't know the sync invert code but it would be nice to have it programmed to one button press.

simple question: is excessive light around image normal? My image in 16:9 mode does not fill the lighted area. I have tried many different settings to fill the area as the excess light is kind of annoying. Is there a good way to mask the light as to minimize the effect?

Nope, not normal. I have never had that happen with mine.

Well I received my HD66 yesterday afternoon. Hooked everything up, and calibrated it using some of the settings that I found on this forum. It is absolutely amazing! I was nervous at first hoping I didn't waste my money...well my money was well spent on this things. Picture looks amazing on Dish Network HD broadcast, and on blueray. Anyone thinking about buying this projector- DO IT!

Any recommendations on a home theater setup for the HD66? I will be using the PS3 and PC mostly and was thinking of a soundbar (Sony HT-CT150) to avoid clutter. Looking for something around $300.

Is their any rainbow effect with hd66 in 3D mode?

Most of the 3D games ive played are 1280x720....I would think that it would look the same on the hd66 as it does on my Samsungs,given that the 3D games downrez to 720p anyways right?

I have not tried my HD66 with 3D yet...but I have never seen a rainbow with mine in 2D, even iwth lack and white scenes. Know one else in my family else has either. I was worried at first I might see them lol. But, everyone is different, just because I don't see them doesn't mean that you won't either.

I don't have the 3d Xl but I recently purchased the monoprice 3D Creator ($100.00) from monoprice.com and a pair of Optoma ZD101 DLP link shutter glasses from Amazon.com. This little box is amazing. It turns bluray 1080P 2D movies into crystal clear, full colour 3D from my Optoma HD 66 projector with a 120 inch screen. I also have an HD70 and picked up an HD66 recently on sale as I wanted a brighter picture and was interested in 3D. The 3D movie quality actually seems to be better than the 2D quality but a little darker. It also works great on 2d DVD movies from my Oppo DVD player and on digital HD 720P TV too. Absolutley no ghosting and perfect sync.

I am watching many of my 2D bluray movies over again in 3D, many seem like totally different movies, King Kong by Peter Jackson is amazing, Independence Day, the new bluray versions of the Jurrasic Park trilogy, Sanctum, The Hunt for Red October, Transformers 3, Avatar, I-Robot, are all amazing in 2d to 3D bluray by the Monoprice 3D Creator. The other interesting thing is that while I sometimes see rainbows with my Optoma HD66, when running in 3D I never see them, even if I try.

Anybody with a 3D DLP projector and espescially the Optoma HD 66 should do themselves a big favour and get 1080P 3D ( better picture than 720P native on HD66) for $100.00 + glasses, you won't be disappointed. If you just use the Optoma 3D XL you will need to also purchase a 3D bluray player and will be limited to watching the limited selection of 3D blueray movies available. With the monoprice 3D creator you turn your total 2D blueray and DVD collection into 3D + watch sports in 3D HD. It migh sound like I am almost posting a commercial for this monoprice unit but I rarely have gotten so much enjoyment out of an electronics purchase for just $100.00 - could have easily been 5 to 10X the cost.

I am having problems replacing a faulty 50ft hdmi 1.3B cable from my pioneer 1120 to my optpma hd66. Replacement HIGH SPEED cable gives me snow or sparkles in the backround.By passing 1120, components hooked directly work fine. 2nd replacement 1.4 cable gave no sound or pics. PLugged orig. faulty cable back in , and NO SNOW, but faulty in another area as pic is all distorted. the replacements are high speed and high speed +ethernet. THis is driving me crazy! could this be some king of ground issue? PLEASE HELP

Apologies for this noob question, but I've spent a couple hours googling and lurking and can't seem to figure this out:

I have a home theater/gaming PC with PowerDVD 11 and an HD66 projector. My graphics card is an Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX+. I'd like to get 3D Bluray capability for an audience of 4 people for the smallest possible cost.

Would an Nvidia 3D Vision emitter and 4 pairs of Nvidia glasses do the job? Is there a cheaper way?

Guys, I've had this pj for a while now it's AWESOME - sharpest, clearest, best picture I've ever gotten from a home pj. Runs off my HTPC and I used the nvidia 3D vision and it's simply killer! Wondering if anyone has ever sent their HD66 in for repairs and how long it takes.
About 2 weeks ago I noticed 4 white dots on my screen, when looking closer I assumed they are dead pixels as they are individual dots. 2 days later I had 11 dots some in a cluster and others spread out. I called Costco Concierge and they set me up with an RMA for Optoma and I am mailing it out tomorrow. By the time I sent it I have many more dots around the screen.

Is this fixable? or are they going to try and give me a refurb? Costco no longer sells the hd66 so hopefully I can get another one but not to sure about a refurb

Does this sound like dead pixels? Would they continue to multiply?

This is exactly what just happened to mine. The dead pixels will continue to spread and grow in number. Sent mine in just before Christmas (Optoma says they received it on the 29th - but that's probably when they got back after the Holiday). The online status was just updated today and it says they shipped it out today after replacing a defective part. So, overall not a bad turn around. Communicating with them on the status by email I never received a response.

My HD66 I got when my HD70 died (after the warranty in that case). I think the HD70 picture was more pleasing but the HD66 was a lot brighter. I haven't used the 3d, nor am I likely.

Just got my HD66.. I tried to get the sound output for my PS3 after the PS3 was hooked to HD66.. and the sound output from my PS3 is hooked to my Logitech Z906 to a Digital optical input. I could only get sound from Projector and not from Z906.

Also for some reason when I used a regular HDMI cable connected to HD66 no output came out of PS3 from projector but when I used HDMI 1.4 the output came fine..

Appreciate the inputs about fixing to get the sound from z906.. I hope I do not have to get a receiver to get the sound.

Also I have seen many posts talking about projector settings to get good picture.. Can someone post a good calibration setting configuration which gets amazing colors from HD66..

I got my HH66 as a replacement when my HD70 broke. The odd thing is that it looks "softer" than my old HD70 and I'm seeing rainbow like CRAZY and I never did with my HD70.

I've seen somewhere that after 50 hours of use or so rainbows calm down a bit, is that true?

If not, would I be better served spending the extra $300 and moving up to the HD20 even if I only view 720p stuff?

Start with turning the lamp down to standard mode, turn "brilliant color" down to 2, set brightness as 38, contrast at 65, set the degamma to video mode, sharp set to 15, red gain -15. Red bias -2, green -2, blue -2, yellow -2. This gives me the best picture, I have deep blacks, picture is super sharp. If it was any sharper it would look artificial and unnatural. Light control is key. I would describe the PQ to be very film like, very natural. looks better then my dads Panasonic 50 inch plasma.
