Carrie Underwood's All-Star Holiday Special on FoxHD

Anybody watch it? My first question, when they filmed it did they know it was a holiday show? It certainly did not look like one when Carrie opened the show in a painted on black leather outfit. Hey don't get me wrong, she has a hot body and all, but this was advertised and labeled as a holiday special. It was only the last 10 minutes of a 2 hour show where we heard some holiday music. Considering it came at the end I am wondering if they originally filmed this as a Carrie Underwood special and then relabeled it and tacked on a couple of holiday songs. She has an incredible voice, if she had done some more of the standards it could have worked out better.

I was very disappointed with this show last night as I had high hopes it would be christmas/holiday music but turned out to be the exact opposite.

I watched until Davis Cook tried to sing, then I turned it off!

I tuned past it -- saw that it was widescreen SD -- and kept moving ...

Not me, I'm guessing they used the same equipment they use for SYTYCD, wide screen SD
Not a bad showing, just not great.

I live in NJ, the feed comes from NY for me, it was HD.

It was HD in Atlanta as well.

Not only do I hate her, but I hate the idiot program scheduler that thought she was more important than House.

Ditto. Clearly not an HD broadcast, but like most of Fox's upconverted widescreen component SD, still halfway decent PQ. Apparently fooled more than a couple here .

Yes don't be fooled because it's broadcast in HD and on a HD channel, the source was still SD. Note it still looks much better than watching the same program on a SD channel but that has more to due with bandwidth and the superior upconversion process. Closeups looked quite good but when the camera was panned out the definition was lost in the fine detail.
I used to think FOX just had poor HD until I realized much of the HD I watched on FOX was upconverted SD, FOX live sports are real HD and really quite good.
Did anyone else notice the stage/auditorium looked very similar to So You Think You Can Dance? They were both from the same production company so I guess it would make sense. It's also been verified SYTYCD is upconverted SD.

I'm not really into her music, either, Xmas or not - but if it had been in HD, I would've at least watched the part where she was in the painted-on, black leather outfit.

I will say that, if forced, I'd much rather watch her singing Xmas songs than Christina Aguilera completely wrecking them. At least Underwood can sing.

I literally had to leave Kmart last week, because they were playing non-stop, "modern" versions of Christmas songs, except that it sounded more like they were constipated and in pain than actually singing.

And sadly, that's why they continue to go "on the cheap" and do a lot of widescreen SD -- if some people who visit an enthusiast's forum like this don't see the difference, I suspect the vast majority of the viewing public believe it is HD as well ...

SD widescreen via WZDX-54 Huntsville AL over the air.

Interesting, didn't know this. Learn something new everyday!! How is the easy way to truly tell if the program is in HD as opposed to SD that has been upconverted?

Just by looking at it. When the background looks really soft, it's usually widescreen SD (on Fox).

I watched it, and the show was blah. Carrie has a good voice, but I actually thought David Cook sounded better.

And while this may have been a production error, there were a few times it looked like Carrie was lip-syncing.

Then why doesnt every network do WideSD ?

Because Fox affiliates already have the equipment to handle it. But other network affiliates differ in how they handle widescreen content.

Noticed the same thing.... where's the beef!.... er... holiday music?
She started off talking about her run on AI of all things
I guess it's just not PC to do a Christmas special any more. My 7th graders "winter concert" didn't have any holiday set decorations or even one Christmas song in it last week, and my 8th graders "winter concert" last night had just one Christmas song- some international type of song I've never heard before, and didn't recognize as a Christmas song. But then I'm not really surprised- cause for two years the school administration stopped the always popular school Halloween parade because it "wasn't appropriate and against school policy for the students to wear masks in school" but finally brought it back this year after a big uproar by the parents- but now it's called of all things.... "The Black and Orange parade" and must be held after school hours and hosted by the PTA without any "official school involvement"

But wouldnt it still be cheaper to bring in/use that equipment rather then do HD ?

It depends on who's running things. The others have made the decision that they don't want to do this.

This is only partly true. All of the networks could do widescreen SD if they want to -- on the affiliate end there's nothing to do -- the SD video is upconverted at the network to 720p or 1080i, depending on their particular standard. As far as the affiliate is concerned it's "HD."

Isn't Halloween officially a secular celebration nowadays? What the heck is up with that?

Like can be said about many things today.... it was much simpler when I was a kid (in the 60's and 70's)- Halloween was all about getting bags full of candy- that's it!

For anyone who missed this the first time around Fox seems to be repeating it already Guess they're trying to fill the space left by SYTYCD. It will be re airing 7-9pm Central 12/22. It's a SD upconvert for those wondering.
